1 And Bildad the Shuhite answered and said,
2 How long wilt thou speak these things? and the words of thy mouth be a strong wind?
3 Doth *God pervert judgment, and the Almighty pervert justice?
4 If thy children have sinned against him, he hath also given them over into the hand of their transgression.
5 If thou seek earnestly unto *God, and make thy supplication to the Almighty,
6 If thou be pure and upright, surely now he will awake for thee, and make the habitation of thy righteousness prosperous;
7 And though thy beginning was small, yet thine end shall be very great.
8 For inquire, I pray thee, of the former generation, and attend to the researches of their fathers;
9 For we are {but} of yesterday, and know nothing, for our days upon earth are a shadow.
10 Shall not they teach thee, {and} tell thee, and utter words out of their heart?
11 Doth the papyrus shoot up without mire? doth the reed-grass grow without water?
12 Whilst it is yet in its greenness {and} not cut down, it withereth before any {other} grass.
13 So are the paths of all that forget *God; and the profane man's hope shall perish,
14 Whose confidence shall be cut off, and his reliance is a spider's web.
15 He shall lean upon his house, and it shall not stand; he shall lay hold on it, but it shall not endure.
16 He is full of sap before the sun, and his sprout shooteth forth over his garden;
17 His roots are entwined about the stoneheap; he seeth the place of stones.
18 If he destroy him from his place, then it shall deny him: I have not seen thee!
19 Behold, this is the joy of his way, and out of the dust shall others grow.
20 Behold, *God will not cast off a perfect man, neither will he take evil-doers by the hand.
21 Whilst he would fill thy mouth with laughing and thy lips with shouting,
22 They that hate thee shall be clothed with shame, and the tent of the wicked be no more.
1 Alors Bildad Suhite prit la parole, et dit :
2 Jusqu'à quand parleras-tu ainsi, et les paroles de ta bouche seront-elles comme un vent impétueux?
3 Le [Dieu] Fort renverserait-il le droit, et le Tout-puissant renverserait-il la justice?
4 Si tes enfants ont péché contre lui, il les a aussi livrés en la main de leur crime.
5 [Mais] si tu recherches le [Dieu] Fort de bon matin, et que tu demandes grâce au Tout-puissant;
6 Si tu es pur et droit, certainement il se réveillera pour toi, et fera prospérer la demeure de ta justice.
7 Et ton commencement aura été petit, mais ta dernière condition sera beaucoup accrue.
8 Car, je te prie, enquiers-toi des générations précédentes, et applique-toi à t'informer soigneusement de leurs pères.
9 Car nous ne sommes que du jour d'hier, et nous ne savons rien; parce que nos jours sont sur la terre comme une ombre.
10 Ceux-là ne t'enseigneront-ils pas, ne te parleront-ils pas, et ne tireront-ils pas des discours de leur cœur?
11 Le jonc montera-t-il sans qu'il y ait du limon? l'herbe des marais croîtra-t-elle sans eau?
12 Ne se flétrira-t-elle pas même avant toute herbe, bien qu'elle soit encore en sa verdure, et qu'on ne la cueille point?
13 Il en sera ainsi des voies de tous ceux qui oublient le [Dieu] Fort; et l'espérance de l'hypocrite périra.
14 Son espérance sera frustrée, et sa confiance sera [comme] une toile d'araignée.
15 Il s'appuiera sur sa maison, et elle n'aura point de fermeté; il la saisira de la main, et elle ne demeurera point debout.
16 Mais [l'homme intègre] est plein de vigueur étant exposé au soleil, et ses jets poussent par dessus son jardin.
17 Ses racines s'entrelacent près de la fontaine, et il embrasse le bâtiment de pierre.
18 Fera-t-on qu'il ne soit plus en sa place, et que [le lieu où il était] le renonce, [en lui disant] : Je ne t'ai point vu?
19 Voilà, quelle est la joie qu'il a de sa voie, même il en germera d'autres de la poussière.
20 Voilà, le [Dieu] Fort ne rejette point l'homme intègre; mais il ne soutient point la main des méchants.
21 De sorte qu'il remplira ta bouche de ris, et tes lèvres de chants d'allégresse.
22 Ceux qui te haïssent seront revêtus de honte, et le tabernacle des méchants ne sera plus.
