1 No quarto ano do reinado de Jeoaquim, filho de Josias, em Judá, eu recebi do Senhor uma mensagem a respeito de todo o povo de Judá. Isso aconteceu no primeiro ano do reinado de Nabucodonosor, da Babilônia. 2 Eu disse a todo o povo de Judá e a todos os moradores de Jerusalém:

3 — Durante vinte e três anos, desde o ano décimo terceiro do reinado de Josias, filho de Amom, em Judá, até hoje, o Senhor Deus tem falado comigo, e eu sempre lhes tenho contado o que ele diz. Mas vocês não têm dado atenção. 4 Vocês não ouviram, nem deram atenção, embora o Senhor continuasse a enviar os seus servos, os profetas. 5 Eles disseram que vocês deviam abandonar a vida errada que estão levando e as coisas más que estão fazendo. Assim poderiam continuar a viver na terra que Deus deu a vocês e aos seus antepassados para ser sua propriedade para sempre. 6 Os profetas disseram que vocês não deviam andar procurando outros deuses para adorar, que não deviam fazer o Senhor ficar irado por causa dos ídolos que vocês fizeram. 7 Mas o Senhor mesmo diz que vocês não quiseram ouvi-lo. Pelo contrário, fizeram com que o Senhor ficasse irado por causa dos seus ídolos e por isso vocês foram castigados.

8 — Portanto, porque vocês não quiseram escutar as suas palavras, o Senhor Todo-Poderoso diz: 9 "Eu mandarei buscar todos os povos do Norte e também meu servo, o rei Nabucodonosor, da Babilônia. Vou trazer esses povos para lutarem contra os moradores desta terra de Judá e contra todas as nações vizinhas. Eu as destruirei completamente; elas ficarão arrasadas para sempre e serão um espetáculo horrível e assustador. Sou eu, o Senhor, quem está falando. 10 Vou acabar com os seus gritos de alegria e de felicidade e com o barulho alegre das festas de casamento. Vocês não terão mantimento para comer nem azeite para as lamparinas. 11 Toda esta terra ficará arrasada e será um espetáculo horrível. Todas estas nações serão dominadas pelo rei da Babilônia durante setenta anos. 12 Depois disso, eu castigarei o rei da Babilônia e a sua nação por causa do pecado deles. Destruirei o seu país e o deixarei arrasado para sempre. Sou eu, o Senhor, quem está falando. 13 Castigarei aquela nação com tudo aquilo que ameacei fazer, com todas as coisas escritas neste livro, as coisas que Jeremias falou contra todas estas nações. 14 Eles se tornarão escravos de muitas nações e de reis poderosos e assim eles me pagarão por tudo aquilo que fizeram."

15 O Senhor, o Deus de Israel, me disse:

— Aqui está um copo cheio do vinho da minha ira. Pegue este copo e faça com que bebam dele todos os povos aos quais eu estou enviando você. 16 Quando beberem, tremerão e ficarão loucos por causa da guerra que mandarei contra eles.

17 Então peguei o copo da mão do Senhor, e fiz com que bebessem dele todos os povos aos quais o Senhor me havia mandado. 18 Tanto Jerusalém como todas as cidades de Judá, junto com os seus reis e as suas autoridades, tiveram de beber. Beberam para se transformar num deserto, num espetáculo horrível e assustador, do qual as pessoas falam para rogar pragas. E isso é o que se vê hoje .

19-26 Esta é a lista de todos os outros que tiveram de beber do copo da ira de Deus:

O rei do Egito, os seus oficiais e as suas autoridades;

todos os egípcios e todos os estrangeiros no Egito;

todos os reis da terra de Uz;

todos os governadores das cidades dos filisteus: Asquelom, Gaza, Ecrom e o que resta de Asdode;

todo o povo de Edom, Moabe e Amom;

todos os reis de Tiro e de Sidom;

todos os reis das terras que ficam no litoral do mar Mediterrâneo;

as cidades de Dedã, Temá e Buz;

todos os povos que cortam curto o cabelo ;

todos os reis da Arábia;

todos os reis das tribos do deserto;

todos os reis de Zinri, Elão e Média;

todos os reis do Norte, de longe e de perto, um depois do outro.

Todas as nações do mundo tiveram de beber. E o último que vai beber será o rei da Babilônia.

27 Aí Deus me disse:

— Diga ao povo que eu, o Senhor Todo-Poderoso, o Deus de Israel, estou mandando que eles bebam até ficarem bêbados e vomitarem, até caírem e não poderem mais se levantar por causa da guerra que mandarei contra eles. 28 E, se eles não quiserem pegar o copo da sua mão, Jeremias, se recusarem beber, diga que o Senhor Todo-Poderoso disse que eles serão obrigados a beber. 29 Começarei a destruição pela minha própria cidade. Será que eles estão pensando que vão escapar do castigo? De jeito nenhum! Eles serão castigados, pois eu mandarei guerra a todos os povos do mundo. Eu, o Senhor Todo-Poderoso, estou falando.

30 — Você, Jeremias, anuncie tudo o que eu disse. Diga a este povo o seguinte:

"O Senhor vai trovejar lá do céu

e falar lá do lugar santo onde mora.

Ele trovejará contra o seu povo,

gritará como aqueles que pisam uvas para fazer vinho.

E todos na terra o ouvirão.

31 O estrondo será ouvido no mundo inteiro,

pois Deus tem uma acusação para fazer contra as nações.

Ele julgará todas as pessoas

e matará os maus.

O Senhor Deus está falando."

