1 I composed the first discourse, O Theophilus, concerning all things which Jesus began both to do and to teach,
2 until that day in which, having by the Holy Spirit charged the apostles whom he had chosen, he was taken up;
3 to whom also he presented himself living, after he had suffered, with many proofs; being seen by them during forty days, and speaking of the things which concern the kingdom of God;
4 and, being assembled with {them}, commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to await the promise of the Father, which {said he} ye have heard of me.
5 For John indeed baptised with water, but *ye* shall be baptised with the Holy Spirit after now not many days.
6 They therefore, being come together, asked him saying, Lord, is it at this time that thou restorest the kingdom to Israel?
7 And he said to them, It is not yours to know times or seasons, which the Father has placed in his own authority;
8 but ye will receive power, the Holy Spirit having come upon you, and ye shall be my witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.
9 And having said these things he was taken up, they beholding {him}, and a cloud received him out of their sight.
10 And as they were gazing into heaven, as he was going, behold, also two men stood by them in white clothing,
11 who also said, Men of Galilee, why do ye stand looking into heaven? This Jesus who has been taken up from you into heaven, shall thus come in the manner in which ye have beheld him going into heaven.
12 Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called {the mount} of Olives, which is near Jerusalem, a sabbath-day's journey off.
13 And when they were come into {the city}, they went up to the upper chamber, where were staying both Peter, and John, and James, and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James {son} of Alphaeus, and Simon the zealot, and Jude {the brother} of James.
14 These gave themselves all with one accord to continual prayer, with {several} women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.
15 And in those days Peter, standing up in the midst of the brethren, said, (the crowd of names {who were} together {was} about a hundred and twenty,)
16 Brethren, it was necessary that the scripture should have been fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke before, by the mouth of David, concerning Judas, who became guide to those who took Jesus;
17 for he was numbered amongst us, and had received a part in this service.
18 (This {man} then indeed got a field with {the} reward of iniquity, and, having fallen down headlong, burst in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out.
19 And it was known to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that that field was called in their own dialect Aceldama; that is, field of blood.)
20 For it is written in {the} book of Psalms, Let his homestead become desolate, and let there be no dweller in it; and, Let another take his overseership.
21 It is necessary therefore, that of the men who have assembled with us all {the} time in which the Lord Jesus came in and went out among us,
22 beginning from the baptism of John until the day in which he was taken up from us, one of these should be a witness with us of his resurrection.
23 And they appointed two, Joseph, who was called Barsabas, who had been surnamed Justus, and Matthias.
24 And they prayed, and said, Thou Lord, knower of the hearts of all, shew which one of these two thou hast chosen,
25 to receive the lot of this service and apostleship, from which Judas transgressing fell to go to his own place.
26 And they gave lots on them, and the lot fell on Matthias, and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.
1 Nous avons rempli le premier traité, Théophile! de toutes les choses que Jésus a faites et enseignées;
2 Jusqu'au jour qu'il fut élevé [au ciel] ; après avoir donné par le Saint-Esprit ses ordres aux Apôtres qu'il avait élus.
3 A qui aussi, après avoir souffert, il se présenta soi-même vivant, avec plusieurs preuves assurées, étant vu par eux durant quarante jours, et leur parlant des choses qui regardent le Royaume de Dieu.
4 Et les ayant assemblés, il leur commanda de ne partir point de Jérusalem, mais [d'y] attendre [l'effet de] la promesse du Père, laquelle, [dit-il], vous avez ouïe de moi.
5 Car Jean a baptisé d'eau, mais vous serez baptisés du Saint-Esprit, dans peu de jours.
6 Eux donc étant assemblés l'interrogèrent, disant : Seigneur, sera-ce en ce temps-ci que tu rétabliras le Royaume d'Israël?
7 Mais il leur dit : ce n'est point à vous de connaître les temps ou les moments qui ne dépendent que de mon Père.
8 Mais vous recevrez la vertu du Saint-Esprit qui viendra sur vous; et vous me serez témoins tant à Jérusalem qu'en toute la Judée, et dans la Samarie, et jusqu'au bout de la terre.
9 Et quand il eut dit ces choses, il fut élevé [au ciel], eux le regardant, et une nuée le soutenant l'emporta de devant leurs yeux.
10 Et comme ils avaient les yeux arrêtés vers le ciel, à mesure qu'il s'en allait, voici, deux hommes en vêtements blancs se présentèrent devant eux;
11 Qui leur dirent : hommes Galiléens, pourquoi vous arrêtez-vous à regarder au ciel? Ce Jésus qui a été élevé d'avec vous au ciel en descendra de la même manière que vous l'avez contemplé montant au ciel.
12 Alors ils s'en retournèrent à Jérusalem de la montagne appelée [la montagne] des oliviers, qui est près de Jérusalem le chemin d'un Sabbat.
13 Et quand ils furent entrés [dans la ville], ils montèrent en une chambre haute; où demeuraient Pierre et Jacques, Jean et André, Philippe et Thomas, Barthélemy et Matthieu, Jacques [fils] d'Alphée, et Simon Zélotes, et Jude frère de Jacques.
14 Tous ceux-ci persévéraient unanimement en prières et en oraisons avec les femmes, et avec Marie mère de Jésus, et avec ses Frères.
15 Et en ces jours-là Pierre se leva au milieu des Disciples, qui étaient là assemblés au nombre d'environ six-vingts personnes, et il leur dit :
16 Hommes frères! il fallait que fût accompli ce qui a été écrit, [et] que le Saint-Esprit a prédit par la bouche de David touchant Judas, qui a été le guide de ceux qui ont pris Jésus.
17 Car il était de notre corps, et il avait reçu sa part de ce ministère.
18 Mais s'étant acquis un champ avec le salaire injuste qui lui avait été donné, et s'étant précipité, son corps s'est crevé par le milieu, et toutes ses entrailles ont été répandues.
19 Ce qui a été connu de tous les habitants de Jérusalem; tellement que ce champ-là a été appelé en leur propre Langue, Haceldama, c'est-à-dire, le champ du sang.
20 Car il est écrit au Livre des Psaumes : que sa demeure soit déserte, et qu'il n'y ait personne qui y habite. Et, qu'un autre prenne son emploi.
21 Il faut donc que d'entre ces hommes qui se sont assemblés avec nous pendant tout le temps que le Seigneur Jésus a vécu entre nous,
22 En commençant depuis le Baptême de Jean, jusqu'au jour qu'il a été enlevé d'avec nous, quelqu'un d'entre eux soit témoin avec nous de sa résurrection.
23 Et ils en présentèrent deux, [savoir] Joseph, appelé Barsabas, qui était surnommé Juste ; et Matthias.
24 Et en priant ils dirent : toi, Seigneur, qui connais les cœurs de tous, montre lequel de ces deux tu as élu;
25 Afin qu'il prenne [sa] part de ce ministère et de cet Apostolat, que Judas a abandonné, pour s'en aller en son lieu.
26 Puis ils les tirèrent au sort; et le sort tomba sur Matthias, qui d'une commune voix fut mis au rang des onze Apôtres.
