1 Promenez-vous par les rues de Jérusalem, et regardez maintenant, et sachez, et vous enquérez par ses places, si vous y trouverez un homme de bien, s'il y a quelqu'un qui fasse ce qui est droit, et qui cherche la fidélité; et je pardonnerai à la [ville].
2 Que s'ils disent : l'Eternel est vivant; ils jurent en cela plus faussement.
3 Eternel, tes yeux [ne regardent-ils pas] à la fidélité? Tu les as frappés, et ils n'en ont point senti de douleur; tu les as consumés, [et] ils ont refusé de recevoir instruction; ils ont endurci leurs faces plus qu'une roche, ils ont refusé de se convertir.
4 Et j'ai dit : certainement ce ne sont que les plus abjects, qui se sont montrés fous, parce qu'ils ne connaissent point la voie de l'Eternel, le droit de leur Dieu.
5 Je m'en irai donc aux plus grands, et je leur parlerai; car ceux-là connaissent la voie de l'Eternel, le droit de leur Dieu; mais ceux-là mêmes ont aussi brisé le joug, [et] ont rompu les liens.
6 C'est pourquoi le lion de la forêt les a tués, le loup du soir les a ravagés, [et] le léopard est au guet contre leurs villes; quiconque en sortira sera déchiré, car leurs péchés sont multipliés, [et] leurs rébellions sont renforcées.
7 Comment te pardonnerai-je en cela? tes fils m'ont abandonné, et ils jurent par ceux qui ne sont point dieux; je les ai rassasiés, et ils ont commis adultère et sont allés en foule dans la maison de la prostituée.
8 Ils sont comme des chevaux bien repus, quand ils se lèvent le matin, chacun hennit après la femme de son prochain.
9 Ne punirais-je point ces choses-là, dit l'Eternel? et mon âme ne se vengerait-elle pas d'une nation qui est telle?
10 Montez sur ses murailles, et les rompez; mais ne les achevez pas entièrement; ôtez ses créneaux; car ils ne sont point à l'Eternel.
11 Parce que la maison d'Israël et la maison de Juda se sont portées fort infidèlement contre moi, dit l'Eternel.
12 Ils ont démenti l'Eternel, et ont dit : cela n'arrivera pas, et le mal ne viendra pas sur nous, nous ne verrons pas l'épée ni la famine.
13 Et les Prophètes sont légers comme le vent, et la parole n'est point en eux; ainsi leur sera-t-il fait.
14 C'est pourquoi, ainsi a dit l'Eternel, le Dieu des armées : parce que vous avez proféré cette parole-là, voici, je m'en vais mettre mes paroles en ta bouche pour y être comme un feu, et ce peuple sera comme le bois, et ce feu les consumera.
15 Maison d'Israël, voici, je m'en vais faire venir contre vous une nation d'un pays éloigné, dit l'Eternel, une nation robuste, une nation ancienne, une nation de laquelle tu ne sauras point la Langue, et dont tu n'entendras point ce qu'elle dira.
16 Son carquois est comme un sépulcre ouvert, [et] ils sont tous vaillants.
17 Et elle mangera ta moisson et ton pain, que tes fils et tes filles doivent manger; elle mangera tes brebis, et tes bœufs; elle mangera [les fruits] de tes vignes, et de tes figuiers, et réduira à la pauvreté par l'épée tes villes fortes, sur lesquelles tu te confiais.
18 Toutefois en ces jours-là, dit l'Eternel, je ne vous achèverai pas entièrement.
19 Et il arrivera que vous direz : pourquoi l'Eternel notre Dieu nous a-t-il fait toutes ces choses? et tu leur diras ainsi : comme vous m'avez abandonné, [et] avez servi les dieux de l'étranger dans votre pays, ainsi serez-vous asservis aux étrangers en un pays qui n'est point à vous.
20 Faites savoir ceci dans la maison de Jacob, et le publiez dans Juda, en disant :
21 Ecoutez maintenant ceci, peuple fou, et qui n'avez point d'intelligence, qui avez des yeux, et ne voyez point; et qui avez des oreilles, et n'entendez point.
22 Ne me craindrez-vous point, dit l'Eternel, et ne serez-vous point épouvantés devant ma face? moi qui ai mis le sable pour la borne de la mer, par une ordonnance perpétuelle, et qui ne passera point; ses vagues s'émeuvent, mais elles ne seront pas les plus fortes; et elles bruient, mais elles ne la passeront point.
23 Mais ce peuple-ci a un cœur rétif et rebelle; ils se sont reculés en arrière, et s'en sont allés.
24 Et ils n'ont point dit en leur cœur : craignons maintenant l'Eternel notre Dieu, qui nous donne la pluie de la première et de la dernière saison, [et qui] nous garde les semaines ordonnées pour la moisson.
