1 And it came to pass, when David and his men came to Ziklag on the third day, that the Amalekites had made a raid upon the south, and upon Ziklag, and smitten Ziklag and burned it with fire; 2 and had taken the women captives that were in it; both great and small: they had put none to death, but had carried them off, and went on their way. 3 And David and his men came to the city, and behold, it was burnt with fire; and their wives, and their sons, and their daughters were taken captives. 4 Then David and the people that were with him lifted up their voice and wept, until they had no more power to weep. 5 And David’s two wives were taken captives, Ahinoam the Jizreelitess, and Abigail the wife of Nabal the Carmelite. 6 And David was greatly distressed; for the people spoke of stoning him; for the soul of all the people was embittered, every man because of his sons and because of his daughters; but David strengthened himself in Jehovah his God*GodHebrew: Elohim

7 And David said to Abiathar the priest, Ahimelech’s son, Bring near to me, I pray thee, the ephod. And Abiathar brought the ephod near to David. 8 And David inquired of Jehovah, saying, Shall I pursue after this troop? shall I overtake them? And he said to him, Pursue; for thou shalt assuredly overtake them and shalt certainly recover. 9 So David went, he and the six hundred men that were with him, and they came to the torrent Besor; and those that were left stayed behind. 10 And David pursued, he and four hundred men; for two hundred stayed behind, who were too exhausted to go over the torrent Besor. 11 And they found an Egyptian in the field, and brought him to David, and gave him bread, and he ate; and they gave him water to drink, 12 and gave him a piece of fig-cake and two raisin-cakes, and he ate, and his spirit came again to him; for he had eaten no bread, nor drunk any water, for three days and three nights. 13 And David said to him, To whom belongest thou? and whence art thou? And he said, I am a young man of Egypt, servant of an Amalekite; and my master left me, because three days ago I fell sick. 14 We made a raid against the south of the Cherethites, and against what belongs to Judah, and against the south of Caleb; and we burned Ziklag with fire. 15 And David said to him, Canst thou bring me down to this troop? And he said, Swear to me by God*GodHebrew: Elohim that thou wilt neither put me to death nor deliver me up into the hand of my master, and I will bring thee down to this troop. 16 And he brought him down, and behold, they were spread over the whole land, eating and drinking, and dancing, because of all the great spoil that they had taken out of the land of the Philistines, and out of the land of Judah. 17 And David smote them from the twilight even to the evening of the next day; and there escaped not a man of them, save four hundred young men, who rode upon camels, and fled. 18 And David recovered all that the Amalekites had taken: and David recovered his two wives. 19 And there was nothing missed by them, neither small nor great, neither sons nor daughters, neither spoil nor anything that they had taken: David brought all back. 20 And David took all the flocks and the herds, which they drove before the other cattle, and said, This is David’s spoil.

21 And David came to the two hundred men who had been too exhausted to follow David, and whom they had left behind at the torrent Besor; and they went forth to meet David, and to meet the people that were with him; and David drew near to the people and saluted them. 22 And all the wicked men, and men of Belial, of those that had gone with David, answered and said, Because they went not with us, we will not give them aught of the spoil that we have recovered, save to every man his wife and his children, that they may lead them away and depart. 23 Then said David, Ye shall not do so, my brethren, with that which Jehovah has given us, who has preserved us, and given the troop that came against us into our hand. 24 And who will hearken to you in this matter? For as his share is that goes down to the battle, so shall his share be that abides by the baggage: they shall share alike. 25 And it was so from that day forward; and he made it a statute and an ordinance for Israel to this day. 26 And David came to Ziklag, and he sent of the spoil to the elders of Judah, to his friends, saying, Behold a present for you of the spoil of the enemies of Jehovah: 27 to those in Bethel, and to those in south Ramoth, and to those in Jattir, 28 and to those in Aroer, and to those in Siphmoth, and to those in Eshtemoa, 29 and to those in Rachal, and to those in the cities of the Jerahmeelites, and to those in the cities of the Kenites, 30 and to those in Hormah, and to those in Chor-ashan, and to those in Athach, 31 and to those in Hebron, and to all the places where David himself and his men went about.

