1 Naquele mesmo dia Jesus saiu de casa e assentou-se à beira-mar.2 Reuniu-se ao seu redor uma multidão tão grande que ele teve que entrar num barco e assentar-se nele, enquanto todo o povo ficou na praia.3 Então lhes falou muitas coisas por parábolas, dizendo: "O semeador saiu a semear.4 Enquanto lançava a semente, parte dela caiu à beira do caminho, e as aves vieram e a comeram.5 Parte dela caiu em terreno pedregoso, onde não havia muita terra; e logo brotou, porque a terra não era profunda.6 Mas quando saiu o sol, as plantas se queimaram e secaram, porque não tinham raiz.7 Outra parte caiu entre espinhos, que cresceram e sufocaram as plantas.8 Outra ainda caiu em boa terra, deu boa colheita, a cem, sessenta e trinta por um.9 Aquele que tem ouvidos para ouvir, ouça! "10 Os discípulos aproximaram-se dele e perguntaram: "Por que falas ao povo por parábolas? "11 Ele respondeu: "A vocês foi dado o conhecimento dos mistérios do Reino dos céus, mas a eles não.12 A quem tem será dado, e este terá em grande quantidade. De quem não tem, até o que tem lhe será tirado.13 Por essa razão eu lhes falo por parábolas: ‘Porque vendo, eles não vêem e, ouvindo, não ouvem nem entendem’.14 Neles se cumpre a profecia de Isaías: ‘Ainda que estejam sempre ouvindo, vocês nunca entenderão; ainda que estejam sempre vendo, jamais perceberão.15 Pois o coração deste povo se tornou insensível; de má vontade ouviram com os seus ouvidos, e fecharam os seus olhos. Se assim não fosse, poderiam ver com os olhos, ouvir com os ouvidos, entender com o coração e converter-se, e eu os curaria’.16 Mas, felizes são os olhos de vocês, porque vêem; e os ouvidos de vocês, porque ouvem.17 Pois eu lhes digo a verdade: Muitos profetas e justos desejaram ver o que vocês estão vendo, mas não viram, e ouvir o que vocês estão ouvindo, mas não ouviram.18 "Portanto, ouçam o que significa a parábola do semeador:19 Quando alguém ouve a mensagem do Reino e não a entende, o Maligno vem e lhe arranca o que foi semeado em seu coração. Este é o que foi semeado à beira do caminho.20 Quanto ao que foi semeado em terreno pedregoso, este é aquele que ouve a palavra e logo a recebe com alegria.21 Todavia, visto que não tem raiz em si mesmo, permanece por pouco tempo. Quando surge alguma tribulação ou perseguição por causa da palavra, logo a abandona.22 Quanto ao que foi semeado entre os espinhos, este é aquele que ouve a palavra, mas a preocupação desta vida e o engano das riquezas a sufocam, tornando-a infrutífera.23 E, finalmente, o que foi semeado em boa terra: este é aquele que ouve a palavra e a entende, e dá uma colheita de cem, sessenta e trinta por um".24 Jesus lhes contou outra parábola, dizendo: "O Reino dos céus é como um homem que semeou boa semente em seu campo.25 Mas enquanto todos dormiam, veio o seu inimigo e semeou o joio no meio do trigo e se foi.26 Quando o trigo brotou e formou espigas, o joio também apareceu.27 "Os servos do dono do campo dirigiram-se a ele e disseram: ‘O senhor não semeou boa semente em seu campo? Então, de onde veio o joio? ’28 " ‘Um inimigo fez isso’, respondeu ele. "Os servos lhe perguntaram: ‘O senhor quer que vamos tirá-lo? ’29 "Ele respondeu: ‘Não, porque, ao tirar o joio, vocês poderão arrancar com ele o trigo.30 Deixem que cresçam juntos até à colheita. Então direi aos encarregados da colheita: Juntem primeiro o joio e amarrem-no em feixes para ser queimado; depois juntem o trigo e guardem-no no meu celeiro’ ".31 E contou-lhes outra parábola: "O Reino dos céus é como um grão de mostarda que um homem plantou em seu campo.32 Embora seja a menor dentre todas as sementes, quando cresce torna-se a maior das hortaliças e se transforma numa árvore, de modo que as aves do céu vêm fazer os seus ninhos em seus ramos".33 E contou-lhes ainda outra parábola: "O Reino dos céus é como o fermento que uma mulher tomou e misturou com uma grande quantidade de farinha, e toda a massa ficou fermentada".34 Jesus falou todas estas coisas à multidão por parábolas. Nada lhes dizia sem usar alguma parábola,35 cumprindo-se, assim, o que fora dito pelo profeta: "Abrirei minha boca em parábolas, Proclamarei coisas ocultas Desde a criação do mundo".36 Então ele deixou a multidão e foi para casa. Seus discípulos aproximaram-se dele e disseram: "Explica-nos a parábola do joio no campo".37 Ele respondeu: "Aquele que semeou a boa semente é o Filho do homem.38 O campo é o mundo, e a boa semente são os filhos do Reino. O joio são os filhos do Maligno,39 e o inimigo que o semeia é o diabo. A colheita é o fim desta era, e os encarregados da colheita são anjos.40 "Assim como o joio é colhido e queimado no fogo, assim também acontecerá