1 O rei Acabe contou à sua esposa Jezabel tudo o que Elias havia feito e como havia matado à espada todos os profetas do deus Baal. 2 Aí ela mandou um mensageiro a Elias com o seguinte recado:

— Que os deuses me matem, se até amanhã a esta hora eu não fizer com você o mesmo que você fez com os profetas!

3 Elias ficou com medo e, para salvar a vida, fugiu com o seu ajudante para a cidade de Berseba, que ficava na região de Judá. Deixou ali o seu ajudante 4 e foi para o deserto, andando um dia inteiro. Aí parou, sentou-se na sombra de uma árvore e teve vontade de morrer. Então orou assim:

— Já chega, ó Senhor Deus! Acaba agora com a minha vida! Eu sou um fracasso, como foram os meus antepassados .

5 Elias se deitou debaixo da árvore e caiu no sono. De repente, um anjo tocou nele e disse:

— Levante-se e coma.

6 Elias olhou em volta e viu perto da sua cabeça um pão assado nas pedras e uma jarra de água. Ele comeu, e bebeu, e dormiu de novo. 7 O anjo do Senhor Deus voltou e tocou nele pela segunda vez, dizendo:

— Levante-se e coma; se não, você não aguentará a viagem.

8 Elias se levantou, comeu e bebeu, e a comida lhe deu força bastante para andar quarenta dias e quarenta noites até o Sinai, o monte sagrado. 9 Ali ele entrou numa caverna para passar a noite, e, de repente, o Senhor Deus lhe perguntou:

— O que você está fazendo aqui, Elias?

10 Ele respondeu:

— Ó Senhor, Deus Todo-Poderoso, eu sempre tenho servido a ti e só a ti. Mas o povo de Israel quebrou a sua aliança contigo, derrubou os teus altares e matou todos os teus profetas. Eu sou o único que sobrou, e eles estão querendo me matar!

11 O Senhor Deus disse:

— Saia e vá ficar diante de mim no alto do monte.

Então o Senhor passou por ali e mandou um vento muito forte, que rachou os morros e quebrou as rochas em pedaços. Mas o Senhor não estava no vento. Quando o vento parou de soprar, veio um terremoto; porém o Senhor não estava no terremoto. 12 Depois do terremoto veio um fogo, mas o Senhor não estava no fogo. E depois do fogo veio um sussurro calmo e suave.

13 Quando Elias ouviu o sussurro, cobriu o rosto com a capa. Então saiu e ficou na entrada da caverna. E uma voz lhe disse:

— O que você está fazendo aqui, Elias?

14 Ele respondeu:

— Ó Senhor, Deus Todo-Poderoso, eu sempre tenho servido a ti e só a ti. Mas o povo de Israel quebrou a sua aliança contigo, derrubou os teus altares e matou todos os teus profetas. Eu sou o único que sobrou, e eles estão querendo me matar!

15 Então o Senhor Deus disse:

— Volte para o deserto que fica perto de Damasco. Chegando lá, entre na cidade e unja Hazael como rei da Síria. 16 Unja Jeú, filho de Ninsi, como rei de Israel e unja Eliseu, filho de Safate, de Abel-Meolá, como profeta, para ficar em lugar de você. 17 As pessoas que não forem mortas por Hazael serão mortas por Jeú, e todos os que escaparem de Jeú serão mortos por Eliseu. 18 Mas eu deixarei sete mil pessoas vivas em Israel, isto é, todos aqueles que não adoraram o deus Baal e não beijaram a sua imagem.

19 Elias saiu e encontrou Eliseu, que estava arando a terra. Na frente dele iam doze pares de bois, e ele estava arando com o último par. Elias passou perto de Eliseu e jogou a sua capa em cima dele. 20 Então Eliseu largou os seus bois, correu atrás de Elias e disse:

— Deixe que eu vá beijar o meu pai e a minha mãe e depois eu irei com você.

