1 Certo dia, o anjo do Senhor chegou a Boquim, vindo de Gilgal, e fez este anúncio ao povo de Israel: "Tirei-vos do Egito, trouxe-vos para esta terra que prometi aos vossos antepassados e garanti-vos que nunca quebraria a aliança que fiz convosco na condição de, da vossa parte, 2 não fazerem qualquer espécie de tratado com os povos que vivem aqui; disse-vos que deveriam destruir os altares destas gentes. Porque não obedeceram? 3 Agora, visto que quebraram a aliança feita comigo, esta deixou de ter efeito, e já não prometo destruir as nações que vivem nesta terra; pelo contrário, elas serão como espinhos na carne; os seus deuses tornar-se-ão uma armadilha fatal para vocês."

4 O povo começou a lamentar-se e a chorar, quando o anjo do Senhor acabou de falar. 5 Por isso, o nome daquele lugar ficou a chamar-se Boquim (eles choram). Então ofereceram sacrifícios ao Senhor.

6 Quando Josué finalmente licenciou os exércitos de Israel, cada tribo foi para os seus novos territórios e tomaram posse das terras que lhes tinham sido doadas. 7 O povo permaneceu fiel ao Senhor durante o tempo de vida de Josué, e também enquanto viveram aqueles anciãos da sua geração que tinham visto os poderosos milagres feitos pelo Senhor a favor de Israel. 8 Josué, o homem de Deus, morreu com a idade de 110 anos; 9 foi enterrado no limite da sua propriedade em Timenate-Heres, nas colinas de Efraim, a norte do monte Gaás.

10 Contudo, essa geração acabou por morrer; veio depois outra que ignorou o Senhor e tudo o que tinha feito por Israel. 11 O povo de Israel fez o que era mau aos olhos do Senhor, incluindo a adoração aos ídolos de Baal. 12 Abandonaram o Senhor, o Deus dos seus antepassados, que os tinha arrancado do Egito e puseram-se a prestar adoração aos ídolos das nações vizinhas. Por isso, a ira do Senhor acendeu-se contra Israel. 13 Os israelitas afastaram-se do Senhor e puseram-se a adorar a Baal e os ídolos astarotes. 14 Isto fez com que o Senhor ardesse de ira contra Israel. Então entregou-os nas mãos de salteadores que roubaram as suas propriedades. Entregou-os nas mãos dos seus inimigos ao seu redor e eles já não foram capazes de lhes resistir.

15 Assim, sempre que a nação de Israel saía, o Senhor dificultava-lhes a ação. Tinha-os avisado disso mesmo; tinha-lhes até prometido que o faria. Mas quando o povo se encontrava em grande aperto, 16 o Senhor fazia levantarem-se juízes para os livrar dos inimigos. 17 Mesmo assim, Israel não quis ouvir esses juízes, pondo-se a adorar outros deuses. Bem depressa se desviaram da verdadeira fé dos seus pais, pois recusaram obedecer aos mandamentos do Senhor. 18 Cada juiz salvava o povo de Israel dos seus inimigos, enquanto vivia, porque o Senhor se apiedava com o clamor do povo sob o peso da opressão; e assim os ajudava enquanto o juiz vivia. 19 Mas quando este morria, deixavam de viver com justiça e faziam ainda pior do que os seus pais. Dirigiam novamente preces aos ídolos pagãos, lançando-se ao chão em atitudes de humilde adoração. Voltavam obstinadamente aos hábitos malvados das nações que se situavam à sua volta.

20 Então a ira do Senhor tornava a acender-se contra Israel e declarava: "Visto que este povo violou a aliança que fiz com os seus antecessores e não me obedeceu, 21 nunca mais expulsarei as nações que Josué deixou por conquistar quando morreu. 22 Pelo contrário, usarei estas nações para testar o meu povo, para me certificar se obedecem ao Senhor como fizeram os seus pais." 23 Foi assim que o Senhor não expulsou os povos que não tinha entregado nas mãos de Josué, antes permitiu que lá permanecessem.

1 And an angel of the LORD came up from Gilgal to Bochim, and said, I made you to go up out of Egypt, and have brought you unto the land which I sware unto your fathers; and I said, I will never break my covenant with you.*2.1 angel: or, messenger 2 And ye shall make no league with the inhabitants of this land; ye shall throw down their altars: but ye have not obeyed my voice: why have ye done this? 3 Wherefore I also said, I will not drive them out from before you; but they shall be as thorns in your sides, and their gods shall be a snare unto you. 4 And it came to pass, when the angel of the LORD spake these words unto all the children of Israel, that the people lifted up their voice, and wept. 5 And they called the name of that place Bochim: and they sacrificed there unto the LORD.*2.5 Bochim: that is, Weepers

6 And when Joshua had let the people go, the children of Israel went every man unto his inheritance to possess the land. 7 And the people served the LORD all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great works of the LORD, that he did for Israel.*2.7 outlived: Heb. prolonged days after 8 And Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the LORD, died, being an hundred and ten years old. 9 And they buried him in the border of his inheritance in Timnath-heres, in the mount of Ephraim, on the north side of the hill Gaash.*2.9 Timnath-heres: also called, Timnath-serah 10 And also all that generation were gathered unto their fathers: and there arose another generation after them, which knew not the LORD, nor yet the works which he had done for Israel.

11 And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD, and served Baalim: 12 And they forsook the LORD God of their fathers, which brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods, of the gods of the people that were round about them, and bowed themselves unto them, and provoked the LORD to anger. 13 And they forsook the LORD, and served Baal and Ashtaroth.

14 And the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel, and he delivered them into the hands of spoilers that spoiled them, and he sold them into the hands of their enemies round about, so that they could not any longer stand before their enemies. 15 Whithersoever they went out, the hand of the LORD was against them for evil, as the LORD had said, and as the LORD had sworn unto them: and they were greatly distressed.

16 Nevertheless the LORD raised up judges, which delivered them out of the hand of those that spoiled them.*2.16 delivered: Heb. saved 17 And yet they would not hearken unto their judges, but they went a whoring after other gods, and bowed themselves unto them: they turned quickly out of the way which their fathers walked in, obeying the commandments of the LORD; but they did not so. 18 And when the LORD raised them up judges, then the LORD was with the judge, and delivered them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge: for it repented the LORD because of their groanings by reason of them that oppressed them and vexed them. 19 And it came to pass, when the judge was dead, that they returned, and corrupted themselves more than their fathers, in following other gods to serve them, and to bow down unto them; they ceased not from their own doings, nor from their stubborn way.*2.19 corrupted…: or, were corrupt*2.19 ceased…: Heb. let nothing fall of their

20 And the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel; and he said, Because that this people hath transgressed my covenant which I commanded their fathers, and have not hearkened unto my voice; 21 I also will not henceforth drive out any from before them of the nations which Joshua left when he died: 22 That through them I may prove Israel, whether they will keep the way of the LORD to walk therein, as their fathers did keep it, or not. 23 Therefore the LORD left those nations, without driving them out hastily; neither delivered he them into the hand of Joshua.*2.23 left: or, suffered
