1 And Paul, fixing his eyes on the council, said, Brethren, I have walked in all good conscience with God unto this day.
2 But the high priest Ananias ordered those standing by him to smite his mouth.
3 Then Paul said to him, God will smite thee, whited wall. And *thou*, dost thou sit judging me according to the law, and breaking the law commandest me to be smitten?
4 And those that stood by said, Dost thou rail against the high priest of God?
5 And Paul said, I was not conscious, brethren, that he was high priest; for it is written, Thou shalt not speak evilly of the ruler of thy people.
6 But Paul, knowing that the one part {of them} were of the Sadducees and the other of the Pharisees, cried out in the council, Brethren, *I* am a Pharisee, son of Pharisees: *I* am judged concerning the hope and resurrection of {the} dead.
7 And when he had spoken this, there was a tumult of the Pharisees and the Sadducees, and the multitude was divided.
8 For Sadducees say there is no resurrection, nor angel, nor spirit; but Pharisees confess both of them.
9 And there was a great clamour, and the scribes of the Pharisees' part rising up contended, saying, We find nothing evil in this man; and if a spirit has spoken to him, or an angel...
10 And a great tumult having arisen, the chiliarch, fearing lest Paul should have been torn in pieces by them, commanded the troop to come down and take him by force from the midst of them, and to bring {him} into the fortress.
11 But the following night the Lord stood by him, and said, Be of good courage; for as thou hast testified the things concerning me at Jerusalem, so thou must bear witness at Rome also.
12 And when it was day, the Jews, having banded together, put themselves under a curse, saying that they would neither eat nor drink till they should kill Paul.
13 And they were more than forty who had joined together in this oath;
14 and they went to the chief priests and elders, and said, We have cursed ourselves with a curse to taste nothing until we kill Paul.
15 Now therefore do ye with the council make a representation to the chiliarch so that he may bring him down to you, as about to determine more precisely what concerns him, and we, before he draws near, are ready to kill him.
16 But Paul's sister's son, having heard of the lying in wait, came and entered into the fortress and reported {it} to Paul.
17 And Paul, having called one of the centurions, said, Take this youth to the chiliarch, for he has something to report to him.
18 He therefore, having taken him with {him}, led him to the chiliarch, and says, The prisoner Paul called me to {him} and asked me to lead this youth to thee, who has something to say to thee.
19 And the chiliarch having taken him by the hand, and having gone apart in private, inquired, What is it that thou hast to report to me?
20 And he said, The Jews have agreed together to make a request to thee, that thou mayest bring Paul down to-morrow into the council, as about to inquire something more precise concerning him.
21 Do not thou then be persuaded by them, for there lie in wait for him of them more than forty men, who have put themselves under a curse neither to eat nor drink till they kill him; and now they are ready waiting the promise from thee.
22 The chiliarch then dismissed the youth, commanding {him}, Utter to no one that thou hast represented these things to me.
23 And having called to {him} certain two of the centurions, he said, Prepare two hundred soldiers that they may go as far as Caesarea, and seventy horsemen, and two hundred light-armed footmen, for the third hour of the night.
24 And {he ordered them} to provide beasts, that they might set Paul on them and carry {him} safe through to Felix the governor,
25 having written a letter, couched in this form:
26 Claudius Lysias to the most excellent governor Felix, greeting.
27 This man, having been taken by the Jews, and being about to be killed by them, I came up with the military and took out {of their hands}, having learned that he was a Roman.
28 And desiring to know the charge on which they accused him, I brought him down to their council;
29 whom I found to be accused of questions of their law, but to have no charge laid against him {making him} worthy of death or of bonds.
30 But having received information of a plot about to be put in execution against the man {by the Jews}, I have immediately sent him to thee, commanding also his accusers to say before thee the things that are against him. {Farewell.}
31 The soldiers therefore, according to what was ordered them, took Paul and brought him by night to Antipatris,
32 and on the morrow, having left the horsemen to go with him, returned to the fortress.
33 And these, having entered into Caesarea, and given up the letter to the governor, presented Paul also to him.
34 And having read {it}, and asked of what eparchy he was, and learned that {he was} of Cilicia,
35 he said, I will hear thee fully when thine accusers also are arrived. And he commanded him to be kept in Herod's praetorium.
1 Et Paul regardant fixement le Conseil, dit : hommes frères! je me suis conduit en toute bonne conscience devant Dieu jusqu'à ce jour.
2 Sur quoi le souverain Sacrificateur Ananias commanda à ceux qui étaient près de lui, de le frapper sur le visage.
3 Alors Paul lui dit : Dieu te frappera, paroi blanchie ; puisque étant assis pour me juger selon la Loi, tu commandes, en violant la Loi, que je sois frappé.
4 Et ceux qui étaient présents lui dirent : injuries-tu le souverain Sacrificateur de Dieu?
5 Et Paul dit : [mes] frères, je ne savais pas qu'il fût souverain Sacrificateur : car il est écrit : tu ne médiras point du Prince de ton peuple.
