1 And it came to pass on one of the days, as he was teaching the people in the temple, and announcing the glad tidings, the chief priests and the scribes with the elders came up,
2 and spoke to him saying, Tell us by what authority thou doest these things, or who is it who has given thee this authority?
3 And he answering said to them, *I* also will ask you {one} thing, and tell me:
4 The baptism of John, was it of heaven or of men?
5 And they reasoned among themselves, saying, If we should say, Of heaven, he will say, Why have ye not believed him?
6 but if we should say, Of men, the whole people will stone us, for they are persuaded that John was a prophet.
7 And they answered, they did not know whence.
8 And Jesus said to them, Neither do *I* tell you by what authority I do these things.
9 And he began to speak to the people this parable: A man planted a vineyard and let it out to husbandmen, and left the country for a long time.
10 And in the season he sent to the husbandmen a bondman, that they might give to him of the fruit of the vineyard; but the husbandmen, having beaten him, sent {him} away empty.
11 And again he sent another bondman; but they, having beaten him also, and cast insult upon him, sent {him} away empty.
12 And again he sent a third; and they, having wounded him also, cast {him} out.
13 And the lord of the vineyard said, What shall I do? I will send my beloved son: perhaps when they see him they will respect {him}.
14 But when the husbandmen saw him, they reasoned among themselves, saying, This is the heir; {come,} let us kill him, that the inheritance may become ours.
15 And having cast him forth out of the vineyard, they killed {him}. What therefore shall the lord of the vineyard do to them?
16 He will come and destroy those husbandmen, and will give the vineyard to others. And when they heard it they said, May it never be!
17 But he looking at them said, What then is this that is written, The stone which they that builded rejected, this has become the corner-stone?
18 Every one falling on this stone shall be broken, but on whomsoever it shall fall, it shall grind him to powder.
19 And the chief priests and the scribes sought the same hour to lay hands on him, and they feared the people; for they knew that he had spoken this parable of them.
20 And having watched {him}, they sent out suborned persons, pretending to be just men, that they might take hold of him in {his} language, so that they might deliver him up to the power and authority of the governor.
21 And they asked him saying, Teacher, we know that thou sayest and teachest rightly, and acceptest no {man's} person, but teachest with truth the way of God:
22 Is it lawful for us to give tribute to Caesar, or not?
23 But perceiving their deceit he said to them, Why do ye tempt me?
24 Shew me a denarius. Whose image and superscription has it? And answering they said, Caesar's.
25 And he said to them, Pay therefore what is Caesar's to Caesar, and what is God's to God.
26 And they were not able to take hold of him in {his} expressions before the people, and, wondering at his answer, they were silent.
27 And some of the Sadducees, who deny that there is any resurrection, coming up {to him},
28 demanded of him saying, Teacher, Moses wrote to us, If any one's brother, who has a wife, die, and he die childless, his brother shall take the wife and raise up seed to his brother.
29 There were then seven brethren: and the first, having taken a wife, died childless;
30 and the second {took the woman, and *he* died childless};
31 and the third took her: and in like manner also the seven left no children and died;
32 and last of all the woman also died.
33 In the resurrection therefore of which of them does she become wife, for the seven had her as wife?
34 And Jesus said to them, The sons of this world marry and are given in marriage,
35 but they who are counted worthy to have part in that world, and the resurrection from among {the} dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage;
36 for neither can they die any more, for they are equal to angels, and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection.
37 But that the dead rise, even Moses shewed in {the section of} the bush, when he called {the} Lord the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob;
38 but he is not God of {the} dead but of {the} living; for all live for him.
39 And some of the scribes answering said, Teacher, thou hast well spoken.
40 For they did not dare any more to ask him anything.
41 And he said to them, How do they say that the Christ is David's son,
42 and David himself says in the book of Psalms, The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at my right hand
43 until I put thine enemies {as} footstool of thy feet?
44 David therefore calls him Lord, and how is he his son?
45 And, as all the people were listening, he said to his disciples,
46 Beware of the scribes, who like to walk about in long robes, and who love salutations in the market-places, and first seats in the synagogues, and first places at suppers;
47 who devour the houses of widows, and as a pretext make long prayers. These shall receive a severer judgment.
1 Et il arriva un de ces jours-là, comme il enseignait le peuple dans le Temple, et qu'il évangélisait, que les principaux Sacrificateurs et les Scribes survinrent avec les Anciens.
2 Et ils lui parlèrent, en disant : dis-nous par quelle autorité tu fais ces choses, ou qui est celui qui t'a donné cette autorité?
3 Et Jésus répondant leur dit : je vous interrogerai aussi sur un article, et répondez-moi.
4 Le Baptême de Jean était-il du ciel, ou des hommes?
5 Or ils disputaient entre eux, disant : si nous disons : du ciel; il dira : pourquoi donc ne l'avez-vous point cru?
6 Et si nous disons : des hommes, tout le peuple nous lapidera; car ils sont persuadés que Jean était un Prophète;
7 C'est pourquoi ils répondirent qu'ils ne savaient d'où il était.
8 Et Jésus leur dit : je ne vous dirai point aussi par quelle autorité je fais ces choses.
9 Alors il se mit à dire au peuple cette parabole : Un homme planta une vigne, et la loua à des vignerons, et fut longtemps dehors.
