1 Jesus lhes falou novamente por parábolas, dizendo:2 "O Reino dos céus é como um rei que preparou um banquete de casamento para seu filho.3 Enviou seus servos aos que tinham sido convidados para o banquete, dizendo-lhes que viessem; mas eles não quiseram vir.4 "De novo enviou outros servos e disse: ‘Digam aos que foram convidados que preparei meu banquete: meus bois e meus novilhos gordos foram abatidos, e tudo está preparado. Venham para o banquete de casamento! ’5 "Mas eles não lhes deram atenção e saíram, um para o seu campo, outro para os seus negócios.6 Os restantes, agarrando os servos, maltrataram-nos e os mataram.7 O rei ficou irado e, enviando o seu exército, destruiu aqueles assassinos e queimou a cidade deles.8 "Então disse a seus servos: ‘O banquete de casamento está pronto, mas os meus convidados não eram dignos.9 Vão às esquinas e convidem para o banquete todos os que vocês encontrarem’.10 Então os servos saíram para as ruas e reuniram todas as pessoas que puderam encontrar, gente boa e gente má, e a sala do banquete de casamento ficou cheia de convidados.11 "Mas quando o rei entrou para ver os convidados, notou ali um homem que não estava usando veste nupcial.12 E lhe perguntou: ‘Amigo, como você entrou aqui sem veste nupcial? ’ O homem emudeceu.13 "Então o rei disse aos que serviam: ‘Amarrem-lhe as mãos e os pés, e lancem-no para fora, nas trevas; ali haverá choro e ranger de dentes’.14 "Pois muitos são chamados, mas poucos são escolhidos".15 Então os fariseus saíram e começaram a planejar um meio de enredá-lo em suas próprias palavras.16 Enviaram-lhe seus discípulos juntamente com os herodianos que lhe disseram: "Mestre, sabemos que és íntegro e que ensinas o caminho de Deus conforme a verdade. Tu não te deixas influenciar por ninguém, porque não te prendes à aparência dos homens.17 Dize-nos, pois: Qual é a tua opinião? É certo pagar imposto a César ou não? "18 Mas Jesus, percebendo a má intenção deles, perguntou: "Hipócritas! Por que vocês estão me pondo à prova?19 Mostrem-me a moeda usada para pagar o imposto". Eles lhe mostraram um denário,20 e ele lhes perguntou: "De quem é esta imagem e esta inscrição? "21 "De César", responderam eles. E ele lhes disse: "Então, dêem a César o que é de César e a Deus o que é de Deus".22 Ao ouvirem isso, eles ficaram admirados; e, deixando-o, retiraram-se.23 Naquele mesmo dia, os saduceus, que dizem que não há ressurreição, aproximaram-se dele com a seguinte questão:24 "Mestre, Moisés disse que se um homem morrer sem deixar filhos, seu irmão deverá casar-se com a viúva e dar-lhe descendência.25 Entre nós havia sete irmãos. O primeiro casou-se e morreu. Como não teve filhos, deixou a mulher para seu irmão.26 A mesma coisa aconteceu com o segundo, com o terceiro, até o sétimo.27 Finalmente, depois de todos, morreu a mulher.28 Pois bem, na ressurreição, de qual dos sete ela será esposa, visto que todos foram casados com ela? "29 Jesus respondeu: "Vocês estão enganados porque não conhecem as Escrituras nem o poder de Deus!30 Na ressurreição, as pessoas não se casam nem são dadas em casamento; mas são como os anjos no céu.31 E quanto à ressurreição dos mortos, vocês não leram o que Deus lhes disse:32 ‘Eu sou o Deus de Abraão, o Deus de Isaque e o Deus de Jacó’? Ele não é Deus de mortos, mas de vivos! "33 Ouvindo isso, a multidão ficou admirada com o seu ensino.34 Ao ouvirem dizer que Jesus havia deixado os saduceus sem resposta, os fariseus se reuniram.35 Um deles, perito na lei, o pôs à prova com esta pergunta:36 "Mestre, qual é o maior mandamento da Lei? "37 Respondeu Jesus: " ‘Ame o Senhor, o seu Deus de todo o seu coração, de toda a sua alma e de todo o seu entendimento’.38 Este é o primeiro e maior mandamento.39 E o segundo é semelhante a ele: ‘Ame o seu próximo como a si mesmo’.40 Destes dois mandamentos dependem toda a Lei e os Profetas".41 Estando os fariseus reunidos, Jesus lhes perguntou:42 "O que vocês pensam a respeito do Cristo? De quem ele é filho? " "É filho de Davi", responderam eles.43 Ele lhes disse: "Então, como é que Davi, falando pelo Espírito, o chama ‘Senhor’? Pois ele afirma:44 ‘O Senhor disse ao meu Senhor: "Senta-te à minha direita, até que eu ponha os teus inimigos debaixo de teus pés" ’.45 Se, pois, Davi o chama ‘Senhor’, como pode ser ele seu filho? "46 Ninguém conseguia responder-lhe uma palavra; e daquele dia em diante, ninguém jamais se atreveu a lhe fazer perguntas.

