1 Após a morte de Eude, Israel tornou a fazer o que era mau aos olhos do Senhor, 2 o qual deixou que o rei Jabim de Hazor em Canaã os vencesse e dominasse. O comandante das suas forças militares era Sísera que vivia em Harosete-Ha-Goiim. 3 Este tinha novecentos carros de combate em ferro e tornou a vida insuportável para os israelitas durante 20 anos. Por fim, clamaram muito ao Senhor que os socorreu.

4 A pessoa que chefiava Israel nessa altura era Débora, uma mulher profetisa, casada com Lapidote. 5 Vivia num lugar chamado Palmeira de Débora, entre Rama e Betel nas colinas de Efraim. Era ali que os israelitas vinham ter com ela para resolver as suas questões. 6 Um dia, ela mandou chamar Baraque, filho de Abinoão, que vivia em Quedes no território de Naftali, e disse-lhe: "O Senhor, Deus de Israel, manda que mobilizes 10 000 homens das tribos de Naftali e de Zebulão. Leva-os ao monte Tabor para combater o poderoso exército de Jabim 7 e todos os carros sob as ordens do general Sísera. O Senhor diz: ‘Atraí-los-ei para junto do ribeiro de Quisom e os derrotarás ali.’ "

8 "Estou de acordo em partir; mas só se fores comigo!" disse-lhe Baraque.

9 "Está bem, irei contigo! Mas desde já te aviso que a honra desta empreitada não será para ti, porque o Senhor entregará Sísera nas mãos de uma mulher!" Foi, portanto, Débora com Baraque até Quedes. 10 Quando Baraque convocou os homens de Zebulão e de Naftali em Quedes, 10 000 acompanharam-no e Débora marchou com eles.

11 Entretanto, Heber, o queneu, tinha-se separado do resto do clã, passando a viver em vários sítios, chegando a estabelecer-se ao pé do carvalhal de Zaananim perto de Quedes. Os queneus eram os descendentes de Hobabe, o sogro de Moisés.

12 Quando o general Sísera foi informado de que Baraque e o seu exército estava acampado no monte Tabor, 13 tratou de mobilizar todo o exército, incluindo os novecentos carros de combate em ferro, pondo-se em marcha de Harosete-Ha-Goiim para o ribeiro de Quisom.

14 Então Débora disse a Baraque: "É a altura de entrar em ação! É o Senhor que vai à tua frente e te vai entregar Sísera!" Baraque levou os seus 10 000 homens até à base do monte Tabor, preparando-se para o combate. 15 Porém, o Senhor lançou o pânico nas hostes inimigas, tanto na infantaria como nos condutores dos carros. Sísera saltou mesmo do seu carro e fugiu a pé. 16 Baraque e os seus homens perseguiram-nos, aos que iam a pé e aos carros, até Harosete-Ha-Goiim. Não os deixaram até que estivessem todos liquidados. Ninguém foi deixado com vida.

17 Entretanto, Sísera escapara para a tenda de Jael, a mulher de Heber o queneu, pois havia um acordo de auxílio mútuo entre o rei Jabim de Hazor e o clã de Heber. 18 Jael saiu ao encontro de Sísera e disse-lhe: "Vem para a minha tenda, senhor! Ficarás seguro sob a nossa proteção. Nada receies." Ele aceitou o convite e ela cobriu-o com uma manta.

19 "Por favor, dá-me água, estou morto de sede!", disse-lhe. Jael deu-lhe leite a beber e tornou a cobri-lo. 20 "Põe-te aí à entrada", pediu ele. "Se alguém vier à minha procura, dizes que não está aqui ninguém."

21 Então Jael pegou numa estaca de tenda e num martelo; aproximou-se mansamente dele, que dormia num profundo sono, e cravou-lhe a estaca na testa, pregando-lhe a cabeça ao chão. E morreu dessa forma, pois estava carregado de sono e de cansaço.

22 Quando Baraque chegou à procura dele, Jael veio logo ao seu encontro: "Anda, vou mostrar-te o homem que procuras." Baraque entrou com ela na tenda e deparou com Sísera ali prostrado e sem vida com a estaca cravada na cabeça.

