1 Quando acabei de dizer ao povo tudo o que o Senhor, seu Deus, havia ordenado, 2 Azarias, filho de Hosaías, e Joanã, filho de Careá, e todos os homens orgulhosos me disseram:

— Você está mentindo, Jeremias. O Senhor, nosso Deus, não mandou você dizer que não devíamos ir morar no Egito. 3 Baruque, filho de Nerias, é que está jogando você contra nós para nos entregar nas mãos dos babilônios a fim de sermos mortos ou levados para a Babilônia.

4 Assim Joanã, e os oficiais do exército, e todo o povo não quiseram obedecer à ordem que o Senhor Deus tinha dado para ficar em Judá. 5 Então Joanã e os oficiais do exército levaram para o Egito todos os que haviam ficado em Judá. Levaram todas as pessoas que viviam em Judá e que tinham voltado das nações onde haviam sido espalhadas: 6 homens, mulheres, crianças e as filhas do rei. Levaram todos os que o comandante-geral Nebuzaradã tinha deixado aos cuidados de Gedalias. E Baruque e eu também fomos obrigados a ir. 7 Assim desobedeceram a Deus e foram para o Egito e chegaram até a cidade de Tafnes.

8 Em Tafnes Deus me disse:

9 — Jeremias, pegue algumas pedras grandes e enterre-as no barro que está no calçamento que fica em frente do palácio do governo, aqui na cidade. E deixe que alguns judeus vejam você fazer isso. 10 Depois, diga a eles o seguinte: "Eu, o Senhor Todo-Poderoso, o Deus de Israel, mandarei vir o meu servo Nabucodonosor, rei da Babilônia. Ele vai pôr o seu trono em cima dessas pedras que você enterrou e vai armar a barraca real sobre elas. 11 Nabucodonosor virá e derrotará o Egito. Os que tiverem de morrer de doença morrerão de doença; os que tiverem de cair prisioneiros serão levados como prisioneiros; e os que tiverem de morrer na guerra morrerão na guerra. 12 Eu queimarei os templos dos deuses do Egito; farei com que o rei da Babilônia ponha fogo nesses deuses ou os leve embora. Assim como o pastor cata os piolhos das suas roupas para limpá-las, também o rei da Babilônia limpará a terra do Egito e sairá dali vitorioso. 13 Ele destruirá os monumentos sagrados de Heliópolis, no Egito, e queimará os templos dos deuses egípcios."

The Lord our God has not sent you to say, 'You shall not go into Egypt to live there';3 but Baruch the son of Neriah sets you on against us, to deliver us into the hand of the Chaldeans, that they may put us to death, and carry us away captive to Babylon."4 So Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces, and all the people, did not obey the voice of the Lord, to dwell in the land of Judah.5 But Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces, took all the remnant of Judah, who were returned from all the nations where they had been driven, to live in the land of Judah;6 the men, and the women, and the children, and the king's daughters, and every person who Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard had left with Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan; and Jeremiah the prophet, and Baruch the son of Neriah;7 and they came into the land of Egypt; for they did not obey the voice of the Lord: and they came to Tahpanhes.8 Then came the word of the Lord to Jeremiah in Tahpanhes, saying,9 "Take great stones in your hand, and hide them in mortar in the brick work, which is at the entry of Pharaoh's house in Tahpanhes, in the sight of the men of Judah;10 and tell them, 'Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: "Behold, I will send and take Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, my servant, and will set his throne on these stones that I have hidden; and he shall spread his royal pavilion over them.11 He shall come, and shall strike the land of Egypt; such as are for death shall be put to death, and such as are for captivity to captivity, and such as are for the sword to the sword.12 I will kindle a fire in the houses of the gods of Egypt; and he shall burn them, and carry them away captive: and he shall array himself with the land of Egypt, as a shepherd puts on his garment; and he shall go forth from there in peace.13 He shall also break the pillars of Beth Shemesh, that is in the land of Egypt; and the houses of the gods of Egypt shall he burn with fire."'"
