1 O povo de Israel diz:

— Venham, voltemos todos para Deus, o Senhor. Ele nos feriu, mas com certeza vai nos curar; ele nos castigou, mas certamente nos perdoará. 2 Daqui a uns dois ou três dias, no máximo, ele nos dará novas forças e nos porá de pé, e nós sempre faremos a sua vontade. 3 Vamos nos dedicar mais e mais ao Senhor! Tão certo como nasce o sol, ele virá nos ajudar; virá tão certamente como vêm as chuvas da primavera, que regam a terra.

4 Mas o Senhor Deus responde:

— O que é que vou fazer com você, Israel? E com você, Judá, o que é que eu faço? Pois o amor de vocês é tão passageiro como a cerração ao nascer do sol; é como o orvalho, que seca logo de manhã. 5 Foi por isso que mandei os meus profetas anunciar que eu vou castigar e matar vocês. E o que exijo de vocês é claro como a luz do sol. 6 Eu quero que vocês me amem e não que me ofereçam sacrifícios; em vez de me trazer ofertas queimadas, eu prefiro que o meu povo me obedeça.

7 — Mas na cidade de Adã o meu povo quebrou a aliança que fiz com ele e ali foi infiel a mim. 8 Gileade é uma cidade cheia de malfeitores e assassinos. 9 Os sacerdotes são como assaltantes que esperam escondidos para roubar os outros. Na estrada que vai para Siquém eles matam e cometem crimes horrorosos. 10 Tenho visto uma coisa horrível na terra de Israel: o meu povo adora ídolos e por isso está impuro.

11 — E já marquei o dia em que vou castigar também o povo de Judá.

1 Come, and let us return unto Yahweh! for, he, hath torn, that he might heal us,smitten, that he might bind us up.

2 He will bring us to life, after two days,on the third day, will he raise us up, that we may live before him.

3 Then let us knowlet us press on to knowYahweh, Like the dawn, is his coming forth assured,that he may come like a down-pour upon us, like the harvest-rain,

4 What can I do unto thee, O Ephraim? What can I do unto thee, O Judah? for, your lovingkindness, is like a morning cloud, yea, like the dew, early departing!

5 For this cause, have I hewn them in pieces by the prophets, I have slain them by the sayings of my mouth,and, my justice, as a light goeth forth.

6 For, lovingkindness, I desired, and not sacrifice,and the knowledge of God, more than ascending-offerings.

7 But, they, like Adam, have transgressed a covenant,There, have they dealt treacherously with me.

8 Gilead, is a city of workers of iniquity,tracked with blood.

9 And, like liers in wait for a man, in troops, is a band of priests, on the road, will they murder towards Shechem,because, a shameful deed, they have done.

10 In the house of Israel, have I seen a horrible thing,there, the unchastity of Ephraim, defiled is Israel.

11 Judah too! a harvest is appointed for thee,in that I will bring back the captivity of my people.
