1 O rei Jeosafá regressou à sua terra, a Jerusalém, são e salvo. 2 O vidente Jeú, filho de Hanani, foi ao seu encontro. "Terá sido correto que tenhas ajudado um ímpio e tornado amigo de alguém que repudia o Senhor?", perguntou-lhe. "Por isso, a ira do Senhor cairá sobre ti. 3 Contudo, há boas coisas a teu respeito: tiraste os ídolos da deusa Achera e fizeste o possível por ser fiel a Deus."

4 Jeosafá viveu em Jerusalém. Mais tarde, tornou a deslocar-se pela terra, desde Berseba até às colinas de Efraim, para encorajar o povo a adorar o Senhor, Deus dos seus antepassados. 5 Nomeou também juízes sobre toda a nação, estabelecidos nas principais cidades. 6 Deu-lhes instruções: "Vejam bem como procedem; não fui eu quem vos nomeou, foi Deus. Ele estará convosco e vos ajudará a fazer justiça em cada caso que vos for apresentado. 7 Tenham muito cuidado em nunca tomar decisões que não correspondam à vontade do Senhor. Porque não pode haver injustiça, nem parcialidade, nem suborno entre os juízes do Senhor, nosso Deus."

8 Jeosafá estabeleceu tribunais em Jerusalém, formados também por levitas, sacerdotes, líderes dos clãs e juízes para julgarem da parte do Senhor, bem como mediarem e resolverem controvérsias. 9 Foram estas as instruções que lhes deu: "Vocês são chamados a agir sempre no temor do Senhor, com corações retos. 10 Sempre que um caso vos seja referido pelos juízes da província, seja por agressão física ou assuntos referentes à violação da Lei e das ordenanças de Deus, deverão estabelecer com clareza todos os dados e, com provas em apoio, decidir com justiça, para que a ira do Senhor não venha sobre vocês e sobre eles. Se assim fizerem, livrar-se-ão de qualquer culpa em alguma injustiça que puder ser feita."

11 Depois nomeou Amarias, o sumo sacerdote, como presidente dos juízes, em casos que envolvessem a violação de coisas sagradas. Zebadias, filho de Ismael, chefe da tribo de Judá, foi nomeado presidente de todos os casos de carácter civil, tendo os levitas por assistentes. "Sejam corajosos no exercício das vossas funções!", disse-lhes. "Que o Senhor seja com os que são retos!"

1 And Jehoshaphat the king of Judah returned to his house in peace to Jerusalem. 2 And Jehu the son of Hanani the seer went out to meet him, and said to king Jehoshaphat, Shouldest thou help the ungodly, and love them that hate the LORD? therefore is wrath upon thee from before the LORD. 3 Nevertheless there are good things found in thee, in that thou hast taken away the groves out of the land, and hast prepared thine heart to seek God. 4 And Jehoshaphat dwelt at Jerusalem: and he went out again through the people from Beer-sheba to mount Ephraim, and brought them back unto the LORD God of their fathers.*19.4 he went…: Heb. he returned and went out

5 And he set judges in the land throughout all the fenced cities of Judah, city by city, 6 And said to the judges, Take heed what ye do: for ye judge not for man, but for the LORD, who is with you in the judgment.*19.6 in…: Heb. in the matter of judgment 7 Wherefore now let the fear of the LORD be upon you; take heed and do it: for there is no iniquity with the LORD our God, nor respect of persons, nor taking of gifts.

8 Moreover in Jerusalem did Jehoshaphat set of the Levites, and of the priests, and of the chief of the fathers of Israel, for the judgment of the LORD, and for controversies, when they returned to Jerusalem. 9 And he charged them, saying, Thus shall ye do in the fear of the LORD, faithfully, and with a perfect heart. 10 And what cause soever shall come to you of your brethren that dwell in their cities, between blood and blood, between law and commandment, statutes and judgments, ye shall even warn them that they trespass not against the LORD, and so wrath come upon you, and upon your brethren: this do, and ye shall not trespass. 11 And, behold, Amariah the chief priest is over you in all matters of the LORD; and Zebadiah the son of Ishmael, the ruler of the house of Judah, for all the king’s matters: also the Levites shall be officers before you.
