Davi gerou Salomão, cuja mãe tinha sido mulher de Urias;7 Salomão gerou Roboão; Roboão gerou Abias; Abias gerou Asa;8 Asa gerou Josafá; Josafá gerou Jorão; Jorão gerou Uzias;9 Uzias gerou Jotão; Jotão gerou Acaz; Acaz gerou Ezequias;10 Ezequias gerou Manassés; Manassés gerou Amom; Amom gerou Josias;11 e Josias gerou Jeconias e seus irmãos, no tempo do exílio na Babilônia.12 Depois do exílio na Babilônia: Jeconias gerou Salatiel; Salatiel gerou Zorobabel;13 Zorobabel gerou Abiúde; Abiúde gerou Eliaquim; Eliaquim gerou Azor;14 Azor gerou Sadoque; Sadoque gerou Aquim; Aquim gerou Eliúde;15 Eliúde gerou Eleazar; Eleazar gerou Matã; Matã gerou Jacó;16 e Jacó gerou José, marido de Maria, da qual nasceu Jesus, que é chamado Cristo.17 Assim, ao todo houve catorze gerações de Abraão a Davi, catorze de Davi até o exílio na Babilônia e catorze do exílio até o Cristo.18 Foi assim o nascimento de Jesus Cristo: Maria, sua mãe, estava prometida em casamento a José, mas, antes que se unissem, achou-se grávida pelo Espírito Santo.19 Por ser José, seu marido, um homem justo, e não querendo expô-la à desonra pública, pretendia anular o casamento secretamente.20 Mas, depois de ter pensado nisso, apareceu-lhe um anjo do Senhor em sonho e disse: "José, filho de Davi, não tema receber Maria como sua esposa, pois o que nela foi gerado procede do Espírito Santo.21 Ela dará à luz um filho, e você deverá dar-lhe o nome de Jesus, porque ele salvará o seu povo dos seus pecados".22 Tudo isso aconteceu para que se cumprisse o que o Senhor dissera pelo profeta:23 "A virgem ficará grávida e dará à luz um filho, e lhe chamarão Emanuel" que significa "Deus conosco".24 Ao acordar, José fez o que o anjo do Senhor lhe tinha ordenado e recebeu Maria como sua esposa.25 Mas não teve relações com ela enquanto ela não deu à luz um filho. E ele lhe pôs o nome de Jesus.

David (by Uriah's widow) was the father of Solomon;7 Solomon of Rehoboam; Rehoboam of Abijah; Abijah of Asa;8 Asa of Jehoshaphat; Jehoshaphat of Jehoram; Jehoram of Uzziah;9 Uzziah of Jotham; Jotham of Ahaz; Ahaz of Hezekiah;10 Hezekiah of Manasseh; Manasseh of Amon; Amon of Josiah;11 Josiah of Jeconiah and his brothers at the period of the Removal to Babylon.12 After the Removal to Babylon Jeconiah had a son Shealtiel; Shealtiel was the father of Zerubbabel;13 Zerubbabel of Abiud; Abiud of Eliakim; Eliakim of Azor;14 Azor of Zadok; Zadok of Achim; Achim of Eliud;15 Eliud of Eleazar; Eleazar of Matthan; Matthan of Jacob;16 and Jacob of Joseph the husband of Mary, who was the mother of JESUS who is called CHRIST.17 There are therefore, in all, fourteen generations from Abraham to David; fourteen from David to the Removal to Babylon; and fourteen from the Removal to Babylon to the Christ.18 The circumstances of the birth of Jesus Christ were these. After his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they were united in marriage, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit.19 But Joseph her husband, being a kind-hearted man and unwilling publicly to disgrace her, had determined to release her privately from the betrothal.20 But while he was contemplating this step, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, »Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to bring home your wife Mary, for she is with child through the Holy Spirit.21 She will give birth to a Son, and you are to call His name JESUS for He it is who will save His People from their sins.«22 All this took place in fulfilment of what the Lord had spoken through the Prophet,23 »Mark! The maiden will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call His name Immanuel« –a word which signifies `God with us'.24 When Joseph awoke, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded, and brought home his wife,25 but did not live with her until she had given birth to a son. The child's name he called JESUS.