32 O Senhor Todo-Poderoso diz que a desgraça passará de uma nação para outra e que uma grande tempestade está se formando nos fins da terra. 33 Naquele dia, os corpos daqueles que o Senhor matou serão espalhados pelo mundo inteiro. Ninguém chorará por eles. Os corpos deles não serão recolhidos, nem sepultados: ficarão largados no chão, como esterco.

34 Vocês, autoridades, gritem! Vocês que guiam o rebanho do meu povo, gritem bem alto! Chorem e rolem no pó! Chegou a hora de vocês serem mortos: vocês cairão mortos como se fossem carneiros escolhidos. 35 Os líderes do povo não escaparão, nem se salvarão. 36,37 Eles gritam e gemem de aflição, pois Deus, na sua ira, destruiu a nação deles e arrasou as suas terras tão cheias de paz. 38 Deus abandonou o seu povo como um leão que abandona a sua cova. Os horrores da guerra e a violenta ira de Deus transformaram o país num deserto.

1 The word that came to Jeremiah concerning all the people of Judah, in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah (the same was the first year of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon),2 which Jeremiah the prophet spoke to all the people of Judah, and to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, saying:3 "From the thirteenth year of Josiah the son of Amon, king of Judah, even to this day, these twenty-three years, the word of the Lord has come to me, and I have spoken to you, rising up early and speaking; but you have not listened.4 The Lord has sent to you all his servants the prophets, rising up early and sending them (but you have not listened, nor inclined your ear to hear)5 saying, 'Return now everyone from his evil way, and from the evil of your doings, and dwell in the land that the Lord has given to you and to your fathers, from of old and even forevermore;6 and do not go after other gods to serve them or worship them, and do not provoke me to anger with the work of your hands; and I will do you no harm.7 Yet you have not listened to me,' says the Lord; 'that you may provoke me to anger with the work of your hands to your own hurt.'8 Therefore thus says the Lord of hosts: 'Because you have not heard my words,9 behold, I will send and take all the families of the north,' says the Lord, 'and I will send to Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, my servant, and will bring them against this land, and against its inhabitants, and against all these nations around; and I will utterly destroy them, and make them an astonishment, and a hissing, and perpetual desolations.10 Moreover I will take from them the voice of mirth and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride, the sound of the millstones, and the light of the lamp.11 This whole land shall be a desolation, and an astonishment; and these nations shall serve the king of Babylon seventy years.12 It shall happen, when seventy years are accomplished, that I will punish the king of Babylon, and that nation, says the Lord, for their iniquity, and the land of the Chaldeans; and I will make it desolate forever.13 I will bring on that land all my words which I have pronounced against it, even all that is written in this book, which Jeremiah has prophesied against all the nations.14 For many nations and great kings shall make bondservants of them, even of them; and I will recompense them according to their deeds, and according to the work of their hands.'"15 For thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, to me: "Take this cup of the wine of wrath at my hand, and cause all the nations, to whom I send you, to drink it.16 They shall drink, and reel back and forth, and be mad, because of the sword that I will send among them."17 Then took I the cup at the Lord's hand, and made all the nations to drink, to whom the Lord had sent me:18 Jerusalem, and the cities of Judah, and its kings, and its princes, to make them a desolation, an astonishment, a hissing, and a curse, as it is this day;19 Pharaoh king of Egypt, and his servants, and his princes, and all his people;20 and all the mixed people, and all the kings of the land of the Uz, and all the kings of the Philistines, and Ashkelon, and Gaza, and Ekron, and the remnant of Ashdod;21 Edom, and Moab, and the children of Ammon;22 and all the kings of Tyre, and all the kings of Sidon, and the kings of the isle which is beyond the sea;23 Dedan, and Tema, and Buz, and all who have the corners of their beard cut off;24 and all the kings of Arabia, and all the kings of the mixed people who dwell in the wilderness;25 and all the kings of Zimri, and all the kings of Elam, and all the kings of the Medes;26 and all the kings of the north, far and near, one with another; and all the kingdoms of the world, which are on the surface of the earth: and the king of Sheshach shall drink after them.27 "You shall tell them, 'Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: "Drink, and be drunk, vomit, fall, and rise no more, because of the sword which I will send among you."'28 It shall be, if they refuse to take the cup at your hand to drink, then you shall tell them, 'Thus says the Lord of hosts: "You shall surely drink.29 For, behold, I begin to work evil at the city which is called by my name; and should you be utterly unpunished? You shall not be unpunished; for I will call for a sword on all the inhabitants of the earth,"' says the Lord of hosts.30 Therefore prophesy you against them all these words, and tell them, 'The Lord will roar from on high, and utter his voice from his holy habitation; he will mightily roar against his fold; he will give a shout, as those who tread grapes, against all the inhabitants of the earth.31 A noise shall come even to the end of the earth; for the Lord has a controversy with the nations; he will enter into judgment with all flesh: as for the wicked, he will give them to the sword,' says the Lord.32 'Thus says the Lord of hosts, 'Behold, evil shall go forth from nation to nation, and a great storm shall be raised up from the uttermost parts of the earth.'33 The slain of the Lord shall be at that day from one end of the earth even to the other end of the earth: they shall not be lamented, neither gathered, nor buried; they shall be dung on the surface of the ground.34 Wail, you shepherds, and cry; and wallow in dust, you principal of the flock; for the days of your slaughter and of your dispersions are fully come, and you shall fall like a goodly vessel.35 The shepherds shall have no way to flee, nor the principal of the flock to escape.36 A voice of the cry of the shepherds, and the wailing of the principal of the flock! For the Lord lays waste their pasture.37 The peaceable folds are brought to silence because of the fierce anger of the Lord.38 He has left his covert, as the lion; for their land has become an astonishment because of the fierceness of the oppression, and because of his fierce anger."
