1 Deus me falou a respeito de todos os judeus que estavam vivendo no Egito, nas cidades de Migdol, Tafnes e Mênfis e no Sul do país. 2 O Senhor Todo-Poderoso, o Deus de Israel, disse:

— Vocês viram a desgraça que eu fiz cair sobre Jerusalém e sobre todas as outras cidades de Judá. Até hoje, estão arrasadas, e ninguém mora nelas. 3 Isso aconteceu porque o povo dessas cidades fez coisas más e assim provocou a minha ira. Eles ofereceram sacrifícios a outros deuses e foram atrás de deuses que nem eles, nem vocês, nem os antepassados de vocês haviam adorado antes. 4 Eu sempre continuei a mandar a vocês todos os meus servos, os profetas, para lhes dizerem que não fizessem essa coisa horrível que eu detesto. 5 Mas vocês não quiseram dar atenção e não obedeceram. Não quiseram deixar esse mau costume de oferecer sacrifícios aos ídolos. 6 Por isso, eu fiz cair a minha ira e o meu furor sobre as cidades de Judá e sobre as ruas de Jerusalém e as incendiei. Elas ficaram arrasadas e até hoje são um espetáculo de horror.

7 — Por isso, eu, o Senhor Todo-Poderoso, o Deus de Israel, pergunto agora: por que vocês estão fazendo este mal tão grande contra vocês mesmos? Será que estão querendo destruir homens e mulheres, crianças e bebês, de modo que não fique sobrando ninguém? 8 Por que é que vocês me irritam com os seus ídolos, oferecendo sacrifícios a outros deuses aqui no Egito, onde vieram morar? Será que estão fazendo isso para se destruírem, e para que todas as nações da terra zombem de vocês e usem o seu nome para rogar pragas? 9 Será que já esqueceram as maldades que foram feitas nas cidades de Judá e nas ruas de Jerusalém pelos seus antepassados, pelos reis de Judá e as suas mulheres e por vocês e as suas mulheres? 10 Mas até hoje vocês não se humilharam, não me respeitaram e não viveram de acordo com as leis e os mandamentos que dei a vocês e aos seus antepassados.

11 — Portanto, eu, o Senhor Todo-Poderoso, o Deus de Israel, destruirei vocês e acabarei completamente com o povo de Judá. 12 Será destruído todo o povo de Judá que ficou na sua terra e depois resolveu ir morar no Egito. Todos eles, tanto os importantes como os humildes, morrerão no Egito: morrerão na guerra ou de fome. Eles serão um espetáculo de horror. Os outros zombarão deles e usarão o seu nome para rogar pragas. 13 Eu castigarei aqueles que estão morando no Egito como castiguei Jerusalém, isto é, com guerra, fome e doença. 14 Aqueles que ficaram em Judá e depois vieram morar no Egito não escaparão; nenhum deles ficará vivo. Eles gostariam de voltar para morar na terra de Judá, mas nenhum deles vai poder fazer isso. Só alguns fugitivos voltarão para lá.

15 Uma grande multidão veio falar comigo. Eram todos os homens que sabiam que as suas mulheres tinham oferecido sacrifícios a outros deuses, e todas as mulheres que estavam ali, e os judeus que viviam no Sul do Egito. Eles disseram:

16 — Nós não vamos dar atenção ao que você nos disse em nome de Deus, o Senhor. 17 Pelo contrário, vamos fazer tudo o que prometemos. Vamos oferecer sacrifícios à deusa chamada "Rainha do Céu". Vamos fazer a ela oferta de bebidas, como nós e os nossos antepassados, os nossos reis e as nossas autoridades costumávamos fazer nas cidades de Judá e nas ruas de Jerusalém. Naquele tempo, tínhamos muita comida, os negócios iam bem, e nenhum mal nos acontecia. 18 Mas, desde que paramos de oferecer sacrifícios à Rainha do Céu e deixamos de lhe fazer ofertas de bebidas, começou a nos faltar tudo, e o nosso povo tem morrido na guerra e de fome.

