1 Esta é a mensagem do Senhor que veio ao profeta Jeremias acerca das nações:2 Acerca do Egito: Esta é a mensagem contra o exército do rei do Egito, o faraó Neco, que foi derrotado em Carquemis, junto ao rio Eufrates, por Nabucodonosor, rei da Babilônia, no quarto ano do reinado de Jeoaquim, filho de Josias, rei de Judá:3 "Preparem seus escudos, os grandes e os pequenos, e marchem para a batalha!4 Selem os cavalos e montem! Tomem posição e coloquem o capacete! Passem óleo na ponta de suas lanças e vistam a armadura!5 Mas o que vejo? Eles estão apavorados, estão se retirando, seus guerreiros estão derrotados. Fogem às pressas, sem olhar para trás; há terror por todos os lados", declara o Senhor.6 "O ágil não consegue fugir, nem o forte escapar. No norte, junto ao rio Eufrates, eles tropeçam e caem.7 "Quem é aquele que se levanta como o Nilo, como rios de águas agitadas?8 O Egito se levanta como o Nilo, como rios de águas agitadas. Ele diz: ‘Eu me levantarei e cobrirei a terra; destruirei as cidades e os seus habitantes’.9 Ao ataque, cavalos! Avancem, carros de guerra! Marchem em frente, guerreiros! Homens da Etiópia e da Líbia, que levam escudos; homens da Lídia, que empunham o arco!10 Mas aquele dia pertence ao Soberano, ao Senhor dos Exércitos. Será um dia de vingança, para vingar-se dos seus adversários. A espada devorará até saciar-se, até satisfazer sua sede de sangue. Porque o Soberano, o Senhor dos Exércitos, fará um banquete na terra do norte, junto ao rio Eufrates.11 "Suba a Gileade em busca de bálsamo, ó virgem, filha do Egito! Você multiplica remédios em vão; não há cura para você.12 As nações ouviram da tua humilhação; os seus gritos encheram a terra, quando um guerreiro tropeçou noutro guerreiro e ambos caíram. "13 Esta é a mensagem que o Senhor falou ao profeta Jeremias acerca da vinda de Nabucodonosor, rei da Babilônia para atacar o Egito:14 "Anunciem isto no Egito e proclamem-no em Migdol; proclamem-no também em Mênfis e em Tafnes: ‘Assumam posição! Preparem-se! Porque a espada devora aqueles que estão ao seu redor’.15 Por que o deus Ápis fugiu? O seu touro não resistiu, porque o Senhor o derrubou.16 Tropeçam e caem, caem uns sobre os outros. Eles dizem: ‘Levantem-se. Vamos voltar para nosso próprio povo e para nossa terra natal, para longe da espada do opressor.17 O faraó, rei do Egito, é barulho e nada mais! 1 The word of LORD which came to Jeremiah the prophet concerning the nations.2 Of Egypt, concerning the army of Pharaoh-neco king of Egypt, which was by the river Euphrates in Carchemish, which Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon smote in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah:3 Prepare ye the buckler and shield, and draw near to battle.4 Harness the horses, and get up, ye horsemen, and stand forth with your helmets. Furbish the spears. Put on the coats of mail.5 Why have I seen it? They are dismayed and have turned backward. And their mighty ones are beaten down, and have fled apace, and do not look back. Terror is on every side, says LORD.6 Let not the swift flee away, nor the mighty man escape. In the north by the river Euphrates they have stumbled and fallen.7 Who is this that rises up like the Nile, whose waters toss themselves like the rivers?8 Egypt rises up like the Nile, and his waters toss themselves like the rivers. And he says, I will rise up. I will cover the earth. I will destroy cities and the inhabitants thereof.9 Go up, ye horses, and rage, ye chariots. And let the mighty men go forth: Cush and Put, who handle the shield, and the Ludim, who handle and bend the bow.10 For that day is [a day] of the Lord, LORD of hosts, a day of vengeance, that he may avenge him of his adversaries. And the sword shall devour and be satiate, and shall drink its fill of their blood, for the Lord, LORD of hosts, has11 Go up into Gilead, and take balm, O virgin daughter of Egypt. In vain do thou use many medicines; there is no healing for thee.12 The nations have heard of thy shame, and the earth is full of thy cry. For the mighty man has stumbled against the mighty; they are fallen, both of them together.13 The word that LORD spoke to Jeremiah the prophet, how that Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon should come and smite the land of Egypt.14 Declare ye in Egypt, and publish in Migdol, and publish in Memphis and in Tahpanhes. Say ye, Stand forth, and prepare thee, for the sword has devoured round about thee.15 Why are thy strong ones swept away? They stood not, because LORD drove them.16 He made many to stumble, yea, they fell one upon another. And they said, Arise, and let us go again to our own people, and to the land of our nativity, from the oppressing sword.17 They cried there, Pharaoh king of Egypt is but a noise. He has let the appointed time pass by.18 As I live, says the King, whose name is LORD of hosts, surely like Tabor among the mountains, and like Carmel by the sea, so shall he come.19 O thou daughter who dwells in Egypt, prepare thyself to go into captivity. For Memphis shall become a desolation, and shall be burnt up, without inhabitant.20 Egypt is a very fair heifer, [but] destruction out of the north has come, it has come.21 Also her hired men in the midst of her are like calves of the stall, for they also are turned back. They have fled away together. They did not stand, for the day of their calamity has come upon them, the time of their visitation.22 The sound thereof shall go like the serpent, for they shall march with an army, and come against her with axes, as hewers of wood.23 They shall cut down her forest, says LORD, though it cannot be searched because they are more than the locusts, and are innumerable.24 The daughter of Egypt shall be put to shame. She shall be delivered into the hand of the people of the north.25 LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, says, Behold, I will punish Amon of No, and Pharaoh, and Egypt, with her gods, and her kings, even Pharaoh, and those who trust in him.26 And I will deliver them into the hand of those who seek their lives, and into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, and into the hand of his servants. And afterwards it shall be inhabited, as in the days of old, says LORD.27 But fear thou not, O Jacob my servant, nor be dismayed, O Israel. For, lo, I will save thee from afar, and thy seed from the land of their captivity. And Jacob shall return, and shall be quiet and at ease, and none shall make him a28 Fear thou not, O Jacob my servant, says LORD, for I am with thee. For I will make a full end of all the nations where I have driven thee, but I will not make a full end of thee. But I will correct thee in measure, and will in no wa