25 Vos iniquités ont détourné ces choses, et vos péchés ont empêché qu'il ne vous arrivât du bien.
26 Car il s'est trouvé dans mon peuple des méchants qui sont aux aguets, comme celui qui tend des pièges, ils posent une machine de perdition pour y prendre les hommes.
27 Comme la cage est remplie d'oiseaux, ainsi leurs maisons [sont] remplies de fraude, et par ce moyen ils se sont agrandis et enrichis.
28 Ils sont engraissés et parés; même ils ont surpassé les actions des méchants; ils ne font justice à personne, non pas même à l'orphelin, et ils prospèrent, et ne font point droit aux pauvres.
29 Ne punirais-je point ces choses-là, dit l'Eternel? et mon âme ne se vengerait-elle pas d'une nation qui est telle?
30 Il est arrivé en la terre une chose étonnante, et qui fait horreur :
31 C'est que les Prophètes prophétisent le mensonge, et les Sacrificateurs dominent par leur moyen; et mon peuple a aimé cela. Que ferez-vous donc quand elle prendra fin?
1 Run to and fro through the streets of Jerusalem, and see now, and know, and seek in its broad places, if you can find a man, if there is any that executes justice, that seeks the truth; and I will pardon it.
2 And though they say, The LORD lives; surely they swear falsely.
3 O LORD, are not your eyes upon the truth? you have stricken them, but they have not grieved; you have consumed them, but they have refused to receive correction: they have made their faces harder than a rock; they have refused to return.
4 Therefore I said, Surely these are poor; they are foolish: for they know not the way of the LORD, nor the law of their God.
5 I will get me unto the great men, and will speak unto them; for they have known the way of the LORD, and the law of their God: but these have altogether broken the yoke, and burst the bonds.
6 Therefore a lion out of the forest shall slay them, and a wolf of the desert shall destroy them, a leopard shall watch over their cities: everyone that goes out there shall be torn in pieces: because their transgressions are many, and their backslidings are increased.
7 How shall I pardon you for this? your children have forsaken me, and sworn by them that are no gods: when I had fed them to the full, they then committed adultery, and assembled themselves by troops in the harlots’ houses.
8 They were as fed horses in the morning: everyone neighed after his neighbor’s wife.
9 Shall I not punish for these things? says the LORD: and shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?
10 Go you up upon her walls, and destroy; but make not a full end: take away her branches; for they are not the LORD’S.
11 For the house of Israel and the house of Judah have dealt very treacherously against me, says the LORD.
12 They have lied about the LORD, and said, It is not he; neither shall evil come upon us; neither shall we see sword nor famine:
13 And the prophets shall become wind, and the word is not in them: thus shall it be done unto them.
14 Therefore thus says the LORD God of hosts, Because you speak this word, behold, I will make my words in your mouth fire, and this people wood, and it shall devour them.
15 Lo, I will bring a nation upon you from afar, O house of Israel, says the LORD: it is a mighty nation, it is an ancient nation, a nation whose language you know not, neither understand what they say.
16 Their quiver is as an open sepulcher, they are all mighty men.
17 And they shall eat up your harvest, and your bread, which your sons and your daughters should eat: they shall eat up your flocks and your herds: they shall eat up your vines and your fig trees: they shall impoverish your fortified cities, in which you trusted, with the sword.
18 Nevertheless in those days, says the LORD, I will not make a full end with you.
19 And it shall come to pass, when you shall say, Why does the LORD our God all these things unto us? then shall you answer them, Like you have forsaken me, and served foreign gods in your land, so shall you serve strangers in a land that is not yours.
20 Declare this in the house of Jacob, and publish it in Judah, saying,
21 Hear now this, O foolish people, and without understanding; who have eyes, and see not; who have ears, and hear not:
22 Fear you not me? says the LORD: will you not tremble at my presence, who has placed the sand for the bound of the sea by a perpetual decree, that it cannot pass it: and though its waves toss themselves, yet can they not prevail; though they roar, yet can they not pass over it?
23 But this people has a revolting and a rebellious heart; they have revolted and gone away.
24 Neither say they in their heart, Let us now fear the LORD our God, who gives rain, both the former and the latter, in its season: he reserves unto us the appointed weeks of the harvest.
25 Your iniquities have turned away these things, and your sins have withheld good things from you.
26 For among my people are found wicked men: they lie in wait, as he that sets snares; they set a trap, they catch men.
27 As a cage is full of birds, so are their houses full of deceit: therefore they have become great, and grown rich.
28 They have grown fat, they shine: yea, they pass over the deeds of the wicked: they judge not the cause, the cause of the fatherless, yet they prosper; and the right of the needy do they not defend.
29 Shall I not punish for these things? says the LORD: shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?
30 An appalling and horrible thing is committed in the land;
31 The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests bear rule by their own power; and my people love to have it so: and what will you do in the end?
