1 And the ark of Jehovah was in the country of the Philistines seven months. 2 And the Philistines called for the priests and the diviners, saying, What shall we do with the ark of Jehovah? tell us wherewith we shall send it to its place. 3 And they said, If ye send away the ark of the God*GodHebrew: Elohim of Israel, send it not empty; ye must at any rate return him a trespass-offering: then ye shall be healed, and it shall be known to you why his hand is not removed from you. 4 Then they said, What is the trespass-offering which we shall return to him? And they said, Five golden hemorrhoids, and five golden mice, the number of the lords of the Philistines; for one plague is upon them all, and upon your lords. 5 And ye shall make images of your hemorrhoids, and images of your mice that destroy the land, and give glory to the God*GodHebrew: Elohim of Israel: perhaps he will lighten his hand from off you, and from off your gods, and from off your land. 6 And why will ye harden your heart, as the Egyptians and Pharaoh hardened their heart? When he had wrought mightily among them, did they not let them go, and they departed? 7 And now make a new cart, and take two milch kine, on which there has come no yoke, and tie the kine to the cart, and bring their calves home from them; 8 and take the ark of Jehovah, and lay it upon the cart, and the golden jewels, which ye return him as a trespass-offering, put in the coffer by the side thereof; and send it away that it may go. 9 And see, if it go up by the way of its own border to Beth-shemesh, it is he who has done us this great evil; if not, then we shall know that it is not his hand that touched us; it was a chance that happened to us.

10 And the men did so, and took two milch kine, and tied them to the cart, and shut up their calves at home. 11 And they laid the ark of Jehovah upon the cart, and the coffer with the golden mice and the images of their sores. 12 And the kine went straight forward on the way to Beth-shemesh; they went by the one high way, lowing as they went; and they turned not aside to the right hand or to the left; and the lords of the Philistines went after them as far as the border of Beth-shemesh. 13 And they of Beth-shemesh were reaping the wheat-harvest in the valley; and they lifted up their eyes and saw the ark, and rejoiced to see it. 14 And the cart came into the field of Joshua the Beth-shemeshite, and stood there; and a great stone was there. And they clave the wood of the cart, and offered up the kine as a burnt-offering to Jehovah. 15 And the Levites took down the ark of Jehovah, and the coffer that was with it, in which were the golden jewels, and put them on the great stone; and the men of Beth-shemesh offered up burnt-offerings and sacrificed sacrifices the same day to Jehovah. 16 And the five lords of the Philistines saw it, and returned to Ekron the same day. 17 And these are the golden sores which the Philistines returned as a trespass-offering to Jehovah: for Ashdod one, for Gazah one, for Ashkelon one, for Gath one, for Ekron one; 18 and the golden mice, according to the number of all the cities of the Philistines belonging to the five lords, both fortified cities and villages of the peasantry; and they brought them as far as the great stone of Abel, whereon they set down the ark of Jehovah, which is to this day in the field of Joshua the Beth-shemeshite.

19 And he smote among the men of Beth-shemesh, because they had looked into the ark of Jehovah, and smote of the people seventy men; and the people lamented, because Jehovah had smitten the people with a great slaughter. 20 And the men of Beth-shemesh said, Who is able to stand before Jehovah, this holy God*GodHebrew: Elohim and to whom shall he go up from us? 21 And they sent messengers to the inhabitants of Kirjath-jearim, saying, The Philistines have brought again the ark of Jehovah; come down, fetch it up to you.

