1 And it came to pass when Saul had returned from following the Philistines, that it was told him, saying, Behold, David is in the wilderness of Engedi. 2 And Saul took three thousand men, chosen out of all Israel, and went to seek David and his men upon the rocks of the wild goats. 3 And he came to the sheepfolds by the way, where was a cave; and Saul went in to cover his feet; and David and his men were abiding in the recesses of the cave. 4 And David’s men said to him, Behold the day of which Jehovah said to thee, Behold, I will give thine enemy into thy hand, that thou mayest do to him as it shall seem good to thee. And David arose, and cut off the skirt of Saul’s robe secretly. 5 And it came to pass afterwards that David’s heart smote him, because he had cut off Saul’s skirt. 6 And he said to his men, Jehovah forbid that I should do this thing to my master, Jehovah’s anointed, to stretch forth my hand against him, for he is the anointed of Jehovah. 7 And David checked his men with these words, and suffered them not to rise against Saul. And Saul rose up out of the cave, and went on his way. 8 David also arose afterwards, and went out of the cave, and cried after Saul, saying, My lord the king! And when Saul looked behind him, David bowed with his face to the earth, and did obeisance.

9 And David said to Saul, Why dost thou listen to words of men, saying, Behold, David seeks thy hurt? 10 Behold, this day thine eyes have seen how that Jehovah had given thee this day into my hand in the cave; and they bade me kill thee; but mine eye spared thee; and I said, I will not put forth my hand against my lord, for he is the anointed of Jehovah. 11 And see, my father, yes, see the skirt of thy robe in my hand. For in that I cut off the skirt of thy robe, and killed thee not, know and see that there is neither evil nor transgression in my hand, and I have not sinned against thee; yet thou liest in wait for my life to take it. 12 Jehovah judge between me and thee, and Jehovah avenge me of thee; but my hand shall not be upon thee. 13 As saith the proverb of the ancients, Wickedness proceedeth from the wicked; but my hand shall not be upon thee. 14 After whom is the king of Israel come out? after whom dost thou pursue? after a dead dog, after a single flea. 15 Jehovah therefore shall be judge, and judge between me and thee, and see, and plead my cause, and do me justice in delivering me out of thy hand.

16 And as soon as David had ended speaking these words to Saul, Saul said, Is this thy voice, my son David? And Saul lifted up his voice and wept. 17 And he said to David, Thou art more righteous than I; for thou hast rewarded me good, whereas I have rewarded thee evil. 18 And thou hast shewed this day how that thou hast dealt well with me, forasmuch as when Jehovah had delivered me up into thy hand, thou didst not kill me. 19 For if a man find his enemy, will he let him go well away? wherefore Jehovah reward thee good for that thou hast done to me this day. 20 And now behold, I know that thou shalt certainly be king, and that the kingdom of Israel shall be established in thy hand. 21 Swear now therefore to me by Jehovah, that thou wilt not cut off my seed after me, and that thou wilt not destroy my name out of my father’s house. 22 And David swore to Saul. And Saul went home; and David and his men went up to the stronghold.

David i-au zis: „Iată ziua în care Domnul îți zice: ‘Dau pe vrăjmașul tău în mâinile tale; fă-i ce-ți va plăcea.’" David s-a sculat și a tăiat încet colțul hainei lui Saul. 5 După aceea, inima*2 Sam. 24:10. îi bătea, pentru că tăiase colțul hainei lui Saul. 6 Și a zis oamenilor săi: „Să mă*Cap. 26:11. ferească Domnul să fac împotriva domnului meu, care este unsul Domnului, o așa faptă ca să pun mâna pe el! Căci el este unsul Domnului." 7 Cu aceste cuvinte, David a oprit*Ps. 7:4.Mat. 5:44.Rom. 12:17,19. pe oamenii săi și i-a împiedicat să se arunce asupra lui Saul. Apoi Saul s-a sculat să iasă din peșteră și și-a văzut înainte de drum. 8 După aceea, David s-a sculat și a ieșit din peșteră. El a început să strige atunci după Saul: „Împărate, domnul meu!" Saul s-a uitat înapoi, și David s-a plecat cu fața la pământ și s-a închinat. 9 David a zis lui Saul: „De ce asculți*Ps. 141:6.Prov. 16:28;17:9. tu de vorbele oamenilor care zic: ‘David îți vrea răul’? 10 Vezi acum cu ochii tăi că Domnul te dăduse astăzi în mâinile mele în peșteră. Oamenii mei mă îndemnau să te omor, dar te-am cruțat și am zis: ‘Nu voi pune mâna pe domnul meu, căci este unsul Domnului.’ 11 Uite, părintele meu, uite colțul hainei tale în mâna mea. Fiindcă ți-am tăiat colțul hainei și nu te-am ucis, să știi și să vezi că în purtarea mea nu este nici răutate*Ps. 7:3;35:7., nici răzvrătire și că n-am păcătuit împotriva ta. Totuși tu îmi întinzi curse*Cap. 26:20., ca să-mi iei viața. 12 Judece*Gen. 16:5.Jud. 11:27. Cap. 26:10.Iov 5:8. Domnul între mine și tine și Domnul să mă răzbune pe tine, dar eu nu voi pune mâna pe tine. 13 ‘Răul de la cei răi vine’, zice vechea zicală. De aceea eu nu voi pune mâna pe tine. 14 Împotriva cui a pornit împăratul lui Israel? Pe cine urmărești tu? Un câine*Cap. 17:43.2 Sam. 9:8. mort, un*Cap. 26:21. purice. 15 Domnul*Vers. 12. va judeca și va hotărî între mine și tine, El va*2 Cron. 24:22. vedea, El îmi va*Ps. 35:1;43:1;119:154.Mica 7:9. apăra pricina și El îmi va face dreptate, izbăvindu-mă din mâna ta." 16 Când a sfârșit David de spus aceste vorbe lui Saul, Saul a zis: „Glasul*Cap. 26:17. tău este, fiule David?" Și Saul a ridicat glasul și a plâns. 17 Și a zis*Cap. 26:21. lui David: „Tu ești mai bun*Gen. 38:29. decât mine, căci tu mi-ai făcut*Mat. 5:44. bine, iar eu ți-am făcut rău. 18 Tu îți arăți azi bunătatea cu care te porți față de mine, căci Domnul*Cap. 26:23. mă dăduse în mâinile tale, și nu m-ai omorât. 19 Dacă întâlnește cineva pe vrăjmașul lui, îl lasă oare să-și urmeze drumul în liniște? Domnul să-ți răsplătească pentru ce mi-ai făcut în ziua aceasta! 20 Acum, iată, știu*Cap. 23:17. că tu vei domni și că împărăția lui Israel va rămâne în mâinile tale. 21 Jură-mi*Gen. 21:23. dar pe Domnul că*2 Sam. 21:6,8. nu-mi vei nimici sămânța mea după mine și că nu-mi vei șterge numele din casa tatălui meu." 22 David a jurat lui Saul. Apoi Saul a plecat acasă, iar David și oamenii lui s-au suit în locul întărit*Cap. 23:29..
