1 And the word of Jehovah came unto Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, 2 Arise, go to Nineveh, the great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is come up before me. 3 But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of Jehovah; and he went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto Tarshish, from the presence of Jehovah.

4 But Jehovah sent out a great wind upon the sea, and there was a mighty tempest upon the sea, so that the ship was like to be broken. 5 And the mariners were afraid, and cried every one unto his god; and they cast forth the wares that were in the ship into the sea, to be lightened of them. But Jonah had gone down into the lower part of the ship; and he lay, and was fast asleep. 6 And the shipmaster came to him, and said unto him, What meanest thou, sleeper? arise, call upon thy God*GodHebrew: Elohim perhaps God*GodHebrew: Elohim will think upon us, that we perish not. 7 And they said each one to his fellow, Come, and let us cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this evil is upon us. And they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah. 8 And they said unto him, Tell us, we pray thee, for whose cause this evil is upon us: what is thine occupation? and whence comest thou? what is thy country? and of what people art thou? 9 And he said unto them, I am a Hebrew, and I fear Jehovah, the God*GodHebrew: Elohim of the heavens, who hath made the sea and the dry land. 10 Then were the men exceedingly afraid, and said unto him, What is this thou hast done? For the men knew that he fled from the presence of Jehovah: for he had told them.

11 And they said unto him, What shall we do unto thee, that the sea may be calm unto us? for the sea grew more and more tempestuous. 12 And he said unto them, Take me up, and cast me forth into the sea; so shall the sea be calm unto you: for I know that because of me this great tempest is upon you. 13 But the men rowed hard to regain the land; but they could not; for the sea grew more and more tempestuous against them. 14 And they cried unto Jehovah and said, Ah, Jehovah, we beseech thee, let us not perish for this man’s life, and lay not upon us innocent blood: for thou, Jehovah, hast done as it pleased thee. 15 And they took up Jonah, and cast him forth into the sea: and the sea ceased from its raging. 16 And the men feared Jehovah exceedingly, and offered a sacrifice unto Jehovah, and made vows. 17 And Jehovah prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

Căci răutatea*Gen. 18:20,21.Ezra 9:6.Iac. 5:4.Apoc. 18:5. ei s-a suit până la Mine!" 3 Și Iona s-a sculat*Cap. 4:2. să fugă la Tars, departe de Fața Domnului. S-a coborât la Iafo*Ios. 19:46.2 Cron. 2:16.Fapte 9:36. și a găsit acolo o corabie care mergea la Tars. A plătit prețul călătoriei și s-a suit în corabie ca să meargă împreună cu călătorii la Tars, departe*Gen. 4:16.Iov 1:12;2:7. de Fața Domnului. 4 Dar Domnul*Ps. 107:25. a făcut să sufle pe mare un vânt năprasnic și a stârnit o mare furtună. Corabia amenința să se sfărâme. 5 Corăbierii s-au temut, a strigat fiecare la dumnezeul lui și au aruncat*Fapte 27:18,19,38. în mare uneltele din corabie, ca s-o facă mai ușoară. Iona s-a coborât în fundul*1 Sam. 24:3. corabiei, s-a culcat și a adormit dus. 6 Cârmaciul s-a apropiat de el și i-a zis: „Ce dormi? Scoală-te și cheamă*Ps. 107:28. pe Dumnezeul tău! Poate că*Ioel 2:14. Dumnezeu va voi să se gândească la noi, și nu vom pieri!" 7 Și au zis unul către altul: „Veniți să tragem la sorți*Ios. 7:14,16.1 Sam. 10:20,21;14:41,42.Prov. 16:33.Fapte 1:26., ca să știm din pricina cui a venit peste noi nenorocirea aceasta!" Au tras la sorți, și sorțul a căzut pe Iona. 8 Atunci, ei i-au zis: „Spune-ne*Ios. 7:19.1 Sam. 14:43. din pricina cui a venit peste noi nenorocirea aceasta? Ce meserie ai și de unde vii? Care îți este țara și din ce popor ești?" 9 El le-a răspuns: „Sunt evreu și mă tem de Domnul Dumnezeul cerurilor, care*Ps. 146:6.Fapte 17:24. a făcut marea și uscatul!" 10 Oamenii aceia au avut o mare teamă și i-au zis: „Pentru ce ai făcut lucrul acesta?" Căci oamenii aceia știau că fugea de Fața Domnului, pentru că le spusese el. 11 Ei i-au zis: „Ce să-ți facem ca să se potolească marea față de noi?" Căci marea era din ce în ce mai înfuriată. 12 El le-a răspuns: „Luați-mă*Ioan 11:50. și aruncați-mă în mare, și marea se va liniști față de voi! Căci știu că din vina mea vine peste voi această mare furtună!" 13 Oamenii aceștia vâsleau ca să ajungă la uscat, dar nu puteau*Prov. 21:30., pentru că marea se întărâta tot mai mult împotriva lor. 14 Atunci au strigat către Domnul și au zis: „Doamne, nu ne pierde din pricina vieții omului acestuia și nu ne împovăra*Deut. 21:8. cu sânge nevinovat! Căci Tu, Doamne, faci*Ps. 115:3. ce vrei!" 15 Apoi au luat pe Iona și l-au aruncat în mare. Și furia mării*Ps. 89:9.Luca 8:24. s-a potolit. 16 Pe oamenii aceia i-a apucat o mare frică*Marcu 4:41.Fapte 5:11. de Domnul și au adus Domnului o jertfă și I-au făcut juruințe. 17 Domnul a trimis un pește mare să înghită pe Iona și*Mat. 12:40;16:4.Luca 11:30. Iona a stat în pântecele peștelui trei zile și trei nopți.