19 E as mulheres disseram:

— Os nossos maridos achavam bom quando assávamos bolos marcados com a figura da imagem da Rainha do Céu e quando lhe oferecíamos sacrifícios e fazíamos ofertas de bebidas.

20 Ao ouvir essa resposta, eu disse o seguinte a todo o povo, aos homens e às mulheres:

21 — Será que vocês estão pensando que o Senhor não sabia ou que tinha esquecido os sacrifícios que vocês e os seus antepassados, os seus reis, as suas autoridades e o povo de Judá ofereceram nas suas cidades e nas ruas de Jerusalém? 22 Por isso, a terra de vocês é hoje um deserto, e ninguém vive lá. Ela se tornou um espetáculo de horror, e as pessoas usam o seu nome para rogar pragas. Isso porque o Senhor não podia mais aguentar o que vocês estavam fazendo, isto é, as maldades e as coisas que ele detesta. 23 Essa desgraça aconteceu e continua até hoje porque vocês ofereceram sacrifícios a outros deuses e pecaram contra o Senhor. Vocês não estavam vivendo de acordo com os ensinos, as instruções e os mandamentos dele.

24,25 Eu continuei a dizer a todo o povo e às mulheres aquilo que o Senhor Todo-Poderoso me havia mandado dizer ao povo de Judá que vivia no Egito. Ele me havia mandado dizer o seguinte:

— Tanto vocês como as suas mulheres fizeram promessas à Rainha do Céu. Vocês prometeram que iam lhe oferecer sacrifícios e fazer ofertas de bebidas e têm cumprido essa promessa. Está bem! Paguem as suas promessas! Cumpram os votos que fizeram! 26 Mas agora escutem bem a promessa que eu, o Senhor, vou fazer em meu poderoso nome a todos vocês, judeus que estão no Egito. Nunca mais deixarei que nenhum de vocês use o meu nome para fazer uma promessa, dizendo: "Juro pela vida do Senhor, nosso Deus." 27 Eu não vou trazer para vocês a felicidade, mas a desgraça. Vocês, todo o povo de Judá que vive no Egito, vão morrer na guerra ou de doença, até que se acabem. 28 Mas alguns escaparão da morte e voltarão do Egito para Judá. Então todos os que continuaram vivos em Judá e que vieram para o Egito ficarão sabendo qual foi a palavra que se cumpriu, se a minha ou a deles. 29 Eu, o Senhor, dou a vocês um sinal como prova de que os castigarei neste lugar e de que a minha promessa de destruí-los se cumprirá. 30 O sinal é este: eu entregarei o rei Hofra, do Egito, nas mãos dos seus inimigos que querem matá-lo, assim como entreguei o rei Zedequias, de Judá, ao rei Nabucodonosor, da Babilônia, que era seu inimigo e queria matá-lo.

