1 And the boy Samuel ministered to Jehovah before Eli. And the word of Jehovah was rare in those days; a vision was not frequent. 2 And it came to pass at that time, when Eli lay in his place (now his eyes began to grow dim, he could not see), 3 and the lamp of God*GodHebrew: Elohim had not yet gone out, and Samuel lay in the temple of Jehovah, where the ark of God*GodHebrew: Elohim was, 4 that Jehovah called to Samuel. And he said, Here am I. 5 And he ran to Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou calledst me. And he said, I did not call: lie down again. And he went and lay down. 6 And Jehovah called again, Samuel! And Samuel arose and went to Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou calledst me. And he said, I did not call, my son: lie down again. 7 Now Samuel did not yet know Jehovah, neither had the word of Jehovah yet been revealed to him. 8 And Jehovah called again the third time, Samuel! And he arose and went to Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou calledst me. And Eli perceived that Jehovah was calling the boy. 9 And Eli said to Samuel, Go, lie down; and it shall be, if he call thee, that thou shalt say, Speak, Jehovah, for thy servant heareth. So Samuel went and lay down in his place. 10 And Jehovah came, and stood, and called as at the other times, Samuel, Samuel! And Samuel said, Speak, for thy servant heareth.

11 And Jehovah said to Samuel, Behold, I do a thing in Israel, at which both the ears of every one that heareth it shall tingle. 12 In that day I will perform against Eli all that I have spoken concerning his house; I will begin and make an end. 13 For I have declared to him that I will judge his house for ever, for the iniquity which he hath known: because his sons made themselves vile, and he restrained them not. 14 And therefore I have sworn unto the house of Eli that the iniquity of Eli’s house shall not be expiated with sacrifice or oblation for ever. 15 And Samuel lay until the morning, and opened the doors of the house of Jehovah. And Samuel feared to declare the vision to Eli. 16 And Eli called Samuel, and said, Samuel, my son. And he said, Here am I. 17 And he said, What is the word that he has spoken to thee? I pray thee, keep it not back from me: God*GodHebrew: Elohim do so to thee, and more also, if thou keep back anything from me of all the word that he spoke to thee. 18 And Samuel told him all the words, and kept nothing back from him. And he said, It is Jehovah: let him do what is good in his sight.

19 And Samuel grew, and Jehovah was with him, and let none of his words fall to the ground. 20 And all Israel, from Dan even to Beer-sheba, knew that Samuel was established a prophet of Jehovah. 21 And Jehovah appeared again at Shiloh; for Jehovah revealed himself to Samuel at Shiloh by the word of Jehovah.

Domnului era rar în vremea aceea și vedeniile nu erau dese. 2 Tot pe vremea aceea, Eli începea să aibă ochii tulburi*Gen. 27:1;48:10. Cap. 2:22;4:15. și nu mai putea să vadă. El stătea culcat la locul lui, 3 iar candela*Exod 27:21.Lev. 24:3.2 Cron. 13:11. lui Dumnezeu nu se stinsese încă și Samuel era culcat în Templul*Cap. 1:9. Domnului, unde era chivotul lui Dumnezeu. 4 Atunci, Domnul a chemat pe Samuel. El a răspuns: „Iată-mă!" 5 Și a alergat la Eli și a zis: „Iată-mă, căci m-ai chemat." Eli a răspuns: „Nu te-am chemat; întoarce-te și te culcă." Și s-a dus și s-a culcat. 6 Domnul a chemat din nou pe Samuel. Și Samuel s-a sculat, s-a dus la Eli și a zis: „Iată-mă, căci m-ai chemat." Eli a răspuns: „Nu te-am chemat, fiule, întoarce-te și te culcă." 7 Samuel nu cunoștea*Fapte 19:2. încă pe Domnul și Cuvântul Domnului nu-i fusese încă descoperit. 8 Domnul a chemat din nou pe Samuel, pentru a treia oară. Și Samuel s-a sculat, s-a dus la Eli și a zis: „Iată-mă, căci m-ai chemat." Eli a înțeles că Domnul cheamă pe copil 9 și a zis lui Samuel: „Du-te de te culcă și, dacă vei mai fi chemat, să spui: ‘Vorbește, Doamne, căci robul Tău ascultă.’" Și Samuel s-a dus să se culce la locul lui. 10 Domnul a venit, S-a înfățișat și l-a chemat ca și în celelalte dăți: „Samuele, Samuele!" Și Samuel a răspuns: „Vorbește, căci robul Tău ascultă." 11 Atunci, Domnul a zis lui Samuel: „Iată că voi face în Israel un lucru care va asurzi*2 Împ. 21:12.Ier. 19:3. urechile oricui îl va auzi. 12 În ziua aceea voi împlini asupra lui Eli tot*Cap. 2:30-36. ce am rostit împotriva casei lui; voi începe și voi isprăvi. 13 I-am*Cap. 2:29-31. spus că vreau să pedepsesc*Ezec. 7:3;18:30. casa lui pentru totdeauna, din pricina fărădelegii de care are cunoștință și prin care fiii lui*Cap. 2:12,17,22. s-au făcut vrednici de lepădat, fără*Cap. 2:23,25. ca el să-i fi oprit. 14 De aceea, jur casei lui Eli că niciodată fărădelegea casei lui Eli nu*Num. 15:30,31.Is. 22:14. va fi ispășită, nici prin jertfe, nici prin daruri de mâncare." 15 Samuel a rămas culcat până dimineața, apoi a deschis ușile Casei Domnului. Samuel s-a temut să istorisească lui Eli vedenia aceea. 16 Dar Eli a chemat pe Samuel și a zis: „Samuele, fiule!" El a răspuns: „Iată-mă!" 17 Și Eli a zis: „Care este cuvântul pe care ți l-a vorbit Domnul? Nu-mi ascunde nimic. Dumnezeu să Se poarte*Rut 1:17. cu tine cu toată asprimea dacă-mi ascunzi ceva din tot ce ți-a spus!" 18 Samuel i-a istorisit tot, fără să-i ascundă nimic. Și Eli a zis: „Domnul*Iov 1:21;2:10.Ps. 39:9.Is. 39:8. este Acesta, să facă ce va crede!" 19 Samuel creștea*Cap. 2:21., Domnul*Gen. 39:2,21,23. era cu el și n-a lăsat să cadă la pământ niciunul*Cap. 9:6. din cuvintele sale. 20 Tot Israelul, de la Dan*Jud. 20:1. până la Beer-Șeba, a cunoscut că Domnul pusese pe Samuel proroc al Domnului. 21 Domnul nu înceta să Se arate în Silo, căci Domnul Se descoperea lui Samuel, în Silo, prin Cuvântul*Vers. 1,4. Domnului.
