1 Então Jó falou novamente:
2 "Sim, eu sei que tudo isso é verdade de modo geral,
mas como alguém pode ser inocente aos olhos de Deus?
3 Se uma pessoa quisesse levar Deus ao tribunal,
acaso poderia lhe responder uma vez em mil?
4 Pois Deus é muito sábio e poderoso:
quem alguma vez o enfrentou e saiu vencedor?
5 "Ele move montanhas sem dar aviso,
e, em sua ira, as põe abaixo.
6 Sacode a terra de seu lugar
e faz tremer seus alicerces.
7 Se ele ordena, o sol não nasce
e as estrelas não brilham.
8 Ele, sozinho, estendeu os céus
e marcha sobre as ondas do mar.
9 Criou todas as estrelas: a Ursa e o Órion,
as Plêiades e as constelações do sul.
10 Ele faz grandes coisas, maravilhosas demais para entender,
e realiza milagres incontáveis.
11 "Quando se aproxima de mim, não posso vê-lo;
quando passa, não percebo sua presença.
12 Se ele toma à força, quem o fará devolver?
Quem ousa perguntar: ‘O que estás fazendo?’.
13 E Deus não refreia sua ira;
até os monstros marinhos são esmagados sob os seus pés.
14 "Quem sou eu, então, para tentar responder a Deus,
ou mesmo argumentar com ele?
15 Ainda que fosse inocente, seria incapaz de me defender;
poderia apenas implorar por misericórdia ao meu Juiz.
16 E, mesmo que eu o chamasse e ele me respondesse,
não acredito que me daria atenção.
17 Pois ele me ataca com uma tempestade
e, sem motivo, me fere repetidas vezes.
18 Não permite que eu recupere o fôlego,
mas enche minha vida de amargura.
19 Se é uma questão de força, ele é o forte;
se é uma questão de justiça, quem ousa levá-lo ao tribunal?
20 Embora eu seja inocente, minha própria boca me declararia culpado;
embora eu seja íntegro, ela provaria que sou perverso.
21 "Sou íntegro, mas isso não faz diferença para mim;
desprezo minha vida.
22 Íntegro ou perverso, é tudo a mesma coisa;
por isso digo: ‘Ele destrói tanto o íntegro como o perverso’.
23 Quando uma praga vem repentinamente,
ele ri da morte dos inocentes.
24 A terra está nas mãos dos perversos,
e ele cega os olhos dos juízes;
se não é Deus quem faz isso, então quem é?
25 "Minha vida corre mais depressa que um atleta,
foge sem jamais ver a alegria.
26 Desaparece como um barco veloz de papiro,
como a águia que se lança sobre a presa.
27 Se eu decidisse esquecer minhas queixas,
deixar de lado a tristeza e exibir um rosto alegre,
28 ainda assim temeria todos os meus sofrimentos,
pois sei, ó Deus, que não me considerarás inocente.
29 Não importa o que aconteça, serei considerado culpado;
então de que adianta continuar lutando?
30 Mesmo que eu me lave com sabão
e limpe as mãos com soda,
31 tu me lançarás num poço de lodo,
e até minhas roupas terão nojo de mim.
32 "Deus não é ser humano, como eu;
não posso discutir com ele nem levá-lo ao tribunal.
33 Se ao menos houvesse um mediador entre nós,
alguém que nos aproximasse um do outro!
34 Ele afastaria de mim o castigo de Deus,
e eu já não viveria aterrorizado.
35 Então falaria com ele sem medo,
mas, sozinho, não consigo fazê-lo."

2 "Truly I know that it is so,
but how can man be just with God?
3 If he is pleased to contend with him,
he can’t answer him one time in a thousand.
4 God is wise in heart, and mighty in strength.
Who has hardened himself against him and prospered?
5 He removes the mountains, and they don’t know it,
when he overturns them in his anger.
6 He shakes the earth out of its place.
Its pillars tremble.
7 He commands the sun and it doesn’t rise,
and seals up the stars.
8 He alone stretches out the heavens,
and treads on the waves of the sea.
9 He makes the Bear, Orion, and the Pleiades,
and the rooms of the south.
10 He does great things past finding out;
yes, marvelous things without number.
11 Behold, he goes by me, and I don’t see him.
He passes on also, but I don’t perceive him.
12 Behold, he snatches away.
Who can hinder him?
Who will ask him, ‘What are you doing?’
13 "God will not withdraw his anger.
The helpers of Rahab stoop under him.
14 How much less will I answer him,
and choose my words to argue with him?
15 Though I were righteous, yet I wouldn’t answer him.
I would make supplication to my judge.
16 If I had called, and he had answered me,
yet I wouldn’t believe that he listened to my voice.
17 For he breaks me with a storm,
and multiplies my wounds without cause.
18 He will not allow me to catch my breath,
but fills me with bitterness.
19 If it is a matter of strength, behold, he is mighty!
If of justice, ‘Who,’ says he, ‘will summon me?’
20 Though I am righteous, my own mouth will condemn me.
Though I am blameless, it will prove me perverse.
21 I am blameless.
I don’t respect myself.
I despise my life.
22 "It is all the same.
Therefore I say he destroys the blameless and the wicked.
23 If the scourge kills suddenly,
he will mock at the trial of the innocent.
24 The earth is given into the hand of the wicked.
He covers the faces of its judges.
If not he, then who is it?
25 "Now my days are swifter than a runner.
They flee away. They see no good.
26 They have passed away as the swift ships,
as the eagle that swoops on the prey.
27 If I say, ‘I will forget my complaint,
I will put off my sad face, and cheer up,’
28 I am afraid of all my sorrows.
I know that you will not hold me innocent.
29 I will be condemned.
Why then do I labor in vain?
30 If I wash myself with snow,
and cleanse my hands with lye,
31 yet you will plunge me in the ditch.
My own clothes will abhor me.
32 For he is not a man, as I am, that I should answer him,
that we should come together in judgment.
33 There is no umpire between us,
that might lay his hand on us both.
34 Let him take his rod away from me.
Let his terror not make me afraid;
35 then I would speak, and not fear him,
for I am not so in myself.
