1 "Tenham o cuidado de não praticar suas ‘obras de justiça’ diante dos outros para serem vistos por eles. Se fizerem isso, vocês não terão nenhuma recompensa do Pai celestial.2 "Portanto, quando você der esmola, não anuncie isso com trombetas, como fazem os hipócritas nas sinagogas e nas ruas, a fim de serem honrados pelos outros. Eu lhes garanto que eles já receberam sua plena recompensa.3 Mas quando você der esmola, que a sua mão esquerda não saiba o que está fazendo a direita,4 de forma que você preste a sua ajuda em segredo. E seu Pai, que vê o que é feito em segredo, o recompensará".5 "E quando vocês orarem, não sejam como os hipócritas. Eles gostam de ficar orando em pé nas sinagogas e nas esquinas, a fim de serem vistos pelos outros. Eu lhes asseguro que eles já receberam sua plena recompensa.6 Mas quando você orar, vá para seu quarto, feche a porta e ore a seu Pai, que está no secreto. Então seu Pai, que vê no secreto, o recompensará.7 E quando orarem, não fiquem sempre repetindo a mesma coisa, como fazem os pagãos. Eles pensam que por muito falarem serão ouvidos.8 Não sejam iguais a eles, porque o seu Pai sabe do que vocês precisam, antes mesmo de o pedirem.9 Vocês, orem assim: ‘Pai nosso, que estás nos céus! Santificado seja o teu nome.10 Venha o teu Reino; seja feita a tua vontade, assim na terra como no céu.11 Dá-nos hoje o nosso pão de cada dia.12 Perdoa as nossas dívidas, assim como perdoamos aos nossos devedores.13 E não nos deixes cair em tentação, mas livra-nos do mal, porque teu é o Reino, o poder e a glória para sempre. Amém’.14 Pois se perdoarem as ofensas uns dos outros, o Pai celestial também lhes perdoará.15 Mas se não perdoarem uns aos outros, o Pai celestial não lhes perdoará as ofensas".16 "Quando jejuarem, não mostrem uma aparência triste como os hipócritas, pois eles mudam a aparência do rosto a fim de que os homens vejam que eles estão jejuando. Eu lhes digo verdadeiramente que eles já receberam sua plena recompensa.17 Ao jejuar, ponha óleo sobre a cabeça e lave o rosto,18 para que não pareça aos outros que você está jejuando, mas apenas a seu Pai, que vê no secreto. E seu Pai, que vê no secreto, o recompensará".19 "Não acumulem para vocês tesouros na terra, onde a traça e a ferrugem destroem, e onde os ladrões arrombam e furtam.20 Mas acumulem para vocês tesouros no céu, onde a traça e a ferrugem não destroem, e onde os ladrões não arrombam nem furtam.21 Pois onde estiver o seu tesouro, aí também estará o seu coração.22 "Os olhos são a candeia do corpo. Se os seus olhos forem bons, todo o seu corpo será cheio de luz.23 Mas se os seus olhos forem maus, todo o seu corpo será cheio de trevas. Portanto, se a luz que está dentro de você são trevas, que tremendas trevas são!24 "Ninguém pode servir a dois senhores; pois odiará a um e amará o outro, ou se dedicará a um e desprezará o outro. Vocês não podem servir a Deus e ao Dinheiro".25 "Portanto eu lhes digo: não se preocupem com suas próprias vidas, quanto ao que comer ou beber; nem com seus próprios corpos, quanto ao que vestir. Não é a vida mais importante do que a comida, e o corpo mais importante do que a roupa?26 Observem as aves do céu: não semeiam nem colhem nem armazenam em celeiros; contudo, o Pai celestial as alimenta. Não têm vocês muito mais valor do que elas?27 Quem de vocês, por mais que se preocupe, pode acrescentar uma hora que seja à sua vida?28 "Por que vocês se preocupam com roupas? Vejam como crescem os lírios do campo. Eles não trabalham nem tecem.29 Contudo, eu lhes digo que nem Salomão, em todo o seu esplendor, vestiu-se como um deles.30 Se Deus veste assim a erva do campo, que hoje existe e amanhã é lançada ao fogo, não vestirá muito mais a vocês, homens de pequena fé?31 Portanto, não se preocupem, dizendo: ‘Que vamos comer? ’ ou ‘que vamos beber? ’ ou ‘que vamos vestir? ’32 Pois os pagãos é que correm atrás dessas coisas; mas o Pai celestial sabe que vocês precisam delas.33 Busquem, pois, em primeiro lugar o Reino de Deus e a sua justiça, e todas essas coisas lhes serão acrescentadas.34 Portanto, não se preocupem com o amanhã, pois o amanhã se preocupará consigo mesmo. Basta a cada dia o seu próprio mal".

