1 On dit : si quelqu'un délaisse sa femme, et qu'elle se séparant de lui se joigne à un autre mari, [le premier mari] retournera-t-il encore vers elle? Le pays même n'en serait-il pas entièrement souillé? Or toi, tu t'es prostituée à plusieurs amoureux, toutefois retourne-toi vers moi, dit l'Eternel.
2 Lève tes yeux vers les lieux élevés, et regarde quel est le lieu où tu ne te sois point abandonnée; tu te tenais par les chemins, comme un Arabe au désert; et tu as souillé le pays par tes débauches, et par ta malice.
3 C'est pourquoi les pluies ont été retenues, et il n'y a point eu de pluie de la dernière saison, et tu as un front de femme débauchée; tu n'as point voulu avoir de honte.
4 Ne crieras-tu point désormais vers moi : mon Père, tu es le conducteur de ma jeunesse?
5 Tiendra-t-il [sa colère] à toujours, et me la gardera-t-il à jamais? Voici, tu as [ainsi] parlé, et tu as fait ces maux-là, autant que tu as pu.
6 Aussi l'Eternel me dit aux jours du Roi Josias : n'as-tu point vu ce qu'Israël la revêche a fait? elle s'en est allée sur toute haute montagne, et sous tout arbre vert, et elle s'y est prostituée.
7 Et quand elle a eu fait toutes ces choses, j'ai dit : retourne-toi vers moi; mais elle n'est point retournée; ce que sa sœur Juda la perfide a vu;
8 Et j'ai vu que pour toutes les occasions par lesquelles Israël la revêche avait commis adultère, je l'ai renvoyée, et lui ai donné ses lettres de divorce ; toutefois Juda sa sœur l'infidèle n'a point eu de crainte, mais s'en est allée, et elle aussi s'est prostituée.
9 Et il est arrivé que par la facilité qu'elle a à s'abandonner elle a souillé le pays, et a commis adultère avec la pierre et le bois.
10 Et néanmoins pour tout ceci, Juda sa sœur la perfide n'est point retournée à moi de tout son cœur, mais avec mensonge, dit l'Eternel.
11 L'Eternel donc m'a dit : Israël la revêche s'est montrée plus juste que Juda la perfide.
12 Va donc, et crie ces paroles-ci vers l'Aquilon; et dis : retourne-toi, Israël la revêche, dit l'Eternel; je ne ferai point tomber ma colère sur vous; car je suis miséricordieux, dit l'Eternel, et je ne vous la garderai point à toujours.
13 Mais reconnais ton iniquité; car tu as péché contre l'Eternel ton Dieu, et tu t'es prostituée aux étrangers sous tout arbre vert, et n'as point écouté ma voix, dit l'Eternel.
14 Enfants revêches, convertissez-vous, dit l'Eternel; car j'ai droit de mari sur vous; et je vous prendrai l'un d'une ville, et deux d'une lignée, et je vous ferai entrer en Sion.
15 Et je vous donnerai des pasteurs selon mon cœur, qui vous paîtront de science et d'intelligence.
16 Et il arrivera que quand vous serez multipliés et accrus sur la terre, en ces jours-là, dit l'Eternel, on ne dira plus : L'Arche de l'alliance de l'Eternel; elle ne leur montera plus au cœur, ils n'en feront point mention, ils ne la visiteront plus, et cela ne se fera plus.
17 En ce temps-là on appellera Jérusalem, le Trône de l'Eternel, et toutes les nations s'assembleront vers elle, au Nom de l'Eternel, à Jérusalem, et elles ne marcheront plus après la dureté de leur cœur mauvais.
18 En ces jours-là la maison de Juda marchera avec la maison d'Israël, et ils viendront ensemble du pays d'Aquilon au pays que j'ai donné en héritage à vos pères.
19 Car j'ai dit : comment te mettrai-je entre [mes] fils, et te donnerai-je la terre désirable, l'héritage de la noblesse des armées des nations? et j'ai dit : tu me crieras, mon Père, et tu ne te détourneras point de moi.
20 Certainement comme une femme pèche contre son ami, ainsi avez-vous péché contre moi, maison d'Israël, dit l'Eternel.
21 Une voix a été ouïe sur les lieux élevés, des pleurs de supplications des enfants d'Israël, parce qu'ils ont perverti leur voie, et qu'ils ont mis en oubli l'Eternel, leur Dieu.
