1 And the Philistines assembled their armies to battle, and were gathered together at Sochoh, which belongs to Judah, and encamped between Sochoh and Azekah, in Ephesdammim. 2 And Saul and the men of Israel were gathered together, and encamped in the valley of terebinths, and set the battle in array against the Philistines. 3 And the Philistines stood on the mountain on the one side, and Israel stood on the mountain on the other side; and the ravine was between them. 4 And there went out a champion from the camp of the Philistines, named Goliath, of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span. 5 And he had a helmet of bronze upon his head, and he was clothed with a corselet of scales; and the weight of the corselet was five thousand shekels of bronze. 6 And he had greaves of bronze upon his legs, and a javelin of bronze between his shoulders. 7 And the shaft of his spear was like a weaver’s beam; and his spear’s head weighed six hundred shekels of iron; and the shield-bearer went before him. 8 And he stood and cried to the ranks of Israel, and said to them, Why are ye come out to set your battle in array? am not I the Philistine, and ye servants of Saul? choose for yourselves a man, and let him come down to me. 9 If he be able to fight with me, and to smite me, then will we be your servants; but if I overcome and smite him, then shall ye be our servants and serve us. 10 And the Philistine said, I have defied the ranks of Israel this day; give me a man, that we may fight together. 11 And Saul and all Israel heard these words of the Philistine, and they were dismayed and greatly afraid.

12 Now David was the son of that Ephrathite of Bethlehem-Judah whose name was Jesse; and he had eight sons; and the man was old in the days of Saul, advanced in years among men. 13 And the three eldest of the sons of Jesse had gone and followed Saul to the battle; and the names of his three sons that went to the battle were Eliab the firstborn, and the second to him Abinadab, and the third Shammah. 14 And David was the youngest; and the three eldest had followed Saul. 15 But David went and returned from Saul to feed his father’s sheep at Bethlehem. 16 And the Philistine drew near morning and evening, and presented himself forty days. 17 And Jesse said to David his son, Take, I pray, for thy brethren, this ephah of parched corn and these ten loaves, and carry them quickly to the camp to thy brethren; 18 and carry these ten cheeses to the captain of the thousand, and visit thy brethren to see how they are, and take a pledge of them. 19 Now Saul, and they, and all the men of Israel were in the valley of terebinths, fighting against the Philistines. 20 And David rose up early in the morning, and left the sheep with a keeper, and took his charge and went, as Jesse had commanded him. And he came to the wagon-defence; and the host which was going forth to the battle-array shouted for the fight. 21 And Israel and the Philistines put the battle in array, rank against rank. 22 And David left the things he was carrying in the hand of the keeper of the baggage, and ran into the ranks, and came and saluted his brethren. 23 And as he talked with them, behold there came up the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, out of the ranks of the Philistines, and spoke according to the same words; and David heard them. 24 And all the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him and were greatly afraid. 25 And the men of Israel said, Have ye seen this man that comes up? for to defy Israel is he come up: and it shall be, that the man who smites him, him will the king enrich with great riches, and will give him his daughter, and make his father’s house free in Israel. 26 And David spoke to the men that stood by him, saying, What shall be done to the man that smites this Philistine, and takes away the reproach from Israel? for who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God*GodHebrew: Elohim27 And the people told him after this manner, saying, So shall it be done to the man that smites him. 28 And Eliab, his eldest brother, heard while he spoke to the men; and Eliab’s anger was kindled against David, and he said, Why art thou come down? and with whom hast thou left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know thy pride and the naughtiness of thy heart; for thou art come down that thou mightest see the battle. 29 And David said, What have I now done? Was it not laid upon me? 30 And he turned from him to another, and spoke after the same manner; and the people answered him again after the former manner.

