1 And when we got safe {to land} we then knew that the island was called Melita.
2 But the barbarians shewed us no common kindness; for, having kindled a fire, they took us all in because of the rain that was falling and because of the cold.
3 And Paul having gathered a {certain} quantity of sticks together in a bundle and laid {it} on the fire, a viper coming out from the heat seized his hand.
4 And when the barbarians saw the beast hanging from his hand, they said to one another, This man is certainly a murderer, whom, {though} saved out of the sea, Nemesis has not allowed to live.
5 *He* however, having shaken off the beast into the fire, felt no harm.
6 But *they* expected that he would have swollen or fallen down suddenly dead. But when they had expected a long time and saw nothing unusual happen to him, changing their opinion, they said he was a god.
7 Now in the country surrounding that place were the lands belonging to the chief man of the island, by name Publius, who received us and gave {us} hospitality three days in a very friendly way.
8 And it happened that the father of Publius lay ill of fever and dysentery; to whom Paul entered in, and having prayed and laid his hands on him cured him.
9 But this having taken place, the rest also who had sicknesses in the island came and were healed:
10 who also honoured us with many honours, and on our leaving they made presents to us of what should minister to our wants.
11 And after three months we sailed in a ship which had wintered in the island, an Alexandrian, with {the} Dioscuri for its ensign.
12 And having come to Syracuse we remained three days.
13 Whence, going in a circuitous course, we arrived at Rhegium; and after one day, the wind having changed to south, on the second day we came to Puteoli,
14 where, having found brethren, we were begged to stay with them seven days. And thus we went to Rome.
15 And thence the brethren, having heard about us, came to meet us as far as Appii Forum and Tres Tabernae, whom when Paul saw, he thanked God and took courage.
16 And when we came to Rome, {the centurion delivered up the prisoners to the praetorian prefect, but} Paul was allowed to remain by himself with the soldier who kept him.
17 And it came to pass after three days, that he called together those who were the chief of the Jews; and when they had come together he said to them, Brethren, *I* having done nothing against the people or the customs of our forefathers, have been delivered a prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans,
18 who having examined me were minded to let me go, because there was nothing worthy of death in me.
19 But the Jews speaking against it, I was compelled to appeal to Caesar, not as having anything to accuse my nation of.
20 For this cause therefore I have called you to {me} to see and to speak to you; for on account of the hope of Israel I have this chain about me.
21 And they said to him, For our part, we have neither received letters from Judaea concerning thee, nor has any one of the brethren who has arrived reported or said anything evil concerning thee.
22 But we beg to hear of thee what thou thinkest, for as concerning this sect it is known to us that it is everywhere spoken against.
23 And having appointed him a day many came to him to the lodging, to whom he expounded, testifying of the kingdom of God, and persuading them concerning Jesus, both from the law of Moses and the prophets, from early morning to evening.
24 And some were persuaded of the things which were said, but some disbelieved.
25 And being disagreed among themselves they left; Paul having spoken one word, Well spoke the Holy Spirit through Esaias the prophet to our fathers,
26 saying, Go to this people, and say, Hearing ye shall hear and not understand, and seeing ye shall see and not perceive.
27 For the heart of this people has become fat, and they hear heavily with their ears, and they have closed their eyes; lest they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them.
28 Be it known to you therefore, that this salvation of God has been sent to the nations; *they* also will hear {it}.
29 {And he having said this, the Jews went away, having great reasoning among themselves.}
30 And he remained two whole years in his own hired lodging, and received all who came to him,
31 preaching the kingdom of God, and teaching the things concerning the Lord Jesus Christ, with all freedom unhinderedly.

2 Et les Barbares usèrent d'une singulière humanité envers nous, car ils allumèrent un grand feu, et nous reçurent tous, à cause de la pluie qui nous pressait, et à cause du froid.
3 Et Paul ayant ramassé quelque quantité de sarments, comme il les eut mis au feu, une vipère en sortit à cause de la chaleur, et lui saisit la main.
4 Et quand les Barbares virent cette bête pendant à sa main, ils se dirent l'un à l'autre : certainement cet homme est un meurtrier; puisqu'après être échappé de la mer, la vengeance ne permet pas qu'il vive.
5 Mais Paul ayant secoué la bête dans le feu, il n'en reçut aucun mal;
6 Au lieu qu'ils s'attendaient qu'il dût enfler, ou tomber subitement mort. Mais quand ils eurent longtemps attendu, et qu'ils eurent vu qu'il ne lui en arrivait aucn mal, ils changèrent [de langage], et dirent que c'était un Dieu.