10 Et dans la saison [du fruit], il envoya un serviteur vers les vignerons, afin qu'ils lui donnassent du fruit de la vigne, mais les vignerons l'ayant battu, le renvoyèrent à vide.
11 Il leur envoya encore un autre serviteur; mais ils le battirent aussi, et après l'avoir traité indignement, ils le renvoyèrent à vide.
12 Il en envoya encore un troisième, mais ils le blessèrent aussi, et le jetèrent dehors.
13 Alors le seigneur de la vigne dit : que ferai-je? j'y enverrai mon fils, le bien aimé; peut-être que quand ils le verront, ils le respecteront.
14 Mais quand les vignerons le virent, ils raisonnèrent entre eux, en disant : celui-ci est l'héritier; venez, tuons-le, afin que l'héritage soit à nous.
15 Et ils le jetèrent hors de la vigne, et le tuèrent. Que leur fera donc le maître de la vigne?
16 Il viendra, et fera périr ces vignerons-là, et il donnera la vigne à d'autres. Ce qu'eux ayant entendu, ils dirent : à Dieu ne plaise!
17 Alors il les regarda, et dit : que veut donc dire ce qui est écrit : la pierre que ceux qui bâtissent ont rejetée, est devenue la maîtresse pierre du coin?
18 Quiconque tombera sur cette pierre, sera brisé; et elle écrasera celui sur qui elle tombera.
19 Les principaux Sacrificateurs et les Scribes cherchèrent dans ce même instant à mettre les mains sur lui : car ils connurent bien qu'il avait dit cette parabole contre eux, mais ils craignirent le peuple.
20 Et l'observant ils envoyèrent des gens concertés, qui contrefaisaient les gens de bien, pour le surprendre en paroles, afin de le livrer à la domination et à la puissance du Gouverneur,
21 Lesquels l'interrogèrent, en disant : Maître, nous savons que tu parles et que tu enseignes conformément à la justice, et que tu ne regardes point à l'apparence des personnes, mais que tu enseignes la voie de Dieu en vérité.
22 Nous est-il permis de payer le tribut à César, ou non?
23 Mais lui ayant aperçu leur ruse, leur dit : pourquoi me tentez-vous?
24 Montrez-moi un denier; de qui a-t-il l'image et l'inscription? ils lui répondirent : de César.
25 Et il leur dit : rendez donc à César les choses qui sont à César; et à Dieu les choses qui sont à Dieu.
26 Ainsi ils ne purent rien trouver à redire dans sa réponse en présence du peuple; mais tout étonnés de sa réponse, ils se turent.
27 Alors quelques-uns des Sadducéens, qui nient formellement la résurrection, s'approchèrent, et l'interrogèrent,
28 Disant : Maître, Moïse nous a laissé par écrit, que si le frère de quelqu'un est mort ayant une femme, et qu'il soit mort sans enfants, son frère prenne sa femme, et qu'il suscite des enfants à son frère.
29 Or il y eut sept frères, dont l'aîné prit une femme, et mourut sans enfants.
30 Et le second la prit, et mourut aussi sans enfants.
31 Puis le troisième la prit, et de même tous les sept; et ils moururent sans avoir laissé des enfants.
32 Et après tous la femme aussi mourut.
33 Duquel d'eux donc sera-t-elle femme en la résurrection? car les sept l'ont eue pour femme.
34 Et Jésus répondant leur dit : les enfants de ce siècle prennent et sont pris en mariage.
35 Mais ceux qui seront faits dignes d'obtenir ce siècle-là et la résurrection des morts, ne prendront ni ne seront pris en mariage;
36 Car ils ne pourront plus mourir, parce qu'ils seront semblables aux Anges, et qu'ils seront fils de Dieu, étant fils de la résurrection.
37 Or que les morts ressuscitent, Moïse même l'a montré auprès du buisson, quand il appelle le Seigneur le Dieu d'Abraham, et le Dieu d'Isaac, et le Dieu de Jacob.
38 Or il n'est point le Dieu des morts, mais des vivants : car tous vivent en lui.
39 Et quelques-uns des Scribes prenant la parole, dirent : Maître, tu as bien dit.
40 Et ils ne l'osèrent plus interroger de rien.
41 Mais lui leur dit : comment dit-on que le Christ est Fils de David.
42 Car David lui-même dit au Livre des Psaumes : le Seigneur a dit à mon Seigneur : assieds-toi à ma droite,
43 Jusqu'à ce que j'aie mis tes ennemis pour le marchepied de tes pieds.
44 [Puis] donc que David l'appelle [son] Seigneur, comment, est-il son Fils?
45 Et comme tout le peuple écoutait, il dit à ses Disciples :
46 Donnez-vous garde des Scribes, qui se plaisent à se promener en robes longues, et qui aiment les salutations dans les marchés, et les premières chaires dans les Synagogues, et les premières places dans les festins;
47 Et qui dévorent entièrement les maisons des veuves, même sous prétexte de faire de longues prières; car ils en recevront une plus grande condamnation.
