1 O Senhor Deus me disse:

2 — Preste atenção nas palavras desta aliança. Diga ao povo de Judá e aos moradores de Jerusalém 3 que eu, o Senhor, o Deus de Israel, amaldiçoarei toda pessoa que não obedecer às palavras desta aliança. 4 Esta é a mesma aliança que fiz com os antepassados deles, quando os tirei do Egito, a terra que era para eles como uma fornalha acesa. Eu disse a eles o seguinte: "Se me obedecerem e fizerem tudo o que eu mandar, vocês serão o meu povo, e eu serei o Deus de vocês. 5 Assim cumprirei a promessa que fiz aos seus antepassados, a promessa de lhes dar a terra boa e rica que agora é de vocês."

Eu disse:

— É verdade, ó Senhor.

6 Então Deus continuou:

— Vá até as cidades de Judá e pelas ruas de Jerusalém e anuncie ali esta minha mensagem. Diga aos israelitas que escutem as palavras da aliança e que as cumpram. 7 Quando tirei os antepassados deles do Egito, eu os avisei solenemente que obedecessem às minhas palavras e tenho continuado a avisar o povo até hoje. 8 Mas eles não ouviram, nem obedeceram. Pelo contrário, cada um continuou a ser teimoso e mau como sempre. Eu havia mandado que fossem fiéis à aliança, mas eles não quiseram obedecer. Por isso, eu os castiguei com todos os castigos que estão escritos na aliança.

9 O Senhor Deus ainda me disse o seguinte:

— O povo de Judá e os moradores de Jerusalém estão se revoltando contra mim. 10 Voltaram a cometer os mesmos pecados dos seus antepassados, que não quiseram fazer o que eu havia mandado, e andaram adorando outros deuses. O povo de Israel e o povo de Judá quebraram a aliança que eu fiz com os seus antepassados. 11 Por isso, eu, o Senhor, aviso que vou fazer cair uma desgraça sobre eles, e eles não escaparão. E, quando gritarem pedindo socorro, eu não escutarei. 12 Aí o povo de Judá e os moradores de Jerusalém vão pedir socorro aos deuses a quem vivem oferecendo sacrifícios. Mas, quando a desgraça chegar, esses deuses não poderão salvá-los. 13 O povo de Judá tem tantos deuses quantas são as suas cidades; e, para oferecerem os vergonhosos sacrifícios ao deus Baal, os moradores de Jerusalém levantaram tantos altares quantas são as ruas da cidade. 14 Jeremias, não ore a mim por este povo, nem me peça nada em favor dele. Quando eles estiverem em dificuldades e me pedirem socorro, eu não ouvirei.

15 O Senhor disse também:

— O povo que eu amo está praticando o mal. Que direito eles têm de vir ao meu Templo? Será que estão pensando que podem afastar a desgraça, fazendo promessas e oferecendo sacrifícios de animais? E será que então vão ficar contentes? 16 Uma vez, eu os chamei de oliveira verde, carregada de belas azeitonas. Mas, agora, com um estrondo de trovão, vou pôr fogo nas suas folhas e quebrar os seus ramos.

17 — Eu, o Senhor Todo-Poderoso, plantei Israel e Judá; mas, agora, eu os estou ameaçando com um desastre. Eles mesmos fizeram cair sobre si esse desastre porque fizeram o mal e me provocaram oferecendo sacrifícios a Baal.

18 O Senhor Deus me contou as maldades que os meus inimigos estavam planejando contra mim. 19 Eu era como um cordeiro manso que é levado para ser morto. Não sabia que era contra mim que eles estavam planejando maldades. Eles diziam o seguinte:

— Vamos derrubar a árvore enquanto ainda está forte. Vamos matar Jeremias para que nunca mais ninguém lembre dele.

20 Então eu orei assim:

— Ó Senhor Todo-Poderoso, tu és um juiz justo. Tu examinas os nossos pensamentos e os nossos sentimentos. Deixa que eu veja a tua vingança contra eles, pois coloquei a minha causa nas tuas mãos.

21 Os homens de Anatote queriam me ver morto. Disseram que, se continuasse a pregar em nome de Deus, eles me matariam. 22 Então o Senhor Todo-Poderoso disse a respeito deles:

— Eu os castigarei. Os seus moços serão mortos na guerra, e os seus filhos e filhas morrerão de fome. 23 Não sobrará nenhum deles quando chegar a desgraça que eu vou mandar cair sobre o povo de Anatote.

1 The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying,2 "Hear the words of this covenant, and speak to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem;3 and say to them, 'Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: "Cursed is the man who doesn't hear the words of this covenant,4 which I commanded your fathers in the day that I brought them forth out of the land of Egypt, out of the iron furnace, saying, "Obey my voice, and do them, according to all which I command you: so you shall be my people, and I will be your God;5 that I may establish the oath which I swore to your fathers, to give them a land flowing with milk and honey," as at this day.'" Then I answered, and said, "Amen, Lord."6 The Lord said to me, "Proclaim all these words in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem, saying, 'Hear the words of this covenant, and do them.7 For I earnestly protested to your fathers in the day that I brought them up out of the land of Egypt, even to this day, rising early and protesting, saying, Obey my voice.8 Yet they did not obey, nor turn their ear, but walked everyone in the stubbornness of their evil heart: therefore I brought on them all the words of this covenant, which I commanded them to do, but they did not do them.'"9 The Lord said to me, "A conspiracy is found among the men of Judah, and among the inhabitants of Jerusalem.10 They are turned back to the iniquities of their forefathers, who refused to hear my words; and they are gone after other gods to serve them: the house of Israel and the house of Judah have broken my covenant which I made with their fathers.11 Therefore thus says the Lord, 'Behold, I will bring disaster on them, which they shall not be able to escape; and they shall cry to me, but I will not listen to them.12 Then shall the cities of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem go and cry to the gods to which they offer incense: but they will not save them at all in the time of their trouble.13 For according to the number of your cities are your gods, Judah; and according to the number of the streets of Jerusalem have you set up altars to the shameful thing, even altars to burn incense to Baal.'14 Therefore do not pray for this people, neither lift up cry nor prayer for them; for I will not hear them in the time that they cry to me because of their trouble."15 "What has my beloved to do in my house, since she has worked lewdness with many, and the holy flesh is passed from you? When you do evil, then you rejoice.16 The Lord called your name, "A green olive tree, beautiful with goodly fruit." With the noise of a great tumult he has kindled fire on it, and its branches are broken.17 For the Lord of hosts, who planted you, has pronounced evil against you, because of the evil of the house of Israel and of the house of Judah, which they have worked for themselves in provoking me to anger by offering incense to Baal."18 The Lord gave me knowledge of it, and I knew it: then you showed me their doings.19 But I was like a gentle lamb that is led to the slaughter; and I did not know that they had devised devices against me, saying, "Let us destroy the tree with its fruit, and let us cut him off from the land of the living, that his name may be no more remembered."20 "But, the Lord of hosts, who judges righteously, who tests the heart and the mind, I shall see your vengeance on them; for to you have I revealed my cause."21 Therefore thus says the Lord concerning the men of Anathoth, who seek your life, saying, "You shall not prophesy in the name of the Lord, that you not die by our hand;"22 therefore thus says the Lord of hosts, "Behold, I will punish them: the young men shall die by the sword; their sons and their daughters shall die by famine;23 and there shall be no remnant to them: for I will bring disaster on the men of Anathoth, even the year of their visitation."