31 And the words were heard which David spoke, and they rehearsed them before Saul; and he sent for him. 32 And David said to Saul, Let no man’s heart fail because of him: thy servant will go and fight with this Philistine. 33 And Saul said to David, Thou art not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him; for thou art but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth. 34 And David said to Saul, Thy servant fed his father’s sheep, and there came a lion, and also a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock. 35 And I went after him, and smote him, and delivered it out of his mouth; and when he arose against me, I seized him by his beard, and smote him, and slew him. 36 Thy servant smote both the lion and the bear; and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, because he has defied the armies of the living God*GodHebrew: Elohim37 And David said, Jehovah who delivered me out of the paw of the lion and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said to David, Go, and Jehovah be with thee. 38 And Saul clothed David with his dress, and put a helmet of bronze upon his head, and clothed him with a corselet. 39 And David girded his sword upon his dress, and endeavoured to go; for he had not yet tried it. And David said to Saul, I cannot go in these; for I have never tried them. And David put them off him.

40 And he took his staff in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in the shepherd’s bag that he had, into the pocket; and his sling was in his hand. And he drew near to the Philistine. 41 And the Philistine came on and approached David; and the man that bore the shield was before him. 42 And when the Philistine looked about and saw David, he disdained him; for he was a youth, and ruddy, and besides of a beautiful countenance. 43 And the Philistine said to David, Am I a dog, that thou comest to me with staves? And the Philistine cursed David by his gods. 44 And the Philistine said to David, Come to me, and I will give thy flesh to the fowls of the heavens and to the beasts of the field. 45 And David said to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with sword, and with spear, and with javelin; but I come to thee in the name of Jehovah of hosts, the God*GodHebrew: Elohim of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied. 46 This day will Jehovah deliver thee up into my hand; and I will smite thee, and take thy head from thee; and I will give the carcases of the camp of the Philistines this day to the fowl of the heavens and to the wild beasts of the earth. And all the earth shall know that Israel has a God*GodHebrew: Elohim47 and all this congregation shall know that Jehovah saves not with sword and spear; for the battle is Jehovah’s, and he will give you into our hands.

48 And it came to pass, when the Philistine arose, and came and advanced to meet David, that David hasted, and ran towards the ranks to meet the Philistine. 49 And David put his hand into the bag, and took thence a stone, and slang it, and smote the Philistine in his forehead, and the stone sank into his forehead; and he fell on his face to the earth. 50 So David overcame the Philistine with a sling and a stone, and smote the Philistine and killed him; and there was no sword in the hand of David. 51 And David ran, and stood upon the Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of its sheath, and killed him completely, and cut off his head with it. And when the Philistines saw that their hero was dead, they fled. 52 And the men of Israel and of Judah arose, and shouted, and pursued the Philistines, until thou comest to the ravine and to the gates of Ekron. And the wounded of the Philistines fell down on the way to Shaaraim, even to Gath, and to Ekron. 53 And the children of Israel returned from chasing after the Philistines, and they pillaged their camps. 54 And David took the head of the Philistine and brought it to Jerusalem; but he put his armour in his tent. 55 And when Saul saw David go forth against the Philistine, he said to Abner, the captain of the host, Abner, whose son is this young man? And Abner said, As thy soul liveth, O king, I cannot tell. 56 And the king said, Inquire thou whose son this youth is. 57 And as David returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, Abner took him, and brought him before Saul with the head of the Philistine in his hand. 58 And Saul said to him, Whose son art thou, young man? And David said, I am the son of thy servant Jesse the Beth-lehemite.