no fim desta era.41 O Filho do homem enviará os seus anjos, e eles tirarão do seu Reino tudo o que faz tropeçar e todos os que praticam o mal.42 Eles os lançarão na fornalha ardente, onde haverá choro e ranger de dentes.43 Então os justos brilharão como o sol no Reino do seu Pai. Aquele que tem ouvidos, ouça".44 "O Reino dos céus é como um tesouro escondido num campo. Certo homem, tendo-o encontrado, escondeu-o de novo e, então, cheio de alegria, foi, vendeu tudo o que tinha e comprou aquele campo.45 "O Reino dos céus também é como um negociante que procura pérolas preciosas.46 Encontrando uma pérola de grande valor, foi, vendeu tudo o que tinha e a comprou".47 "O Reino dos céus é ainda como uma rede que é lançada ao mar e apanha toda sorte de peixes.48 Quando está cheia, os pescadores a puxam para a praia. Então se assentam e juntam os peixes bons em cestos, mas jogam fora os ruins.49 Assim acontecerá no fim desta era. Os anjos virão, separarão os perversos dos justos50 e lançarão aqueles na fornalha ardente, onde haverá choro e ranger de dentes".51 Então perguntou Jesus: "Vocês entenderam todas essas coisas? " "Sim", responderam eles.52 Ele lhes disse: "Por isso, todo mestre da lei instruído quanto ao Reino dos céus é como o dono de uma casa que tira do seu tesouro coisas novas e coisas velhas".53 Tendo terminado de contar estas parábolas, Jesus saiu dali.54 Chegando à sua cidade, começou a ensinar o povo na sinagoga. Todos ficaram admirados e perguntavam: "De onde lhe vêm esta sabedoria e estes poderes miraculosos?55 Não é este o filho do carpinteiro? O nome de sua mãe não é Maria, e não são seus irmãos Tiago, José, Simão e Judas?56 Não estão conosco todas as suas irmãs? De onde, pois, ele obteve todas essas coisas? "57 E ficavam escandalizados por causa dele. Mas Jesus lhes disse: "Só em sua própria terra e em sua própria casa é que um profeta não tem honra".58 E não realizou muitos milagres ali, por causa da incredulidade deles.

1 That same day Jesus had left the house and was sitting on the shore of the Lake,2 when a vast multitude of people crowded round Him. He therefore went on board a boat and sat there, while all the people stood on the shore.3 He then spoke many things to them in figurative language. »The sower goes out,« He said, »to sow.4 As he sows, some of the seed falls by the way-side, and the birds come and peck it up.5 Some falls on rocky ground, where it has but scanty soil. It quickly shows itself above ground, because it has no depth of earth;6 but when the sun is risen, it is scorched by the heat, and through having no root it withers up.7 Some falls among the thorns; but the thorns spring up and stifle it.8 But a portion falls upon good ground, and gives a return, some a hundred for one, some sixty, some thirty.9 Listen, every one who has ears!«10 (And His disciples came and asked Him, »Why do you speak to them in figurative language?«11 »Because,« He replied, »while to you it is granted to know the secrets of the Kingdom of the Heavens, to them it is not.12 For whoever has, to him more shall be given, and he shall have abundance; but whoever has not, from him even what he has shall be taken away.13 I speak to them in figurative language for this reason, that while looking they do not see, and while hearing they neither hear nor understand.14 And in regard to them the prophecy of Isaiah is receiving signal fulfilment: »`You will hear and hear and by no means understand, and you will look and look and by no means see.15 For this people's mind is stupefied, their hearing has become dull, and their eyes they have closed; to prevent their ever seeing with their eyes, or hearing with their ears, or understanding with their minds, and turning back, so that I might heal them.'«16 »But as for you, blessed are your eyes, for they see, and your ears, for they hear.«17 For I solemnly tell you that many Prophets and holy men have longed to see the sights you see, and have not seen them, and to hear the words you hear, and have not heard them.18 »To you then I will explain the parable of the Sower.