6 Et Paul sachant qu'une partie [d'entre eux] était des Sadducéens, et l'autre des Pharisiens, il s'écria dans le conseil : hommes frères! je suis Pharisien, fils de Pharisien, je suis tiré en cause pour l'espérance, et pour la résurrection des morts.
7 Et quand il eut dit cela, il s'émut une dissension entre les Pharisiens et les Sadducéens; et l'assemblée fut divisée.
8 Car les Sadducéens disent qu'il n'y a point de résurrection, ni d'Ange, ni d'esprit, mais les Pharisiens soutiennent l'un et l'autre.
9 Et il se fit un grand cri. Alors les Scribes du parti des Pharisiens se levèrent et contestèrent, disant : nous ne trouvons aucun mal en cet homme-ci; mais si un esprit ou un Ange lui a parlé, ne combattons point contre Dieu.
10 Et comme il se fit une grande division, le Tribun craignant que Paul ne fût mis en pièces par eux, commanda que les soldats descendissent, et qu'ils l'enlevassent du milieu d'eux, et l'amenassent en la forteresse.
11 Et la nuit suivante, le Seigneur se présenta à lui, et lui dit : Paul, aie bon courage : car comme tu as rendu témoignage de moi à Jérusalem, tout de même il faut que tu me rendes aussi témoignage à Rome.
12 Et quand le jour fut venu, quelques Juifs firent un complot et un serment avec exécration, disant qu'ils ne mangeraient ni ne boiraient jusqu'à ce qu'ils eussent tué Paul.
13 Et ils étaient plus de quarante qui avaient fait cette conjuration.
14 Et ils s'adressèrent aux principaux Sacrificateurs et aux Anciens, et leur dirent : nous avons fait un vœu, avec exécration de serment, que nous ne goûterions de rien jusqu'à ce que nous ayons tué Paul.
15 Vous donc maintenant faites savoir au Tribun par l'avis du Conseil, qu'il vous l'amène demain, comme si vous vouliez connaître de lui quelque chose plus exactement, et nous serons tous prêts pour le tuer avant qu'il approche.
16 Mais le fils de la sœur de Paul ayant appris cette conjuration, vint et entra dans la forteresse, et le rapporta à Paul.
17 Et Paul ayant appelé un des centeniers, lui dit : mène ce jeune homme au Tribun; car il a quelque chose à lui rapporter.
18 Il le prit donc, et le mena au Tribun, et il lui dit : Paul qui est prisonnier m'a appelé, et m'a prié de t'amener ce jeune homme qui a quelque chose à te dire.
19 Et le Tribun le prenant par la main, se retira à part, et lui demanda : qu'est-ce que tu as à me rapporter?
20 Et il lui dit : les Juifs ont conspiré de te prier que demain tu envoies Paul au Conseil, comme s'ils voulaient s'enquérir de lui plus exactement de quelque chose.
21 Mais n'y consens point : car plus de quarante hommes d'entre eux sont en embûches contre lui, qui ont fait un vœu avec exécration de serment, de ne manger ni boire jusqu'à ce qu'ils l'aient tué; et ils sont maintenant tous prêts, attendant ce que tu leur permettras.
22 Le Tribun donc renvoya le jeune homme, en lui commandant de ne dire à personne qu'il lui eût déclaré ces choses.
23 Puis ayant appelé deux centeniers, il leur dit : tenez prêts à trois heures de la nuit deux cents soldats, et soixante-dix hommes de cheval, et deux cents archers, pour aller à Césarée.
24 Et ayez soin qu'il y ait des montures prêtes, afin qu'ayant fait monter Paul, ils le mènent sûrement au Gouverneur Félix.
25 Et il lui écrivit une Lettre en ces termes :
26 Claude Lysias au très-excellent Gouverneur Félix, Salut.
27 Comme cet homme qui avait été saisi par les Juifs, était près d'être tué par eux, je suis survenu avec la garnison, et je le leur ai ôté, après avoir connu qu'il était [citoyen] Romain.
28 Et voulant savoir de quoi ils l'accusaient, je l'ai mené à leur Conseil.
29 Où j'ai trouvé qu'il était accusé touchant des questions de leur Loi, n'ayant commis aucun crime digne de mort, ou d'emprisonnement.
30 Et ayant été averti des embûches que les Juifs avaient dressées contre lui, je te l'ai incessamment envoyé; ayant aussi commandé aux accusateurs de dire devant toi les choses qu'ils ont contre lui. Bien te soit.
31 Les soldats donc, selon qu'il leur était enjoint, prirent Paul, et le menèrent de nuit à Antipatris.
32 Et le lendemain ils s'en retournèrent à la forteresse, ayant laissé Paul sous la conduite des gens de cheval;
33 Qui étant arrivés à Césarée, rendirent la lettre au Gouverneur, et lui présentèrent aussi Paul.
34 Et quand le Gouverneur eut lu la lettre, et qu'il eut demandé à Paul de quelle Province il était, ayant entendu qu'il était de Cilicie :
35 Je t'entendrai, lui dit-il, plus amplement quand tes accusateurs seront aussi venus. Et il commanda qu'il fût gardé au palais d'Hérode.
