1 Estes são os provérbios de Salomão, filho de Davi, rei de Israel.2 Eles ajudarão a experimentar a sabedoria e a disciplina; a compreender as palavras que dão entendimento;3 a viver com disciplina e sensatez, fazendo o que é justo, direito e correto;4 ajudarão a dar prudência aos inexperientes e conhecimento e bom senso aos jovens.5 Se o sábio der ouvidos, aumentará seu conhecimento, e quem tem discernimento obterá orientação6 para compreender provérbios e parábolas, ditados e enigmas dos sábios.7 O temor do Senhor é o princípio do conhecimento, mas os insensatos desprezam a sabedoria e a disciplina.8 Ouça, meu filho, a instrução de seu pai e não despreze o ensino de sua mãe.9 Eles serão um enfeite para a sua cabeça, um adorno para o seu pescoço.10 Meu filho, se os maus tentarem seduzi-lo, não ceda!11 Se disserem: "Venha conosco; fiquemos de tocaia para matar alguém, vamos divertir-nos armando emboscada contra quem de nada suspeita!12 Vamos engoli-los vivos, como a sepultura engole os mortos; vamos destruí-los inteiros, como são destruídos os que descem à cova;13 acharemos todo tipo de objetos valiosos e encheremos as nossas casas com o que roubarmos;14 junte-se ao nosso bando; dividiremos em partes iguais tudo o que conseguirmos! "15 Meu filho, não vá pela vereda dessa gente! Afaste os pés do caminho que eles seguem,16 pois os pés deles correm para fazer o mal, estão sempre prontos para derramar sangue.17 Assim como é inútil estender a rede se as aves o observam,18 também esses homens não percebem que fazem tocaia contra a própria vida; armam emboscadas contra eles mesmos!19 Tal é o caminho de todos os gananciosos; quem assim procede se destrói.20 A sabedoria clama em voz alta nas ruas, ergue a voz nas praças públicas;21 nas esquinas das ruas barulhentas ela clama, nas portas da cidade faz o seu discurso:22 "Até quando vocês, inexperientes, irão contentar-se com a sua inexperiência? Vocês, zombadores, até quando terão prazer na zombaria? E vocês, tolos, até quando desprezarão o conhecimento?23 Se acatarem a minha repreensão, eu lhes darei um espírito de sabedoria e lhes revelarei os meus pensamentos.24 Vocês, porém, rejeitaram o meu convite; ninguém se importou quando estendi minha mão!25 Visto que desprezaram totalmente o meu conselho e não quiseram aceitar a minha repreensão,26 eu, de minha parte, vou rir-me da sua desgraça; zombarei quando o que temem se abater sobre vocês,27 quando aquilo que temem abater-se sobre vocês como uma tempestade, quando a desgraça os atingir como um vendaval, quando a angústia e a dor os dominarem.28 "Então vocês me chamarão, mas não responderei; procurarão por mim, mas não me encontrarão.29 Visto que desprezaram o conhecimento e recusaram o temor do Senhor,30 não quiseram aceitar o meu conselho e fizeram pouco caso da minha advertência,31 comerão do fruto da sua conduta e se fartarão de suas próprias maquinações.32 Pois a inconstância dos inexperientes os matará, e a falsa segurança dos tolos os destruirá;33 mas quem me ouvir viverá em segurança e estará tranqüilo, sem temer nenhum mal".

1 The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel:2 To know wisdom and instruction; To discern the words of understanding;3 To receive instruction in wise dealing, In righteousness and justice and equity;4 To give prudence to the simple, To the young man knowledge and discretion:5 That the wise man may hear, and increase in learning; And that the man of understanding may attain to sound counsels:6 To understand a proverb, and a figure, The words of the wise, and their dark sayings.7 The fear of Yahweh is the beginning of knowledge; [But] the foolish despise wisdom and instruction.8 My son, hear the instruction of your father, And don't forsake the law of your mother:9 For they will be a chaplet of grace to your head, And chains about your neck.10 My son, if sinners entice you, Do not consent.11 If they say, Come with us, Let us lay in wait for blood; Let us lurk secretly for the innocent without cause;12 Let us swallow them up alive as Sheol, And whole, as those who go down into the pit;13 We will find all precious substance; We will fill our houses with spoil;14 You will cast your lot among us; We will all have one bag:15 My son, don't walk in the way with them; Refrain your foot from their path:16 []17 For in vain is the net spread In the sight of any bird:18 And these lay wait for their own blood; They lurk secretly for their own lives.19 So are the ways of everyone who is greedy of gain; It takes away the life of its owners.20 Wisdom cries aloud in the street; She utters her voice in the broad places;21 She cries in the most noisy places; At the entrance of the gates, In the city, she utters her words:22 How long, you{+} simple ones, will you{+} love simplicity? And scoffers delight themselves in scoffing, And fools hate knowledge?23 Turn{+} at my reproof: Look, I will cause my spirit to gush out on you{+} I will make my words known to you{+}.24 Because I have called, and you{+} have refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man has regarded;25 But you{+} have set at nothing all my counsel, And would have none of my reproof:26 I also will laugh in [the day of] your{+} calamity; I will mock when your{+} fear comes;27 When your{+} fear comes as a storm, And your{+} calamity comes on as a whirlwind; When distress and anguish come upon you{+}.28 Then they will call on me, but I will not answer; They will seek me diligently, but they will not find me:29 For they hated knowledge, And did not choose the fear of Yahweh:30 They didn't want my counsel; They despised all my reproof.31 Therefore they will eat of the fruit of their own way, And be filled with their own devices.32 For the backsliding of the simple will slay them, And the careless ease of fools will destroy them.33 But whoever harkens to me will stay securely, And will be quiet without fear of evil.
