1 Alors tous les Capitaines des gens de guerre, et Johanan fils de Karéah, et Jézania fils de Hosahia, et tout le peuple, depuis le plus petit jusqu’au plus grand, s'approchèrent,

2 Et dirent à Jérémie le Prophète : que notre supplication soit reçue de toi, et fais requête à l'Eternel ton Dieu pour nous, [savoir] pour tout ce reste-ci; car de beaucoup [de monde que nous étions] nous sommes restés peu, comme tes yeux nous voient;

3 Et que l'Eternel ton Dieu nous déclare le chemin par lequel nous aurons à marcher, et ce que nous avons à faire.

4 Et Jérémie le Prophète leur répondit : J'ai entendu [votre demande]; voici, je m'en vais faire requête à l'Eternel votre Dieu selon vos paroles; et il arrivera que je vous déclarerai tout ce que l'Eternel vous répondra, et je ne vous en cacherai pas un mot.

5 Et ils dirent à Jérémie : l'Eternel soit pour témoin véritable et fidèle entre nous, si nous ne faisons selon toutes les paroles, pour lesquelles l'Eternel ton Dieu t'aura envoyé vers nous.

6 Soit bien, soit mal, nous obéirons à la voix de l'Eternel notre Dieu, vers lequel nous t'envoyons; afin qu'il nous arrive du bien quand nous aurons obéi à la voix de l'Eternel notre Dieu.

7 Et il arriva au bout de dix jours que la parole de l'Eternel fut [adressée] à Jérémie.

8 Et il appela Johanan fils de Karéah, et tous les Capitaines des gens de guerre qui étaient avec lui, et tout le peuple, depuis le plus petit jusqu'au plus grand;

9 Et leur dit : Ainsi a dit l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël, vers lequel vous m'avez envoyé pour présenter votre supplication devant lui.

10 Si vous continuez à demeurer dans ce pays, je vous rétablirai, et je ne vous détruirai point; je vous [y] planterai, et je ne vous arracherai point, car je me suis repenti du mal que je vous ai fait.

11 N'ayez point peur du Roi de Babylone, duquel vous avez peur; n'en ayez point peur, dit l'Eternel, car je suis avec vous pour vous sauver, et pour vous délivrer de sa main.

12 Même je vous ferai obtenir miséricorde, tellement qu'il aura pitié de vous, et vous fera retourner en votre pays.

13 Que si vous dites : nous ne demeurerons point en ce pays, et nous n'écouterons point la voix de l'Eternel notre Dieu;

14 En disant : non; mais nous irons au pays d'Egypte, afin que nous ne voyions point de guerre, et que nous n'entendions point le son de la trompette, et que nous n'ayons point disette de pain ; et nous demeurerons là.

15 A cause de cela écoutez maintenant la parole de l'Eternel, [vous] les restes de Juda. Ainsi a dit l'Eternel des armées, le Dieu d'Israël : si vous vous préparez pour aller en Egypte, et que vous y entriez pour y séjourner;

16 Il arrivera que l'épée dont vous avez peur vous attrapera là au pays d'Egypte; et la famine que vous craignez si fort vous suivra en Egypte, tellement que vous y mourrez.

17 Et il arrivera que tous les hommes qui auront fait les démarches nécessaires pour entrer en Egypte afin d'y séjourner, mourront par l'épée, par la famine, et par la mortalité; nul d'eux ne restera, ni échappera de devant le mal que je m'en vais faire venir sur eux.

18 Car ainsi a dit l'Eternel des armées, le Dieu d'Israël : comme ma colère et ma fureur a fondu sur les habitants de Jérusalem, ainsi ma fureur fondra sur vous, quand vous serez entrés en Egypte; et vous serez en exécration, et en étonnement, et en malédiction, et en opprobre; et vous ne verrez plus ce lieu-ci.

19 Vous, les restes de Juda, l'Eternel a parlé contre vous : n'entrez point en Egypte, vous sentirez certainement que je vous en ai sommés aujourd'hui.

20 Car vous avez usé de fraude contre vous-mêmes quand vous m'avez envoyé vers l'Eternel votre Dieu, en me disant : fais requête pour nous envers l'Eternel notre Dieu, et nous déclare tout ce que l'Eternel notre Dieu te dira, et nous [le] ferons.

21 Et je vous [l']ai déclaré aujourd'hui; mais vous n'avez point écouté la voix de l'Eternel votre Dieu, ni rien de tout ce pour quoi il m'a envoyé vers vous.

22 Maintenant donc sachez certainement que vous mourrez par l'épée, par la famine, et par la mortalité, au lieu auquel vous avez désiré d'entrer, pour y séjourner.

1 Then all the captains of the forces, and Johanan the son of Kareah, and Jezaniah the son of Hoshaiah, and all the people from the least even unto the greatest, came near,

2 And said unto Jeremiah the prophet, Let, we beseech you, our supplication be accepted before you, and pray for us unto the LORD your God, even for all this remnant; (for we are left but a few of many, as your eyes do behold us:)

3 That the LORD your God may show us the way in which we may walk, and the thing that we may do.

4 Then Jeremiah the prophet said unto them, I have heard you; behold, I will pray unto the LORD your God according to your words; and it shall come to pass, that whatsoever thing the LORD shall answer you, I will declare it unto you; I will keep nothing back from you.

5 Then they said to Jeremiah, The LORD be a true and faithful witness between us, if we do not even according to all things which the LORD your God shall send by you to us.

6 Whether it be good, or whether it be evil, we will obey the voice of the LORD our God, to whom we send you; that it may be well with us, when we obey the voice of the LORD our God.

7 And it came to pass after ten days, that the word of the LORD came unto Jeremiah.

8 Then called he Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces which were with him, and all the people from the least even to the greatest,

9 And said unto them, Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, unto whom you sent me to present your supplication before him;

10 If you will still abide in this land, then will I build you, and not pull you down, and I will plant you, and not pluck you up: for I relent concerning the disaster that I have brought upon you.

11 Be not afraid of the king of Babylon, of whom you are afraid; be not afraid of him, says the LORD: for I am with you to save you, and to deliver you from his hand.

12 And I will show mercies unto you, that he may have mercy upon you, and cause you to return to your own land.

13 But if you say, We will not dwell in this land, neither obey the voice of the LORD your God,

14 Saying, No; but we will go into the land of Egypt, where we shall see no war, nor hear the sound of the trumpet, nor have hunger of bread; and there will we dwell:

15 And now therefore hear the word of the LORD, you remnant of Judah; Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; If you wholly set your faces to enter into Egypt, and go to sojourn there;

16 Then it shall come to pass, that the sword, which you feared, shall overtake you there in the land of Egypt, and the famine, of which you were afraid, shall follow close after you there in Egypt; and there you shall die.

17 So shall it be with all the men that set their faces to go into Egypt to sojourn there; they shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence: and none of them shall remain or escape from the disaster that I will bring upon them.

18 For thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; As my anger and my fury has been poured forth upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem; so shall my fury be poured forth upon you, when you shall enter into Egypt: and you shall be an oath, and an astonishment, and a curse, and a reproach; and you shall see this place no more.

19 The LORD has said concerning you, O you remnant of Judah; Go you not into Egypt: know certainly that I have admonished you this day.

20 For you were hypocrites in your hearts, when you sent me unto the LORD your God, saying, Pray for us unto the LORD our God; and according unto all that the LORD our God shall say, so declare unto us, and we will do it.

21 And now I have this day declared it to you; but you have not obeyed the voice of the LORD your God, nor any thing for which he has sent me unto you.

22 Now therefore know certainly that you shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence, in the place where you desire to go and to sojourn.