1 Again Jesus spoke to them in figurative language.2 »The Kingdom of the Heavens,« He said, »may be compared to a king who celebrated the marriage of his son,3 and sent his servants to call the invited guests to the wedding, but they were unwilling to come.4 »Again he sent other servants with a message to those who were invited.« `My breakfast is now ready,' he said, `my bullocks and fat cattle are killed, and every preparation is made: come to the wedding.'5 »They however gave no heed, but went, one to his home in the country, another to his business;«6 and the rest seized the king's servants, maltreated them, and murdered them.7 So the king's anger was stirred, and he sent his troops and destroyed those murderers and burnt their city.8 Then he said to his servants, »`The wedding banquet is ready, but those who were invited were unworthy of it.9 Go out therefore to the crossroads, and everybody you meet invite to the wedding.'10 »So they went out into the roads and gathered together all they could find, both bad and good, and the banqueting hall was filled with guests.«11 »Now the king came in to see the guests; and among them he discovered one who was not wearing a wedding-robe.«12 »`My friend,' he said, `how is it that you came in here without a wedding robe?'«13 »The man stood speechless. Then the king said to the servants,« `Bind him hand and foot and fling him into the darkness outside: there will be the weeping aloud and the gnashing of teeth.'14 »For there are many called, but few chosen.«15 Then the Pharisees went and consulted together how they might entrap Him in His conversation.16 So they sent to Him their disciples together with the Herodians; who said, »Teacher, we know that you are truthful and that you faithfully teach God's truth; and that no fear of man misleads you, for you are not biased by men's wealth or rank.17 Give us your judgement therefore: is it allowable for us to pay a poll-tax to Caesar, or not?«18 Perceiving their wickedness, Jesus replied, »Why are you hypocrites trying to ensnare me?19 Show me the tribute coin.« And they brought Him a shilling.20 »Whose likeness and inscription,« He asked, »is this?«21 »Caesar's,« they replied. »Pay therefore,« He rejoined, »what is Caesar's to Caesar; and what is God's to God.«22 They heard this, and were astonished; then left Him, and went their way.23 On the same day a party of Sadducees came to Him, contending that there is no resurrection. And they put this case to Him.24 »Teacher,« they said, »Moses enjoined, `If a man die childless, his brother shall marry his widow, and raise up a family for him.'25 Now we had among us seven brothers. The eldest of them married, but died childless, leaving his wife to his brother.26 So also did the second and the third, down to the seventh,27 till the woman also died, after surviving them all.28 At the Resurrection, therefore, whose wife of the seven will she be? for they all married her.«29 The reply of Jesus was, »You are in error, through ignorance of the Scriptures and of the power of God.30 For in the Resurrection, men neither marry nor are women given in marriage, but they are like angels in Heaven.31 But as to the Resurrection of the dead, have you never read what God says to you,32 `I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob'? He is not the God of dead, but of living men.«33 All the crowd heard this, and were filled with amazement at His teaching.34 Now the Pharisees came up when they heard that He had silenced the Sadducees,35 and one of them, an expounder of the Law, asked Him as a test question,36 »Teacher, which is the greatest Commandment in the Law?«37 »`Thou shalt love the Lord thy God,'« He answered, »`with thy whole heart, thy whole soul, thy whole mind.'38 This is the greatest and foremost Commandment.39 And the second is similar to it: `Thou shalt love thy fellow man as much as thyself.'40 The whole of the Law and the Prophets is summed up in these two Commandments.«41 While the Pharisees were still assembled there, Jesus put a question to them.42 »What think you about the Christ,« He said, »whose son is He?«»David's,« they replied.43 »How then,« He asked, »does David, taught by the Spirit, call Him Lord, when he says,44 »`The Lord said to my Lord, sit at My right hand until I have put thy foes beneath thy feet'?«45 »If therefore David calls Him Lord, how can He be his son?«46 No one could say a word in reply, nor from that day did any one venture again to put a question to Him.