1 »But beware of doing your good actions in the sight of men, in order to attract their gaze; if you do, there is no reward for you with your Father who is in Heaven.«2 `When you give in charity, never blow a trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and streets in order that their praises may be sung by men. I solemnly tell you that they already have their reward.3 But when you are giving in charity, let not your left hand perceive what your right hand is doing,4 that your charities may be in secret; and then your Father –He who sees in secret– will recompense you.5 »And when praying, you must not be like the hypocrites. They are fond of standing and praying in the synagogues or at the corners of the wider streets, in order that men may see them. I solemnly tell you that they already have their reward.«6 But you, whenever you pray, go into your own room and shut the door: then pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father –He who sees in secret– will recompense you.7 »And when praying, do not use needless repetitions as the Gentiles do, for they expect to be listened to because of their multitude of words.«8 Do not, however, imitate them; for your Father knows what things you need before ever you ask Him.9 »In this manner therefore pray: `Our Father who art in Heaven, may Thy name be kept holy;«10 let Thy kingdom come; let Thy will be done, as in Heaven so on earth;11 give us to-day our bread for the day;12 and forgive us our shortcomings, as we also have forgiven those who have failed in their duty towards us;13 and bring us not into temptation, but rescue us from the Evil one.'14 »For if you forgive others their offences, your Heavenly Father will forgive you also;«15 but if you do not forgive others their offences, neither will your Father forgive yours.16 »When any of you fast, never assume gloomy looks as the hypocrites do; for they disfigure their faces in order that it may be evident to men that they are fasting. I solemnly tell you that they already have their reward.«17 But, whenever you fast, pour perfume on your hair and wash your face,18 that it may not be apparent to men that you are fasting, but to your Father who is in secret; and your Father –He who sees in secret– will recompense you.19 »Do not lay up stores of wealth for yourselves on earth, where the moth and wear-and-tear destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.«20 But amass wealth for yourselves in Heaven, where neither the moth nor wear-and-tear destroys, and where thieves do not break in and steal.21 For where your wealth is, there also will your heart be.22 »The eye is the lamp of the body. If then your eyesight is good, your whole body will be well lighted;«23 but if your eyesight is bad, your whole body will be dark. If however the very light within you is darkness, how dense must the darkness be!24 »No man can be the bondservant of two masters; for either he will dislike one and like the other, or he will attach himself to one and think slightingly of the other. You cannot be the bondservants both of God and of gold.«25 For this reason I charge you not to be over-anxious about your lives, inquiring what you are to eat or what you are to drink, nor yet about your bodies, inquiring what clothes you are to put on. Is not the life more precious than its food, and the body than its clothing?26 Look at the birds which fly in the air: they do not sow or reap or store up in barns, but your Heavenly Father feeds them: are not you of much greater value than they?27 Which of you by being over-anxious can add a single foot to his height?28 And why be anxious about clothing? Learn a lesson from the wild lilies. Watch their growth. They neither toil nor spin,29 and yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his magnificence could array himself like one of these.30 And if God so clothes the wild herbage which to-day flourishes and to-morrow is thrown into the oven, is it not much more certain that He will clothe you, you men of little faith?31 Do not be over-anxious, therefore, asking `What shall we eat?' or `What shall we drink?' or `What shall we wear?'32 For all these are questions that Gentiles are always asking; but your Heavenly Father knows that you need these things–all of them.33 But make His Kingdom and righteousness your chief aim, and then these things shall all be given you in addition.34 Do not be over-anxious, therefore, about to-morrow, for to-morrow will bring its own cares. Enough for each day are its own troubles.
