1 Et l'Eternel me dit : quand Moïse et Samuel se tiendraient devant moi, je n'aurais pourtant point d'affection pour ce peuple; chasse-les de devant ma face, et qu'ils sortent.

2 Que s'ils te disent : où sortirons-nous? Tu leur répondras : ainsi a dit l'Eternel : ceux qui [sont destinés] à la mort [iront] à la mort; et ceux qui [sont destinés] à l’épée [iront] à l’épée; et ceux qui [sont destinés] à la famine, [iront] à la famine; et ceux qui [sont destinés] à la captivité [iront] en captivité.

3 J'établirai aussi sur eux quatre espèces de [punitions], dit l'Eternel, l'épée pour tuer, et les chiens pour traîner, et les oiseaux des cieux, et les bêtes de la terre pour dévorer et pour détruire.

4 Et je les livrerai à être agités par tous les Royaumes de la terre, à cause de Manassé fils d'Ezéchias, Roi de Juda, pour les choses qu'il a faites dans Jérusalem.

5 Car qui serait ému de compassion envers toi, Jérusalem? ou qui viendrait se condouloir avec toi? ou qui se détournerait pour s'enquérir de ta prospérité?

6 Tu m'as abandonné, dit l'Eternel, et tu t'en es allée en arrière; c'est pourquoi j'étendrai ma main sur toi, et je te détruirai; je suis las de me repentir.

7 Je les vannerai avec un van aux portes du pays; j'ai désolé [et] fait périr mon peuple, et ils ne se sont point détournés de leur voie.

8 J'ai multiplié ses veuves plus que le sable de la mer, je leur ai amené sur la mère de leur jeunesse un destructeur en plein midi, j'ai fait tomber subitement sur elle l'ennemi et les frayeurs.

9 Celle qui en avait enfanté sept est devenue languissante, elle a rendu l'esprit, son soleil lui est couché pendant qu'il était encore jour, elle a été rendue honteuse et confuse; et je livrerai son reste à l'épée devant leurs ennemis, dit l'Eternel.

10 Malheur à moi, ô ma mère! de ce que tu m'as enfanté pour être un homme de débat, et un homme de querelle à tout le pays; je ne me suis obligé à personne, et personne ne s'est obligé à moi, et néanmoins chacun me maudit et me méprise.

11 [Alors l'Eternel dit :] ceux qui seront restés de toi ne viendront-ils pas à bien? et ne ferai-je pas que l'ennemi viendra au devant de toi au temps de la calamité, et au temps de la détresse?

12 Le fer usera-t-il le fer de l'Aquilon, et l'acier?

13 Je livrerai au pillage, sans en faire le prix, tes richesses et tes trésors; et cela à cause de tous tes péchés, et même par toutes tes contrées.

14 Et je ferai passer tes ennemis par un pays que tu ne connais point, car le feu a été allumé en ma colère, il sera allumé sur vous.

15 Eternel, tu le connais, souviens-toi de moi, et me visite, et me venge de ceux qui me persécutent; ne m'enlève point, quand tu auras longtemps différé ta colère; connais que j'ai souffert opprobre pour l'amour de toi.

16 Tes paroles se sont-elles trouvées? je les ai [aussitôt] mangées; et ta parole m'a été en joie, et elle a été l'allégresse de mon cœur ; car ton Nom est réclamé sur moi, ô Eternel! Dieu des armées.

17 Je ne me suis point assis au conventicule des railleurs, et je ne m'y suis point réjoui; mais je me suis tenu assis tout seul, à cause de ta main, parce que tu m'as rempli d'indignation.

18 Pourquoi ma douleur est-elle [rendue] continuelle, et ma plaie est-elle sans espérance? elle a refusé d'être guérie; me serais-tu bien comme une chose qui trompe? [comme] des eaux qui ne durent pas?

19 C'est pourquoi ainsi a dit l'Eternel : si tu te retournes, je te ramènerai, et tu te tiendras devant moi; et si tu sépares la chose précieuse de la méprisable, tu seras comme ma bouche; qu'ils se retournent vers toi, mais toi ne retourne pas vers eux.

20 Et je te ferai être à l'égard de ce peuple une muraille d'acier bien forte; ils combattront contre toi, mais ils n'auront point le dessus contre toi, car je [suis] avec toi pour te garantir, et pour te délivrer, dit l'Eternel.

21 Et je te délivrerai de la main des malins, et te rachèterai de la main des terribles.

1 Then said the LORD unto me, Though Moses and Samuel stood before me, yet my mind could not turn toward this people: cast them out of my sight, and let them go forth.

2 And it shall come to pass, if they say unto you, Where shall we go forth? then you shall tell them, Thus says the LORD; Such as are for death, to death; and such as are for the sword, to the sword; and such as are for the famine, to the famine; and such as are for the captivity, to the captivity.

3 And I will appoint over them four kinds, says the LORD: the sword to slay, and the dogs to tear, and the fowls of the heaven, and the beasts of the earth, to devour and destroy.

4 And I will cause them to be removed into all kingdoms of the earth, because of Manasseh the son of Hezekiah king of Judah, for that which he did in Jerusalem.

5 For who shall have pity upon you, O Jerusalem? or who shall bemoan you? or who shall go aside to ask how you do?

6 You have forsaken me, says the LORD, you are gone backward: therefore will I stretch out my hand against you, and destroy you; I am weary of relenting.

7 And I will fan them with a fan in the gates of the land; I will bereave them of children, I will destroy my people, since they return not from their ways.

8 Their widows are increased to me above the sand of the seas: I have brought upon them against the mother of the young men a destroyer at noonday: I have caused him to fall upon it suddenly, and terrors upon the city.

9 She that has borne seven languishes: she has breathed her last; her sun has gone down while it was yet day: she has been ashamed and confounded: and the rest of them will I deliver to the sword before their enemies, says the LORD.

10 Woe is me, my mother, that you have borne me a man of strife and a man of contention to the whole earth! I have neither lent for interest, nor men have lent to me for interest; yet everyone of them does curse me.

11 The LORD said, Verily it shall be well with your remnant; verily I will cause the enemy to treat you well in the time of evil and in the time of affliction.

12 Can anyone break iron, the northern iron and the bronze?

13 Your wealth and your treasures will I give as plunder without price, and that for all your sins, even in all your borders.

14 And I will make you to pass with your enemies into a land which you know not: for a fire is kindled in my anger, which shall burn upon you.

15 O LORD, you know: remember me, and visit me, and avenge me of my persecutors; take me not away in your longsuffering: know that for your sake I have suffered rebuke.

16 Your words were found, and I did eat them; and your word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of my heart: for I am called by your name, O LORD God of hosts.

17 I sat not in the assembly of the mockers, nor rejoiced; I sat alone because of your hand: for you have filled me with indignation.

18 Why is my pain perpetual, and my wound incurable, which refuses to be healed? will you be altogether unto me as a deceitful brook, and as waters that fail?

19 Therefore thus says the LORD, If you return, then will I bring you again, and you shall stand before me: and if you take forth the precious from the vile, you shall be as my mouth: let them return unto you; but return not you unto them.

20 And I will make you unto this people a fortified bronze wall: and they shall fight against you, but they shall not prevail against you: for I am with you to save you and to deliver you, says the LORD.

21 And I will deliver you out of the hand of the wicked, and I will redeem you out of the hand of the terrible.