7 Or en cet endroit-là étaient les possesions du principal de l'île, nommé Publius, qui nous reçut et nous logea durant trois jours avec beaucoup de bonté.
8 Et il arriva que le père de Publius était au lit malade de la fièvre et de la dyssenterie, et Paul l'étant allé voir, il fit la prière, lui imposa les mains, et le guérit.
9 Ce qui étant arrivé, tous les autres malades de l'île vinrent à lui, et ils furent guéris.
10 Lesquels aussi nous firent de grands honneurs, et à notre départ nous fournirent ce qui nous était nécessaire.
11 Trois mois après nous partîmes sur un navire d'Alexandrie qui avait hiverné dans l'île, et qui avait pour enseigne Castor et Pollux.
12 Et étant arrivés à Syracuse, nous y demeurâmes trois jours.
13 De là en côtoyant, nous arrivâmes à Rhège; et un jour après, le vent du Midi s'étant levé, nous vînmes le deuxième jour à Pouzzoles;
14 Où ayant trouvé des frères, nous fûmes priés de demeurer avec eux sept jours; et ensuite nous arrivâmes à Rome.
15 Et quand les frères qui y étaient eurent reçu de nos nouvelles, ils vinrent au-devant de nous jusques au Marché d'Appius, et aux Trois-boutiques; et Paul les voyant, rendit grâces à Dieu, et prit courage.
16 Et lorsque nous fûmes arrivés à Rome, le centenier livra les prisonniers au Préfet du Prétoire; mais quant à Paul, il lui fut permis de demeurer à part avec un soldat qui le gardait.
17 Or il arriva trois jours après, que Paul convoqua les principaux des Juifs; et quand ils furent venus, il leur dit : hommes frères! quoique je n'aie rien commis contre le peuple ni contre les coutumes des Pères, toutefois j'ai été arrêté prisonnier à Jérusalem, et livré entre les mains des Romains,
18 Qui après m'avoir examiné me voulaient relâcher, parce qu'il n'y avait en moi aucun crime digne de mort.
19 Mais les Juifs s'y opposant, j'ai été contraint d'en appeler à César; sans que j'aie pourtant dessein d'accuser ma nation.
20 C'est donc là le sujet pour lequel je vous ai appelés, afin de vous voir et de vous parler; car c'est pour l'espérance d'Israël que je suis chargé de cette chaîne.
21 Mais ils lui répondirent : nous n'avons point reçu de Lettres de Judée qui parlent de toi; ni aucun des frères n'est venu qui ait rapporté ou dit quelque mal de toi.
22 Cependant nous entendrons volontiers de toi quel est ton sentiment; car quant à cette secte, il nous est connu qu'on la contredit partout.
23 Et après lui avoir assigné un jour, plusieurs vinrent auprès de lui dans son logis, auxquels il expliquait par plusieurs témoignages le Royaume de Dieu, et depuis le matin jusqu'au soir il les portait à croire ce qui concerne Jésus, tant par la Loi de Moïse que par les Prophètes.
24 Et les uns furent persuadés par les choses qu'il disait; et les autres n'y croyaient point.
25 C'est pourquoi n'étant pas d'accord entre eux, ils se retirèrent, après que Paul leur eut dit cette parole : le Saint-Esprit a bien parlé à nos Pères par Esaïe le Prophète,
26 En disant : va vers ce peuple, et [lui] dis : vous écouterez de vos oreilles, et vous n'entendrez point; et en regardant vous verrez, et vous n'apercevrez point.
27 Car le cœur de ce peuple est engraissé; et ils ont ouï dur de leurs oreilles, et ont fermé leurs yeux; de peur qu'ils ne voient des yeux, qu'ils n'entendent des oreilles, qu'ils ne comprennent du cœur, qu'ils ne se convertissent, et que je ne les guérisse.
28 Sachez donc que ce salut de Dieu est envoyé aux Gentils, et ils l'entendront.
29 Quand il eut dit ces choses, les Juifs se retirèrent d'avec lui, y ayant une grande contestation entre eux.
30 Mais Paul demeura deux ans entiers dans une maison qu'il avait louée pour lui, où il recevait tous ceux qui le venaient voir,
31 Prêchant le Royaume de Dieu, et enseignant les choses qui regardent le Seigneur Jésus-Christ avec toute liberté de parler, [et] sans aucun empêchement.
