1 "Se você voltar, ó Israel, volte para mim", diz o Senhor. "Se você afastar para longe de minha vista os seus ídolos detestáveis, e não se desviar,2 se você jurar pelo nome do Senhor, com fidelidade, justiça e retidão, então as nações serão por ele abençoadas e nele se gloriarão. "3 Assim diz o Senhor ao povo de Judá e de Jerusalém: "Lavrem seus campos não arados e não semeiem entre espinhos.4 Purifiquem-se para o Senhor, sejam fiéis à aliança, homens de Judá e habitantes de Jerusalém! Se não fizerem isso, a minha ira se acenderá e queimará como fogo, por causa do mal que vocês fizeram; queimará e ninguém conseguirá apagá-la.5 "Anunciem em Judá! Proclamem em Jerusalém: ‘Toquem a trombeta por toda esta terra! ’ Gritem bem alto e digam: ‘Reúnam-se! Fujamos para as cidades fortificadas! ’6 Ergam o sinal indicando Sião. Fujam sem demora em busca de abrigo! Porque do Norte eu estou trazendo desgraça, uma grande destruição".7 Um leão saiu da sua toca, um destruidor de nações se pôs a caminho. Ele saiu de onde vive para arrasar a sua terra. Suas cidades ficarão em ruínas e sem habitantes.8 Por isso, ponham vestes de lamento, chorem e gritem, pois o fogo da ira do Senhor não se desviou de nós.9 "Naquele dia", diz o Senhor, "o rei e os seus oficiais perderão a coragem, os sacerdotes ficarão horrorizados e os profetas, perplexos. "10 Então eu disse: "Ah, Soberano Senhor, como enganaste completamente este povo e a Jerusalém dizendo: ‘Vocês terão paz’, quando a espada está em nossa garganta".11 Naquela época será dito a este povo e a Jerusalém: "Um vento escaldante, que vem das dunas do deserto, sopra na direção da minha filha, do meu povo, mas não para peneirar nem para limpar.12 É um vento forte demais, que vem da minha parte. Agora eu pronunciarei as minhas sentenças contra eles".13 Vejam! Ele avança como as nuvens; os seus carros de guerra são como um furacão e os seus cavalos são mais velozes do que as águias. Ai de nós! Estamos perdidos!14 Ó Jerusalém, lave o mal do seu coração para que você seja salva. Até quando você vai acolher projetos malignos no íntimo?15 Ouve-se uma voz proclamando desde Dã, desde os montes de Efraim se anuncia calamidade.16 "Relatem isso a esta nação e proclamem contra Jerusalém: ‘Um exército inimigo está vindo de uma terra distante, dando seu grito de guerra contra as cidades de Judá.17 Eles a cercam como homens que guardam um campo, pois ela se rebelou contra mim’ ", declara o Senhor.18 "A sua própria conduta e as suas ações trouxeram isso sobre você. Como é amargo este seu castigo! Ele atinge até o seu coração! "19 Ah, minha angústia, minha angústia! Eu me contorço de dor. Ó paredes do meu coração! O meu coração dispara dentro de mim; não posso ficar calado. Ouvi o som da trombeta, ouvi o grito de guerra.20 Um desastre depois do outro; toda a minha terra foi devastada. Num instante as minhas tendas foram destruídas, e os meus abrigos num momento.21 Até quando verei o sinal levantado e ouvirei o som da trombeta?22 "O meu povo é tolo, eles não me conhecem. São crianças insensatas que nada compreendem. São hábeis para praticar o mal, mas não sabem fazer o bem. "23 Olhei para a terra e ela era sem forma e vazia; e para os céus, e a sua luz tinha desaparecido.24 Olhei para os montes e eles estavam tremendo; todas as colinas estavam oscilando.25 Olhei, e não havia mais gente; todas as aves do céu tinham fugido em revoada.26 Olhei, e a terra fértil era deserto; todas as suas cidades estavam em ruínas por causa do Senhor, por causa do fogo da sua ira.27 Assim diz o Senhor: "Toda esta terra ficará devastada, embora eu não vá destruí-la completamente.28 Por causa disso, a terra ficará de luto e o céu, em cima, se escurecerá; porque eu falei, e não me arrependi, decidi, e não voltei atrás".29 Quando se ouvem os cavaleiros e os flecheiros, todos os habitantes da cidade fogem. Alguns vão para o meio dos arbustos; outros escalam as rochas. Todas as cidades são abandonadas, e ficam sem habitantes.30 O que você está fazendo, ó cidade devastada? Por que se veste de vermelho e se enfeita com jóias de ouro? Por que você passa sombra nos olhos? Você se embeleza em vão, pois os seus amantes a desprezam e querem tirar-lhe a vida.31 Ouvi um grito, como de mulher em trabalho de parto, como a agonia de uma mulher ao dar à luz o primeiro filho. É o grito da cidade de Sião, que está ofegante e estende as mãos, dizendo: "Ai de mim! Estou desfalecendo. Minha vida está nas mãos de assassinos! "