1 Filistenii și-au strâns*Cap. 13:5. oștile ca să facă război și s-au adunat la Soco, o cetate a lui Iuda; au tăbărât între Soco*Ios. 15:35.2 Cron. 28:18. și Azeca, la Efes-Damim. 2 Saul și bărbații lui Israel s-au strâns și ei; au tăbărât în Valea Terebinților și s-au așezat în linie de bătaie împotriva filistenilor. 3 Filistenii se așezaseră pe un munte deoparte, și Israel, pe un munte de cealaltă parte: doar valea îi despărțea. 4 Atunci a ieșit un om din tabăra filistenilor și a înaintat între cele două oștiri. El se numea Goliat*2 Sam. 21:19., era din*Ios. 11:22. Gat și avea o înălțime de șase coți și o palmă. 5 Pe cap avea un coif de aramă și purta niște zale de solzi în greutate de cinci mii de sicli de aramă. 6 Avea niște tureci de aramă peste fluierele picioarelor și o pavăză de aramă între umeri. 7 Coada*2 Sam. 21:19. suliței lui era ca un sul de țesut și fierul suliței cântărea șase sute de sicli de fier. Cel ce-i purta scutul mergea înaintea lui. 8 Filisteanul s-a oprit și, vorbind oștilor lui Israel așezate în șiruri de bătaie, le-a strigat: „Pentru ce ieșiți să vă așezați în șiruri de bătaie? Nu sunt eu filistean și nu sunteți voi slujitorii*Cap. 8:17. lui Saul? Alegeți un om care să se coboare împotriva mea! 9 Dacă va putea să se bată cu mine și să mă omoare, noi vom fi robii voștri, dar, dacă-l voi birui și-l voi omorî eu, voi ne veți fi robi nouă și ne veți*Cap. 11:1. sluji." 10 Filisteanul a mai zis: „Arunc astăzi o ocară*Vers. 26.2 Sam. 21:21. asupra oștirii lui Israel! Dați-mi un om ca să mă lupt cu el." 11 Saul și tot Israelul au auzit aceste cuvinte ale filisteanului și s-au înspăimântat, și au fost cuprinși de o mare frică.

12 Și David era fiul*Vers. 58.Rut 4:22. Cap. 16:1,18. efratitului*Gen. 35:19. aceluia din Betleemul lui Iuda numit Isai, care avea opt*Cap. 16:10,11.1 Cron. 2:13-15. fii. Pe vremea lui Saul, el era bătrân, înaintat în vârstă. 13 Cei trei fii mai mari ai lui Isai urmaseră pe Saul la război; întâiul născut din cei trei fii ai lui care porniseră la război se numea*Cap. 16:6,8,9.1 Cron. 2:13. Eliab, al doilea Abinadab și al treilea Șama. 14 David era cel mai tânăr. Și, când cei trei mai mari au urmat pe Saul, 15 David a plecat de la Saul și s-a întors la Betleem ca să pască*Cap. 16:19. oile tatălui său. 16 Filisteanul înainta dimineața și seara și s-a înfățișat astfel timp de patruzeci de zile. 17 Isai a zis fiului său David: „Ia pentru frații tăi efa aceasta de grâu prăjit și aceste zece pâini și aleargă în tabără, la frații tăi; 18 du și aceste zece cașuri de brânză căpeteniei care este peste mia lor. Să vezi dacă frații tăi sunt bine*Gen. 37:14. și să-mi aduci vești temeinice. 19 Ei sunt cu Saul și cu toți bărbații lui Israel în Valea Terebinților, în război cu filistenii." 20 David s-a sculat dis-de-dimineață. A lăsat oile în seama unui paznic, și-a luat lucrurile și a plecat, cum îi poruncise Isai. Când a ajuns în tabără, oștirea pornise să se așeze în șiruri de bătaie și scotea strigăte de război. 21 Israel și filistenii s-au așezat în șiruri de bătaie, oștire către oștire. 