23 Nesse dia, Deus usou Israel para subjugar o rei Jabim de Canaã. 24 A partir dessa altura, Israel foi ganhando cada vez mais supremacia sobre a nação do rei Jabim, até que acabou por ser toda destruída.

1 And the children of Israel again did evil in the sight of the LORD, when Ehud was dead. 2 And the LORD sold them into the hand of Jabin king of Canaan, that reigned in Hazor; the captain of whose host was Sisera, which dwelt in Harosheth of the Gentiles. 3 And the children of Israel cried unto the LORD: for he had nine hundred chariots of iron; and twenty years he mightily oppressed the children of Israel.

4 And Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lapidoth, she judged Israel at that time. 5 And she dwelt under the palm tree of Deborah between Ramah and Beth-el in mount Ephraim: and the children of Israel came up to her for judgment. 6 And she sent and called Barak the son of Abinoam out of Kedesh-naphtali, and said unto him, Hath not the LORD God of Israel commanded, saying, Go and draw toward mount Tabor, and take with thee ten thousand men of the children of Naphtali and of the children of Zebulun? 7 And I will draw unto thee to the river Kishon Sisera, the captain of Jabin’s army, with his chariots and his multitude; and I will deliver him into thine hand. 8 And Barak said unto her, If thou wilt go with me, then I will go: but if thou wilt not go with me, then I will not go. 9 And she said, I will surely go with thee: notwithstanding the journey that thou takest shall not be for thine honour; for the LORD shall sell Sisera into the hand of a woman. And Deborah arose, and went with Barak to Kedesh.

10 And Barak called Zebulun and Naphtali to Kedesh; and he went up with ten thousand men at his feet: and Deborah went up with him. 11 Now Heber the Kenite, which was of the children of Hobab the father in law of Moses, had severed himself from the Kenites, and pitched his tent unto the plain of Zaanaim, which is by Kedesh. 12 And they shewed Sisera that Barak the son of Abinoam was gone up to mount Tabor. 13 And Sisera gathered together all his chariots, even nine hundred chariots of iron, and all the people that were with him, from Harosheth of the Gentiles unto the river of Kishon.*4.13 together: Heb. by cry, or, proclamation 14 And Deborah said unto Barak, Up; for this is the day in which the LORD hath delivered Sisera into thine hand: is not the LORD gone out before thee? So Barak went down from mount Tabor, and ten thousand men after him. 15 And the LORD discomfited Sisera, and all his chariots, and all his host, with the edge of the sword before Barak; so that Sisera lighted down off his chariot, and fled away on his feet. 16 But Barak pursued after the chariots, and after the host, unto Harosheth of the Gentiles: and all the host of Sisera fell upon the edge of the sword; and there was not a man left.*4.16 a man: Heb. unto one

17 Howbeit Sisera fled away on his feet to the tent of Jael the wife of Heber the Kenite: for there was peace between Jabin the king of Hazor and the house of Heber the Kenite.

18 And Jael went out to meet Sisera, and said unto him, Turn in, my lord, turn in to me; fear not. And when he had turned in unto her into the tent, she covered him with a mantle.*4.18 mantle: or, rug, or, blanket 19 And he said unto her, Give me, I pray thee, a little water to drink; for I am thirsty. And she opened a bottle of milk, and gave him drink, and covered him. 20 Again he said unto her, Stand in the door of the tent, and it shall be, when any man doth come and enquire of thee, and say, Is there any man here? that thou shalt say, No. 21 Then Jael Heber’s wife took a nail of the tent, and took an hammer in her hand, and went softly unto him, and smote the nail into his temples, and fastened it into the ground: for he was fast asleep and weary. So he died.*4.21 and took: Heb. and put 22 And, behold, as Barak pursued Sisera, Jael came out to meet him, and said unto him, Come, and I will shew thee the man whom thou seekest. And when he came into her tent, behold, Sisera lay dead, and the nail was in his temples. 23 So God subdued on that day Jabin the king of Canaan before the children of Israel. 24 And the hand of the children of Israel prospered, and prevailed against Jabin the king of Canaan, until they had destroyed Jabin king of Canaan.*4.24 prospered…: Heb. going went and was hard
