1 And Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said,
2 If a word were essayed to thee, wouldest thou be grieved? But who can refrain from speaking?
3 Behold, thou hast instructed many, and thou hast strengthened the weak hands;
4 Thy words have upholden him that was stumbling, and thou hast braced up the bending knees:
5 But now it is come upon thee, and thou grievest; it toucheth thee, and thou art troubled.
6 Hath not thy piety been thy confidence, and the perfection of thy ways thy hope?
7 Remember, I pray thee, who that was innocent has perished? and where were the upright cut off?
8 Even as I have seen, they that plough iniquity and sow mischief, reap the same.
9 By the breath of +God they perish, and by the blast of his nostrils are they consumed.
10 The roar of the lion, and the voice of the fierce lion, and the teeth of the young lions, are broken;
11 The old lion perisheth for lack of prey, and the whelps of the lioness are scattered.
12 Now to me a word was secretly brought, and mine ear received a whisper thereof.
13 In thoughts from visions of the night, when deep sleep falleth on men: -
14 Fear came on me, and trembling, and made all my bones to shake;
15 And a spirit passed before my face-the hair of my flesh stood up-
16 It stood still; I could not discern the appearance thereof: a form was before mine eyes; I heard a slight murmur and a voice:
17 Shall {mortal} man be more just than +God? Shall a man be purer than his Maker?
18 Lo, he trusteth not his servants, and his angels he chargeth with folly:
19 How much more them that dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, who are crushed as the moth!
20 From morning to evening are they smitten: without any heeding it, they perish for ever.
21 Is not their tent-cord torn away in them? they die, and without wisdom.
1 Alors Eliphas Témanite prit la parole, et dit :
2 Si nous entreprenons de te parler, te fâcheras-tu? mais qui pourrait s'empêcher de parler?
3 Voilà, tu en as enseigné plusieurs, et tu as renforcé les mains lâches.
4 Tes paroles ont affermi ceux qui chancelaient, et tu as fortifié les genoux qui pliaient.
5 Et maintenant que ceci t'est arrivé, tu t'en fâches! il t'a atteint, et tu en es tout troublé.
6 Ta piété n'a-t-elle pas été ton espérance? et l'intégrité de tes voies [n'a-t-elle pas été] ton attente?
7 Rappelle, je te prie, dans ton souvenir, où est l'innocent qui ait jamais péri, et où les hommes droits ont-ils [jamais] été exterminés?
8 Mais j'ai vu que ceux qui labourent l'iniquité, et qui sèment l'outrage, les moissonnent.
9 Ils périssent par le souffle de Dieu, et ils sont consumés par le vent de ses narines.
10 [Il étouffe] le rugissement du lion, et le cri d'un grand lion, et il arrache les dents des lionceaux.
11 Le lion périt par faute de proie, et les petits du vieux lion sont dissipés.
12 Mais quant à moi, une parole m'a été adressée en secret, et mon oreille en a entendu quelque peu.
13 Pendant les pensées diverses des visions de la nuit, quand un profond sommeil saisit les hommes,
14 Une frayeur et un tremblement me saisirent qui étonnèrent tous mes os.
15 Un esprit passa devant moi, [et] mes cheveux en furent tout hérissés.
16 Il se tint là, mais je ne connus point son visage; une représentation était devant mes yeux, et j'ouïs une voix basse [qui disait] :
17 L'homme sera-t-il plus juste que Dieu? l'homme sera-t-il plus pur que celui qui l'a fait?
18 Voici, il ne s'assure point sur ses serviteurs, et il met la lumière dans ses Anges :
19 Combien moins [s'assurera-t-il] en ceux qui demeurent dans des maisons d'argile; en ceux dont le fondement est dans la poussière, et qui sont consumés à la rencontre d'un vermisseau?
20 Du matin au soir ils sont brisés, et, sans qu'on s'en aperçoive, ils périssent pour toujours.
21 L'excellence qui était en eux, n'a-t-elle pas été emportée? Ils meurent sans être sages.