22 David a dat lucrurile pe care le avea în mâinile celui ce păzea calabalâcurile și a alergat la șirurile de bătaie. Cum a ajuns, a întrebat pe frații săi de sănătate. 23 Pe când vorbea cu ei, iată că filisteanul din Gat, numit Goliat, a înaintat între cele două oștiri, ieșind afară din șirurile filistenilor. A rostit aceleași cuvinte*Vers. 8. ca mai înainte, și David le-a auzit. 24 La vederea acestui om, toți cei din Israel au fugit dinaintea lui și i-a apucat o mare frică. 25 Fiecare zicea: „Ați văzut pe omul acesta înaintând? A înaintat ca să arunce ocara asupra lui Israel! Dacă-l va omorî cineva, împăratul îl va umple de bogății, îi va da de nevastă*Ios. 15:16. pe fiică-sa și va scuti de dări casa tatălui său în Israel." 26 David a zis oamenilor de lângă el: „Ce se va face aceluia care va omorî pe filisteanul acesta și va lua ocara*Cap. 11:2. de asupra lui Israel? Cine este filisteanul acesta, acest netăiat împrejur*Cap. 14:6., ca să ocărască*Vers. 10. oștirea*Deut. 5:26. Dumnezeului celui viu?" 27 Poporul, spunând din nou aceleași lucruri, i-a zis: „Așa*Vers. 25. și așa se va face aceluia care-l va omorî." 28 Eliab, fratele lui cel mai mare, care-l auzise vorbind cu oamenii aceștia, s-a aprins*Gen. 37:4,8,11.Mat. 10:36. de mânie împotriva lui David. Și a zis: „Pentru ce te-ai coborât tu și cui ai lăsat acele puține oi în pustie? Îți cunosc eu mândria și răutatea inimii. Te-ai coborât ca să vezi lupta." 29 David a răspuns: „Ce-am făcut oare? Nu pot să vorbesc*Vers. 17. astfel?" 30 Și s-a întors de la el ca să vorbească cu altul și i-a pus aceleași*Vers. 26,27. întrebări. Poporul i-a răspuns ca și întâiași dată. 31 Când s-au auzit cuvintele rostite de David, au fost spuse înaintea lui Saul, care a trimis să-l caute. 32 David a zis lui Saul: „Nimeni*Deut. 20:1,3. să nu-și piardă nădejdea din pricina filisteanului acestuia! Robul*Cap. 16:18. tău va merge să se bată cu el." 33 Saul a zis lui David: „Nu poți*Num. 13:31.Deut. 9:2. să te duci să te bați cu filisteanul acesta, căci tu ești un copil, și el este un om războinic din tinerețea lui." 34 David a zis lui Saul: „Robul tău păștea oile tatălui său. Și, când un leu sau un urs venea să-mi ia o oaie din turmă, 35 alergam după el, îl loveam și-i smulgeam oaia din gură. Dacă se ridica împotriva mea, îl apucam de falcă, îl loveam și-l omoram. 36 Așa a doborât robul tău leul și ursul, și cu filisteanul acesta, cu acest netăiat împrejur, va fi ca și cu unul din ei, căci a ocărât oștirea Dumnezeului celui viu." 37 David a mai zis: „Domnul*Ps. 18:16,17;63:7;77:11.2 Cor. 1:10.2 Tim. 4:17,18., care m-a izbăvit din gheara leului și din laba ursului, mă va izbăvi și din mâna acestui filistean." Și Saul a zis lui David: „Du-te și Domnul*Cap. 20:13.1 Cron. 22:11,16. să fie cu tine!" 38 Saul a îmbrăcat pe David cu hainele lui, i-a pus pe cap un coif de aramă și l-a îmbrăcat cu o platoșă. 39 David a încins sabia lui Saul peste hainele lui și a vrut să meargă, căci nu încercase încă să meargă cu ele. Apoi a zis lui Saul: „Nu pot să merg cu armătura aceasta, căci nu sunt obișnuit cu ea." Și s-a dezbrăcat de ea. 40 Și-a luat toiagul în mână, și-a ales din pârâu cinci pietre netede și le-a pus în traista lui de păstor și în buzunarul hainei. Apoi, cu praștia în mână, a înaintat împotriva filisteanului. 