«19 When a man hears the Message concerning the Kingdom and does not understand it, the Evil one comes and catches away what has been sown in his heart. This is he who has received the seed by the road-side.20 He who has received the seed on the rocky ground is the man who hears the Message and immediately receives it with joy.21 It has struck no root, however, within him. He continues for a time, but when suffering comes, or persecution, because of the Message, he at once stumbles and falls.22 He who has received the seed among the thorns is the man who hears the Message, but the cares of the present age and the delusions of riches quite stifle the Message, and it becomes unfruitful.23 But he who has received the seed on good ground is he who hears and understands. Such hearers give a return, and yield one a hundred for one, another sixty, another thirty.24 Another parable He put before them. »The Kingdom of the Heavens,« He said, »may be compared to a man who has sown good seed in his field,25 but during the night his enemy comes, and over the first seed he sows darnel among the wheat, and goes away.26 But when the blade shoots up and the grain is formed, then appears the darnel also.27 So the farmer's men come and ask him, »`Sir, was it not good seed that you sowed on your land? Where then does the darnel come from?'28 `Some enemy has done this,' he said. »`Shall we go, and collect it?' the men inquire.29 »`No,' he replied, `for fear that while collecting the darnel you should at the same time root up the wheat with it.30 Leave both to grow together until the harvest, and at harvest-time I will direct the reapers, Collect the darnel first, and make it up into bundles to burn it, but bring all the wheat into my barn.'«31 Another parable He put before them. »The Kingdom of the Heavens,« He said, »is like a mustard-seed, which a man takes and sows in his ground.32 It is the smallest of all seeds, and yet when full-grown it is larger than any herb and forms a tree, so that the birds come and build in its branches.«33 Another parable He spoke to them. »The Kingdom of the Heavens,« He said, »is like yeast which a woman takes and buries in a bushel of flour, for it to work there till the whole mass has risen.«34 All this Jesus spoke to the people in figurative language, and except in figurative language He spoke nothing to them,35 in fulfilment of the saying of the Prophet, »I will open my mouth in figurative language, I will utter things kept hidden since the creation of all things.«36 When He had dismissed the people and had returned to the house, His disciples came to Him with the request, »Explain to us the parable of the darnel sown in the field.«37 »The sower of the good seed,« He replied, »is the Son of Man;38 the field is the world; the good seed–these are the sons of the Kingdom; the darnel, the sons of the Evil one.39 The enemy who sows the darnel is the Devil; the harvest is the Close of the Age; the reapers are the angels.40 As then the darnel is collected together and burnt up with fire, so will it be at the Close of the Age.41 The Son of Man will commission His angels, and they will gather out of His Kingdom all causes of sin and all who violate His laws;42 and these they will throw into the fiery furnace. There will be the weeping aloud and the gnashing of teeth.43 Then will the righteous shine out like the sun in their Father's Kingdom. Listen, every one who has ears!44 »The Kingdom of the Heavens is like treasure buried in the open country, which a man finds, but buries again, and, in his joy about it, goes and sells all he has and buys that piece of ground.«45 »Again the Kingdom of the Heavens is like a jewel merchant who is in quest of choice pearls.«46 He finds one most costly pearl; he goes away; and though it costs all he has, he buys it.47 »Again the Kingdom of the Heavens is like a draw-net let down into the sea, which encloses fish of all sorts.«48 When full, they haul it up on the beach, and sit down and collect the good fish in baskets, while the worthless they throw away.49 So will it be at the Close of the Age. The angels will go forth and separate the wicked from among the righteous,50 and will throw them into the fiery furnace. There will be the weeping aloud and the gnashing of teeth.«51 »Have you understood all this?« He asked. »Yes,« they said.52 »Therefore,« He said, »remember that every Scribe well trained for the Kingdom of the Heavens is like a householder who brings out of his storehouse new things and old.«53 Jesus concluded this series of parables and then departed.54 And He came into His own country and proceeded to teach in their synagogue, so that they were filled with astonishment and exclaimed, »Where did he obtain such wisdom, and these wondrous powers?55 Is not this the carpenter's son? Is not his mother called Mary? And are not his brothers, James, Joseph, Simon and Judah?56 And his sisters–are they not all living here among us? Where then did he get all this?«57 So they turned angrily away from Him. But Jesus said to them, »There is no prophet left without honour except in his own country and among his own family.«58 And He performed but few mighty deeds there because of their want of faith.