22 Enfants rebelles, convertissez-vous, je remédierai à vos rébellions. Voici, nous venons vers toi; car tu [es] l'Eternel notre Dieu.
23 Certainement [on s'attend] en vain aux collines, [et] à la multitude des montagnes; mais c'est en l'Eternel notre Dieu qu'est la délivrance d'Israël.
24 Car la honte a consumé dès notre jeunesse le travail de nos pères, leurs brebis et leurs bœufs, leurs fils et leurs filles.
25 Nous serons gisants dans notre honte, et notre ignominie nous couvrira, parce que nous avons péché contre l'Eternel notre Dieu, nous et nos pères, dès notre jeunesse, et jusqu’à aujourd'hui; et nous n'avons point obéi à la voix de l'Eternel notre Dieu.
1 They say, If a man puts away his wife, and she goes from him, and becomes another man’s, may he return unto her again? shall not that land be greatly polluted? but you have played the harlot with many lovers; yet return again to me, says the LORD.
2 Lift up your eyes unto the high places, and see where you have not been lain with. In the ways have you sat for them, as the Arabian in the wilderness; and you have polluted the land with your harlotries and with your wickedness.
3 Therefore the showers have been withheld, and there has been no latter rain; and you had a harlot’s forehead, you refused to be ashamed.
4 Will you not from this time cry unto me, My father, you are the guide of my youth?
5 Will he reserve his anger forever? will he keep it to the end? Behold, you have spoken and done all the evil things that you could.
6 The LORD said also unto me in the days of Josiah the king, Have you seen that which backsliding Israel has done? she has gone up upon every high mountain and under every green tree, and there has played the harlot.
7 And I said after she had done all these things, Turn you unto me. But she returned not. And her treacherous sister Judah saw it.
8 And I saw, when for all the causes for which backsliding Israel committed adultery I had put her away, and given her a bill of divorce; yet her treacherous sister Judah feared not, but went and played the harlot also.
9 And it came to pass through the lightness of her harlotry, that she defiled the land, and committed adultery with stones and with trees.
10 And yet for all this her treacherous sister Judah has not turned unto me with her whole heart, but in pretense, says the LORD.
11 And the LORD said unto me, The backsliding Israel has justified herself more than treacherous Judah.
12 Go and proclaim these words toward the north, and say, Return, you backsliding Israel, says the LORD; and I will not cause my anger to fall upon you: for I am merciful, says the LORD, and I will not keep anger forever.
13 Only acknowledge your iniquity, that you have transgressed against the LORD your God, and have scattered your favors to the strangers under every green tree, and you have not obeyed my voice, says the LORD.
14 Turn, O backsliding children, says the LORD; for I am married unto you: and I will take you one from a city, and two from a family, and I will bring you to Zion:
15 And I will give you shepherds according to my heart, which shall feed you with knowledge and understanding.
16 And it shall come to pass, when you are multiplied and increased in the land, in those days, says the LORD, they shall say no more, The ark of the covenant of the LORD: neither shall it come to mind: neither shall they remember it; neither shall they visit it; neither shall that be done any more.
17 At that time they shall call Jerusalem the throne of the LORD; and all the nations shall be gathered unto it, to the name of the LORD, to Jerusalem: neither shall they walk any more after the imagination of their evil hearts.
18 In those days the house of Judah shall walk with the house of Israel, and they shall come together out of the land of the north to the land that I have given for an inheritance unto your fathers.
19 But I said, How shall I put you among the children, and give you a pleasant land, a beautiful heritage of the hosts of nations? and I said, You shall call me, My father; and shall not turn away from me.
20 Surely as a wife treacherously departs from her husband, so have you dealt treacherously with me, O house of Israel, says the LORD.
21 A voice was heard upon the high places, weeping and supplications of the children of Israel: for they have perverted their way, and they have forgotten the LORD their God.
22 Return, you backsliding children, and I will heal your backslidings. Behold, we come unto you; for you are the LORD our God.
23 Truly in vain is salvation hoped for from the hills, and from the multitude of mountains: truly in the LORD our God is the salvation of Israel.
24 For shame has devoured the labor of our fathers from our youth; their flocks and their herds, their sons and their daughters.
25 We lie down in our shame, and our disgrace covers us: for we have sinned against the LORD our God, we and our fathers, from our youth even unto this day, and have not obeyed the voice of the LORD our God.