1 The word that came to Jeremiah concerning all the Jews who lived in the land of Egypt, who lived at Migdol, and at Tahpanhes, and at Memphis, and in the country of Pathros, saying,2 "Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: 'You have seen all the evil that I have brought on Jerusalem, and on all the cities of Judah; and behold, this day they are a desolation, and no man dwells therein,3 because of their wickedness which they have committed to provoke me to anger, in that they went to burn incense, to serve other gods, that they did not know, neither they, nor you, nor your fathers.4 However I sent to you all my servants the prophets, rising up early and sending them, saying, 'Oh, do not do this abominable thing that I hate.'5 But they did not listen, nor inclined their ear to turn from their wickedness, to burn no incense to other gods.6 Therefore my wrath and my anger was poured forth, and was kindled in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem; and they are wasted and desolate, as it is this day.'7 Therefore now thus says the Lord, the God of Hosts, the God of Israel: 'Why do you commit great evil against your own souls, to cut off from yourselves man and woman, infant and nursing child out of the midst of Judah, to leave yourselves none remaining;8 in that you provoke me to anger with the works of your hands, burning incense to other gods in the land of Egypt, where you have gone to live; that you may be cut off, and that you may be a curse and a reproach among all the nations of the earth?9 Have you forgotten the wickedness of your fathers, and the wickedness of the kings of Judah, and the wickedness of their wives, and your own wickedness, and the wickedness of your wives which they committed in the land of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem?10 They are not humbled even to this day, neither have they feared, nor walked in my law, nor in my statutes, that I set before you and before your fathers.'11 Therefore thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: 'Behold, I will set my face against you for evil, even to cut off all Judah.12 I will take the remnant of Judah, that have set their faces to go into the land of Egypt to live there, and they shall all be consumed; in the land of Egypt shall they fall; they shall be consumed by the sword and by the famine; they shall die, from the least even to the greatest, by the sword and by the famine; and they shall be an object of horror, an astonishment, and a curse, and a reproach.13 For I will punish those who dwell in the land of Egypt, as I have punished Jerusalem, by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence;14 so that none of the remnant of Judah, who have gone into the land of Egypt to live there, shall escape or be left, to return into the land of Judah, to which they have a desire to return to dwell there: for none shall return save such as shall escape.'"15 Then all the men who knew that their wives burned incense to other gods, and all the women who stood by, a great assembly, even all the people who lived in the land of Egypt, in Pathros, answered Jeremiah, saying,16 "As for the word that you have spoken to us in the name of the Lord, we will not listen to you.17 But we will certainly perform every word that is gone forth out of our mouth, to burn incense to the queen of the sky, and to pour out drink offerings to her, as we have done, we and our fathers, our kings and our princes, in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem; for then had we plenty of food, and were well, and saw no evil.18 But since we left off burning incense to the queen of the sky, and pouring out drink offerings to her, we have wanted all things, and have been consumed by the sword and by the famine.19 When we burned incense to the queen of the sky, and poured out drink offerings to her, did we make her cakes to worship her, and pour out drink offerings to her, without our husbands?"20 Then Jeremiah said to all the people, to the men, and to the women, even to all the people who had given him an answer, saying,21 "The incense that you burned in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem, you and your fathers, your kings and your princes, and the people of the land. Did not the Lord remember them, and did not it come into his mind,22 so that the Lord could no longer bear because of the evil of your doings, and because of the abominations which you have committed? Therefore your land has become a desolation, and an astonishment, and a curse, without inhabitant, as it is this day.23 Because you have burned incense, and because you have sinned against the Lord, and have not obeyed the voice of the Lord, nor walked in his law, nor in his statutes, nor in his testimonies; therefore this evil has happened to you, as it is this day."24 Moreover Jeremiah said to all the people, and to all the women, "Hear the word of the Lord, all Judah who are in the land of Egypt:25 Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, saying, 'You and your wives have both spoken with your mouths, and with your hands have fulfilled it, saying, "We will surely perform our vows that we have vowed, to burn incense to the queen of the sky, and to pour out drink offerings to her": establish then your vows, and perform your vows.'26 Therefore hear the word of the Lord, all Judah who dwell in the land of Egypt: 'Behold, I have sworn by my great name,' says the Lord, 'that my name shall no more be named in the mouth of any man of Judah in all the land of Egypt, saying, "As the Lord God lives."27 Behold, I watch over them for evil, and not for good; and all the men of Judah who are in the land of Egypt shall be consumed by the sword and by the famine, until they are all gone.28 Those who escape the sword shall return out of the land of Egypt into the land of Judah, few in number; and all the remnant of Judah, who have gone into the land of Egypt to live there, shall know whose word shall stand, mine, or theirs.29 This shall be the sign to you,' says the Lord, 'that I will punish you in this place, that you may know that my words shall surely stand against you for evil':30 Thus says the Lord, 'Behold, I will give Pharaoh Hophra king of Egypt into the hand of his enemies, and into the hand of those who seek his life; as I gave Zedekiah king of Judah into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, who was his enemy, and sought his life.'"