Elias respondeu:

— Está bem. Pode ir. Eu não estou impedindo.

21 Aí Eliseu deixou Elias e foi até o lugar onde estavam os dois bois e matou-os. Então fez fogo com a madeira da canga e cozinhou a carne.

Depois deu a carne ao povo, e eles comeram. Então saiu, e foi com Elias, e ficou trabalhando como seu ajudante.

1 And Ahab told Jezebel, all that Elijah had done,and withal, how he had slain all the prophets with the sword.

2 Then sent Jezebel a messenger unto Elijah, saying,So, let the gods do, and, so, let them add, if, by this time to-morrow, I make not thy life as the life of one of them.

3 And, when he saw , he arose, and went for his life, and came to Beer-sheba, which belongeth to Judah,and left his servant there.

4 But, he himself, went into the wilderness a days journey, and came and sat down under a certain shrub,and asked for his life, that he might die, and saidEnough, now, O Yahweh! take away my life, for, no better, am, I, than, my fathers.

5 And, as he lay, and slept, under a certain shrub, lo! a messenger, touching him, who said to himRise, eat.

6 So he looked about, and lo! at his head, a cake baked on hot stones, and a cruse of water,and he did eat and drink, and then went back and lay down.

7 And the messenger of Yahweh came again a second time, and touched him, and saidRise, eat,because, too much for thee, is the journey.

8 So he arose, and did eat and drink,and journeyed, in the strength of that eating, forty days and forty nights, as far as the mountain of GodHoreb.

9 And he entered, there, into a cave, and lodged there,and lo! the word of Yahweh unto him, and said to him, What doest thou here, Elijah?

10 And he saidVery jealous, have I been, for Yahweh, God of hosts, because the sons of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thine altars, have they thrown down, thy prophets, also have they slain with the sword,and, I alone, am left, and they have sought my life, to take it.

11 And he saidGo forth to-morrow, and stand in the mountain, before Yahweh. And lo! Yahweh, passing by, and a great and strong windrending the mountains, and breaking in pieces the crags, before Yahweh, Not, in the wind, was, Yahweh,And, after the wind, an, earthquake, Not, in the earthquake, was, Yahweh;

12 And, after the earthquake, a, fire, Not, in the fire, was, Yahweh,And, after the fire, the voice of a gentle whisper.

13 And it came to pass, when Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went forth, and stood at the entrance of the cave,and lo! unto him, a voice; and it saidWhat doest thou here, Elijah?

14 And he saidVery jealous, have I been, for Yahweh, God of hosts, because the sons of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thine altars, have they thrown down, thy prophets also, have they slain with the sword,and, I alone, am left, and they rove sought my life, to take it.

15 And Yahweh said unto him, Go, return to thy way, towards the wilderness of Damascus,and, when thou enterest, then shalt thou anoint Hazael to be king over Syria;

16 And, Jehu son of Minshi, shalt thou anoint to be king over Israel,and, Elisha son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah, shalt thou anoint to be prophet in thy stead:

17 Then shall it come to pass, thathim that escapeth the sword of Hazael, shall, Jehu, slay,and, him that escapeth the sword of Jehu, shall, Elisha, slay;

18 Yet will I leave remaining in Israel, seven thousand,all knees which have not bowed to Baal, and all mouths which have not kissed to him.

19 So he departed from thence, and found Elisha son of Shaphat, as he was plowing, with twelve yoke of oxen before him, he being with the twelfth,so Elijah crossed over unto him, and cast his mantle towards him;

20 and he left the oxen, and ran after Elijah, and saidLet me, I pray thee, kiss my father and my mother, that I may follow thee. And he said unto him,Go, turn back, for what have I done to thee?

21 So he turned back from following him, and took the yoke of oxen, and sacrificed them, and, with the implements of the oxen, boiled their flesh, and gave unto the people, and they did eat,then he arose, and followed Elijah, and ministered unto him.
