1 Call, I pray thee! Is there any that answereth thee? and to which of the holy ones wilt thou turn?
2 For vexation killeth the foolish man, and envy slayeth the simple.
3 I myself saw the foolish taking root, but suddenly I cursed his habitation.
4 His children are far from safety, and they are crushed in the gate, and there is no deliverer:
5 Whose harvest the hungry eateth up, and taketh even out of the thorns; and the snare gapeth for his substance.
6 For evil cometh not forth from the dust, neither doth trouble spring out of the ground;
7 For man is born to trouble, as the sparks fly upwards.
8 But as for me I will seek unto *God, and unto God commit my cause;
9 Who doeth great things and unsearchable, marvellous things without number;
10 Who giveth rain on the face of the earth, and sendeth waters on the face of the fields;
11 Setting up on high those that are low; and mourners are exalted to prosperity.
12 He disappointeth the devices of the crafty, and their hands carry not out the enterprise.
13 He taketh the wise in their own craftiness; and the counsel of the wily is carried headlong:
14 They meet with darkness in the daytime, and grope at midday as in the night.
15 And he saveth the needy from the sword, from their mouth, and from the hand of the mighty.
16 So the poor hath what he hopeth for, and unrighteousness stoppeth her mouth.
17 Behold, happy is the man whom +God correcteth; therefore despise not the chastening of the Almighty.
18 For he maketh sore, and bindeth up; he woundeth, and his hands make whole.
19 He will deliver thee in six troubles, and in seven there shall no evil touch thee.
20 In famine he will redeem thee from death, and in war from the power of the sword.
21 Thou shalt be hidden from the scourge of the tongue; and thou shalt not be afraid of destruction when it cometh.
22 At destruction and famine thou shalt laugh, and of the beasts of the earth thou shalt not be afraid.
23 For thou shalt be in league with the stones of the field, and the beasts of the field shall be at peace with thee.
24 And thou shalt know that thy tent is in peace; and thou wilt survey thy fold, and miss nothing.
25 And thou shalt know that thy seed is numerous, and thine offspring as the herb of the earth.
26 Thou shalt come to the grave in a ripe age, as a shock of corn is brought in in its season.
27 Behold this, we have searched it out, so it is; hear it, and know thou it for thyself.
1 Crie maintenant; y aura-t-il quelqu'un qui te réponde? et vers qui d'entre les saints te tourneras-tu?
2 Certainement la colère tue le fou, et le dépit fait mourir le sot.
3 J'ai vu le fou qui s'enracinait, mais j'ai aussitôt maudit sa demeure.
4 Ses enfants, bien loin de trouver de la sûreté, sont écrasés aux portes, et personne ne les délivre.
5 Sa moisson est dévorée par l'affamé, qui même la ravit d'entre les épines; et le voleur engloutit leurs biens.
6 Or le tourment ne sort pas de la poussière, et le travail ne germe pas de la terre;
7 Quoique l'homme naisse pour être agité, comme les étincelles pour voler en haut.
8 Mais moi, j'aurais recours au [Dieu] Fort, et j'adresserais mes paroles à Dieu,
9 Qui fait des choses si grandes qu'on ne les peut sonder, [et] tant de choses merveilleuses, qu'il est impossible de les compter.
10 Qui répand la pluie sur la face de la terre, et qui envoie les eaux sur les campagnes.
11 Qui élève ceux qui sont bas, et qui fait que ceux qui sont en deuil sont en sûreté dans une haute retraite.
12 Il dissipe les pensées des hommes rusés, de sorte qu'ils ne viennent point à bout de leurs entreprises.
13 Il surprend les sages en leur ruse, et le conseil des méchants est renversé.
14 De jour ils rencontrent les ténèbres, et ils marchent à tâtons en plein midi, comme dans la nuit.
15 Mais il délivre le pauvre de [leur] épée, de leur bouche, et de la main de l'homme puissant.
16 Ainsi il arrive au pauvre ce qu'il a espéré, mais l'iniquité a la bouche fermée.
17 Voilà, ô que bienheureux est celui que Dieu châtie! ne rejette donc point le châtiment du Tout-puissant.
18 Car c'est lui qui fait la plaie, et qui la bande; il blesse, et ses mains guérissent.
19 Il te délivrera dans six afflictions, et à la septième le mal ne te touchera point.
20 En temps de famine il te garantira de la mort, et en temps de guerre [il te préservera] de l'épée.
21 Tu seras à couvert du fléau de la langue, et tu n'auras point peur du pillage quand il arrivera;
22 Tu riras durant le pillage et durant la famine, et tu n'auras point peur des bêtes sauvages.
23 Même tu feras accord avec les pierres des champs, tu seras en paix avec les bêtes sauvages.
24 Tu connaîtras que la prospérité sera dans ta tente; tu pourvoiras à ta demeure, et tu n'y seras point trompé.
25 Et tu verras croître ta postérité et tes descendants, comme l'herbe de la terre.
26 Tu entreras au sépulcre en vieillesse, comme un monceau de gerbes s'entasse en sa saison.
27 Voilà, nous avons examiné cela, et il est ainsi; écoute-le, et le sache pour ton bien.