41 Filisteanul s-a apropiat puțin câte puțin de David și omul care-i ducea scutul mergea înaintea lui. 42 Filisteanul s-a uitat și, când a zărit pe David, a râs*Ps. 123:3,4.1 Cor. 1:27,28. de el, căci nu vedea în el decât un copil cu păr bălai*Cap. 16:12. și cu fața frumoasă. 43 Filisteanul a zis lui David: „Ce, sunt câine*Cap. 24:14.2 Sam. 3:8;9:8;16:9.2 Împ. 8:13., de vii la mine cu toiege?" Și, după ce l-a blestemat pe dumnezeii lui, 44 a adăugat*1 Împ. 20:10,11.: „Vino la mine și voi da carnea ta păsărilor cerului și fiarelor câmpului." 45 David a zis filisteanului: „Tu vii împotriva mea cu sabie, cu suliță și cu pavăză, iar*2 Sam. 22:33,35.Ps. 124:8;125:1.2 Cor. 10:4.Evr. 11:33,34. eu vin împotriva ta în Numele Domnului oștirilor, în Numele Dumnezeului oștirii lui Israel, pe care ai*Vers. 10. ocărât-o. 46 Astăzi, Domnul te va da în mâinile mele, te voi doborî și-ți voi tăia capul; astăzi voi da stârvurile*Deut. 28:26. taberei filistenilor păsărilor cerului și fiarelor pământului. Și tot pământul va ști*Ios. 4:24.1 Împ. 8:43;18:36.2 Împ. 19:19.Is. 52:10. că Israel are un Dumnezeu. 47 Și toată mulțimea aceasta va ști că Domnul nu mântuiește nici prin sabie*Ps. 44:6,7.Osea 1:7.Zah. 4:6., nici prin suliță. Căci biruința este*2 Cron. 20:15. a Domnului. Și El vă dă în mâinile noastre." 48 Îndată ce filisteanul a pornit să meargă înaintea lui David, David a alergat pe câmpul de bătaie înaintea filisteanului. 49 Și-a vârât mâna în traistă, a luat o piatră și a aruncat-o cu praștia; a lovit pe filistean în frunte și piatra a intrat în fruntea filisteanului, care a căzut cu fața la pământ. 50 Astfel, cu o praștie și cu o piatră, David a fost mai*Cap. 21:9.Jud. 3:31;15:15.2 Sam. 23:21. tare decât filisteanul; l-a trântit la pământ și l-a omorât, fără să aibă sabie în mână. 51 A alergat, s-a oprit lângă filistean, i-a luat sabia, pe care i-a scos-o din teacă, l-a omorât și i-a tăiat capul. Filistenii, când au văzut că uriașul lor a murit, au luat-o la*Evr. 11:34. fugă. 52 Și bărbații lui Israel și Iuda au dat chiote și au pornit în urmărirea filistenilor până în vale și până la porțile Ecronului. Filistenii, răniți de moarte, au căzut pe drumul care duce la Șaaraim*Ios. 15:36., până la Gat și până la Ecron. 53 Și copiii lui Israel s-au întors de la urmărirea filistenilor și le-au jefuit tabăra. 54 David a luat capul filisteanului și l-a dus la Ierusalim și a pus armele filisteanului în cortul său. 55 Când a văzut Saul pe David mergând împotriva filisteanului, a zis lui Abner, căpetenia oștirii: „Al cui*Cap. 16:21,22. fiu este tânărul acesta, Abner?" Abner a răspuns: „Pe sufletul tău, împărate, că nu știu." 56 „Întreabă dar al cui fiu este tânărul acesta", a zis împăratul. 57 Și, când s-a întors David după ce omorâse pe filistean, Abner l-a luat și l-a adus înaintea lui Saul. David avea în mână capul*Vers. 54. filisteanului. 58 Saul i-a zis: „Al cui fiu ești, tinere?" Și David a răspuns: „Sunt fiul robului*Vers. 12. tău Isai, Betleemitul."