1 If thou will return, O Israel, says LORD, if thou will return to me, and if thou will put away thine abominations out of my sight, then thou shall not be removed.2 And thou shall swear, As LORD lives, in truth, in justice, and in righteousness. And the nations shall bless themselves in him, and in him they shall glory.3 For thus says LORD to the men of Judah and to Jerusalem, Break up your fallow ground, and sow not among thorns.4 Circumcise yourselves to LORD, and take away the foreskins of your heart, ye men of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem, lest my wrath go forth like fire, and burn so that none can quench it, because of the evil of your doings.5 Declare ye in Judah, and publish in Jerusalem, and say, Blow ye the trumpet in the land. Cry aloud and say, Assemble yourselves, and let us go into the fortified cities.6 Set up a standard toward Zion. Flee for safety, do not stay. For I will bring evil from the north, and a great destruction.7 A lion has gone up from his thicket, and a destroyer of nations. He is on his way, he has gone forth from his place, to make thy land desolate, that thy cities be laid waste, without inhabitant.8 For this gird you with sackcloth, lament and wail, for the fierce anger of LORD is not turned back from us.9 And it shall come to pass at that day, says LORD, that the heart of the king shall perish, and the heart of the rulers, and the priests shall be astonished, and the prophets shall wonder.10 Then I said, Ah, lord LORD! Surely thou have greatly deceived this people and Jerusalem, saying, Ye shall have peace, whereas the sword reaches to the life.11 At that time it shall be said to this people and to Jerusalem, A hot wind from the bare heights in the wilderness toward the daughter of my people, not to winnow, nor to cleanse,12 a full wind from these shall come for me. Now I will also utter judgments against them.13 Behold, he shall come up as clouds, and his chariots as the whirlwind. His horses are swifter than eagles. Woe to us! For we are ruined.14 O Jerusalem, wash thy heart from wickedness, that thou may be saved. How long shall thine evil thoughts lodge within thee?15 For a voice declares from Dan, and publishes evil from the hills of Ephraim:16 Make ye mention to the nations. Behold, publish against Jerusalem, [that] watchers come from a far country, and give out their voice against the cities of Judah.17 They are as keepers of a field against her round about, because she has been rebellious against me, says LORD.18 Thy way and thy doings have procured these things to thee. This is thy wickedness, for it is bitter, for it reaches to thy heart.19 My anguish, my anguish! I am pained at my very heart. My heart is disquieted in me. I cannot hold my peace, because thou have heard, O my soul, the sound of the trumpet, the alarm of war.20 Destruction upon destruction is cried, for the whole land is laid waste. Suddenly my tents are destroyed, [and] my curtains in a moment.21 How long shall I see the standard, and hear the sound of the trumpet?22 For my people are foolish. They do not know me. They are sottish sons, and they have no understanding. They are wise to do evil, but to do good they have no knowledge.23 I beheld the earth, and, lo, it was waste and void, and the heavens, and they had no light.24 I beheld the mountains, and, lo, they trembled, and all the hills moved to and fro.25 I beheld, and, lo, there was no man, and all the birds of the heavens were fled.26 I beheld, and, lo, the fruitful field was a wilderness, and all the cities thereof were broken down at the presence of LORD, [and] before his fierce anger.27 For thus says LORD: The whole land shall be a desolation, yet I will not make a full end.28 For this the earth shall mourn, and the heavens above be black, because I have spoken it, I have purposed it, and I have not relented, nor will I turn back from it.29 Every city flees for the noise of the horsemen and bowmen. They go into the thickets, and climb up upon the rocks. Every city is forsaken, and not a man dwells in it.30 And thou, when thou are made desolate, what will thou do? Though thou clothe thyself with scarlet, though thou deck thee with ornaments of gold, though thou enlarge thine eyes with paint, in vain thou make thyself fair. [Thy] lover31 For I have heard a voice as of a woman in travail, the anguish as of her who brings forth her first child, the voice of the daughter of Zion, who gasps for breath, who spreads her hands, [saying], Woe is me now! For my soul faints