Ei nimiciseră și arseseră Țiclagul 2 după ce luaseră prinși pe femei și pe toți cei ce se aflau acolo, mici și mari. Nu omorâseră pe nimeni, dar luaseră totul și plecaseră. 3 David și oamenii lui au ajuns în cetate și iată că era arsă; și nevestele, fiii și fiicele lor fuseseră luați prinși. 4 Atunci, David și poporul care era cu el au ridicat glasul și au plâns până n-au mai putut plânge. 5 Cele două*Cap. 25:42,43.2 Sam. 2:2. neveste ale lui David: Ahinoam din Izreel și Abigail din Carmel, nevasta lui Nabal, fuseseră luate și ele. 6 David a fost în mare strâmtorare, căci poporul vorbea*Exod 17:4. să-l ucidă cu pietre, pentru că toți erau amărâți în suflet, fiecare din pricina fiilor și fetelor lui. Dar*Ps. 42:5;56:3,4,11.Hab. 3:17,18. David s-a îmbărbătat, sprijinindu-se pe Domnul Dumnezeul lui. 7 El*Cap. 23:6,9. a zis preotului Abiatar, fiul lui Ahimelec: „Adu-mi efodul!" Abiatar a adus efodul la David. 8 Și David*Cap. 23:2,4. a întrebat pe Domnul: „Să urmăresc oastea aceasta? O voi ajunge?" Domnul i-a răspuns: „Urmărește-o, căci o vei ajunge și vei izbăvi totul." 9 Și David a pornit, el și cei șase sute de oameni care erau cu el. Au ajuns la pârâul Besor, unde s-au oprit cei ce rămâneau la coadă. 10 David i-a urmărit mai departe, cu patru sute de oameni, dar două*Vers. 21. sute de oameni s-au oprit, fiind prea obosiți ca să mai treacă pârâul Besor. 11 Pe câmp, au dat peste un om egiptean, pe care l-au adus la David. I-au dat să mănânce pâine și să bea apă 12 și i-au mai dat și o legătură de smochine și două legături de stafide. După ce a mâncat*Jud. 15:19. Cap. 14:27., i-au venit iarăși puterile, căci nu mâncase și nu băuse apă de trei zile și trei nopți. 13 David i-a zis: „Al cui ești și de unde ești?" El a răspuns: „Sunt un băiat egiptean în slujba unui amalecit și de trei zile stăpânul meu m-a părăsit pentru că eram bolnav. 14 Am năvălit în partea de miazăzi a cheretiților*Vers. 16.2 Sam. 8:18.1 Împ. 1:38,44.Ezec. 25:16.Ţef. 2:5., pe ținutul lui Iuda și la miazăzi de Caleb*Ios. 14:13;15:13., și am ars Țiclagul." 15 David i-a zis: „Vrei să mă duci la oastea aceasta?" Și el a zis: „Jură-mi pe Numele lui Dumnezeu că nu mă vei omorî și nu mă vei da pe mâna stăpânului meu, și te voi coborî la oastea aceasta." 16 El i-a slujit astfel de călăuză. Și amaleciții erau risipiți pe tot ținutul, mâncând*1 Tes. 5:3., bând și jucând de bucuria prăzii celei mari pe care o luaseră din țara filistenilor și din țara lui Iuda. 17 David i-a bătut din zorii zilei până a doua zi seara și n-a scăpat niciunul din ei, afară de patru sute de tineri, care au încălecat pe cămile și au fugit. 18 David a scăpat astfel tot ce luaseră amaleciții și a scăpat și pe cele două neveste ale lui. 19 Nu le-a lipsit nimeni, de la mic până la mare, nici fiu, nici fiică, nici un lucru din pradă, nimic din ce li se luase; David a adus înapoi totul*Vers. 8.. 20 Și David a luat toate oile și toți boii, și cei ce mânau turma aceasta și mergeau în fruntea ei ziceau: „Aceasta este prada lui David!" 21 David a ajuns la cei două*Vers. 10. sute de oameni care fuseseră prea obosiți ca să mai meargă după el și pe care-i lăsase la pârâul Besor. Ei au ieșit înaintea lui David și înaintea poporului care era cu el. David s-a apropiat de ei și i-a întrebat de sănătate. 22 Toți oamenii răi și de*Deut. 13:13.Jud. 19:22. nimic dintre cei ce merseseră cu David au luat cuvântul și au zis: „Fiindcă n-au venit cu noi, să nu le dăm nimic din prada pe care am scăpat-o, ci doar să-și ia fiecare nevasta și copiii și să plece." 23 Dar David a zis: „Să nu faceți așa, fraților, cu ce ne-a dat Domnul, căci El ne-a păzit și a dat în mâinile noastre ceata care venise împotriva noastră. 24 Și cine v-ar asculta în privința aceasta? Partea trebuie să fie aceeași atât*Num. 31:27.Ios. 22:8. pentru cel ce s-a coborât pe câmpul de bătaie, cât și pentru cel ce a rămas la calabalâcuri; s-o împartă deopotrivă." 25 Lucrul acesta a rămas de atunci și până în ziua de azi o lege și un obicei în Israel. 26 Când s-a întors la Țiclag, David a trimis o parte din pradă bătrânilor lui Iuda, prietenilor săi, spunându-le aceste cuvinte: „Iată darul pe care vi-l fac din prada luată de la vrăjmașii Domnului!" 27 A trimis celor din Betel, celor din Ramot*Ios. 19:8., de la miazăzi, celor din Iatir*Ios. 15:48., 28 celor din Aroer*Ios. 13:16., celor din Sifmot, celor din Eștemoa*Ios. 15:50., 29 celor din Racal, celor din cetățile ierahmeeliților*Cap. 27:10., celor din cetățile cheniților*Jud. 1:16., 30 celor din Horma*Jud. 1:17., celor din Cor-Așan, celor din Atac, 31 celor din Hebron*Ios. 14:13.2 Sam. 2:1. și în toate locurile pe care le străbătuse David cu oamenii lui.