1 Chivotul Domnului a fost șapte luni în țara filistenilor. 2 Și filistenii au chemat*Gen. 41:8.Exod 7:11.Dan. 2:2;5:7.Mat. 2:4. pe preoți și pe ghicitori și au zis: „Ce să facem cu chivotul Domnului? Arătați-ne cum trebuie să-l trimitem înapoi la locul lui." 3 Ei au răspuns: „Dacă trimiteți înapoi chivotul Dumnezeului lui Israel, să nu-l trimiteți cu mâna goală*Exod 23:15.Deut. 16:16., ci aduceți lui Dumnezeu o jertfă*Lev. 5:15,16. pentru vină; atunci vă veți vindeca și veți ști*Vers. 9. pentru ce nu s-a îndepărtat mâna Lui de peste voi." 4 Filistenii au zis: „Ce jertfă pentru vină să-I aducem?" Ei au răspuns: „Cinci umflături de aur și cinci șoareci de aur, după*Vers. 17,18.Ios. 13:3.Jud. 3:3. numărul domnitorilor filistenilor, căci aceeași urgie a fost peste voi toți și peste domnitorii voștri. 5 Faceți niște chipuri după umflăturile*Cap. 5:6. voastre și niște chipuri după șoarecii voștri care pustiesc țara și dați*Ios. 7:19.Is. 42:12.Mal. 2:2.Ioan 9:24. slavă Dumnezeului lui Israel: poate că va înceta*Cap. 5:6,11.Ps. 39:10. să-Și apese mâna peste voi, peste dumnezeii*Cap. 5:3,4,7. voștri și peste țara voastră. 6 Pentru ce să vă împietriți inima, cum*Exod 7:13;8:15;14:17. și-au împietrit inima egiptenii și Faraon? Nu i-a pedepsit El și n-au lăsat*Exod 12:31. ei atunci pe copiii lui Israel să plece? 7 Acum, faceți un*2 Sam. 6:3. car nou de tot și luați două vaci tinere, care dau țâță și care n-au tras*Num. 19:2. la jug; înjugați vacile la car și mânați înapoi acasă vițeii lor care se țin după ele. 8 Să luați chivotul Domnului și să-l puneți în car; să puneți alături de el, într-o ladă, lucrurile de aur*Vers. 4,5. pe care le dați Domnului ca dar pentru vină, apoi să-l trimiteți, și va pleca. 9 Să-l urmăriți cu privirea și, dacă se va sui pe drumul hotarului său spre Bet-Șemeș*Ios. 15:10., Domnul ne-a făcut acest mare rău; dacă nu, vom ști*Vers. 3. că nu mâna Lui ne-a lovit, ci lucrul acesta a venit peste noi din întâmplare." 10 Oamenii au făcut așa. Au luat două vaci care alăptau, le-au înjugat la car și le-au închis vițeii acasă. 11 Au pus în car chivotul Domnului și lada cu șoarecii de aur și chipurile umflăturilor lor. 12 Vacile au apucat drept pe drumul spre Bet-Șemeș; au ținut mereu același drum, mugind, și nu s-au abătut nici la dreapta, nici la stânga. Domnitorii filistenilor au mers după ele până la hotarul Bet-Șemeșului.

13 Locuitorii din Bet-Șemeș secerau grânele în vale: au ridicat ochii, au zărit chivotul și s-au bucurat când l-au văzut. 14 Carul a ajuns în câmpul lui Iosua din Bet-Șemeș și s-a oprit acolo. Acolo era o piatră mare. Au despicat lemnele carului, și vacile le-au adus ca ardere-de-tot Domnului. 15 Leviții au coborât chivotul Domnului și lada de lângă el, în care se aflau lucrurile de aur, și le-au pus pe toate pe piatra cea mare. Oamenii din Bet-Șemeș au adus Domnului în ziua aceea arderi-de-tot și jertfe. 16 Cei cinci*Ios. 13:3. domnitori ai filistenilor, după ce au văzut lucrul acesta, s-au întors la Ecron în aceeași zi. 17 Iată*Vers. 4. umflăturile de aur pe care le-au dat Domnului filistenii ca dar pentru vină: una pentru Asdod, una pentru Gaza, una pentru Ascalon, una pentru Gat, una pentru Ecron. 18 Erau și niște șoareci de aur, după numărul tuturor cetăților filistenilor, care erau ale celor cinci căpetenii, atât cetăți întărite, cât și cetăți fără ziduri. Lucrul acesta îl adeverește piatra cea mare pe care au pus chivotul Domnului și care este și astăzi în câmpul lui Iosua din Bet-Șemeș. 19 Domnul a lovit*Exod 19:21.Num. 4:5,15,20.2 Sam. 6:7. pe oamenii din Bet-Șemeș când s-au uitat în chivotul Domnului; a lovit (cincizeci de mii) șaptezeci de oameni din popor. Și poporul a plâns, pentru că Domnul îl lovise cu o mare urgie. 20 Oamenii din Bet-Șemeș au zis: „Cine poate*2 Sam. 6:9.Mal. 3:2. sta înaintea Domnului, înaintea acestui Dumnezeu sfânt? Și la cine trebuie să se suie chivotul, dacă se depărtează de la noi?" 21 Au trimis soli la locuitorii din Chiriat-Iearim*Ios. 18:14.Jud. 18:12.1 Cron. 13:5,6. ca să le spună: „Filistenii au adus înapoi chivotul Domnului; coborâți-vă și suiți-l la voi."
