1 Um dia em que Moisés levava a pastar os rebanhos de Jetro seu sogro, sacerdote de Midiã, nos confins do deserto perto de Horebe, o monte de Deus, apareceu-lhe o anjo do Senhor numa chama de fogo dentro de uma sarça.3 Moisés reparou no fogo e verificou que o fogo não consumia a sarça. Aproximou-se para ver o que era e Deus chamou-o:4 Moisés! Moisés!Pronto! Aqui estou!5 Não te aproximes. Tira os sapatos, porque estás a pisar uma terra sagrada. Eu sou o Deus dos teus antepassados, o Deus de Abraão, de Isaque e de Jacob.Moisés escondeu o rosto nas mãos, porque teve receio de olhar para Deus! O Senhor continuou: Tenho visto a aflição do meu povo no Egipto, e tenho ouvido os seus clamores sob a opressão dos que os tiranizam. Por isso venho livrá-los dos egípcios e tirá-los dali para uma belíssima e vasta terra, uma terra em que jorram o leite e o mel, onde habitam os cananeus, os heteus, os amorreus, os perizeus, os heveus e os jebuseus.9 Sim, o choro do povo de Israel tem subido ao céu até mim, e tenho visto as duras condições de vida com que os egípcios os oprimem. Assim vou enviar-te a Faraó para que lhe peças que te deixe levar o meu povo para fora do Egipto.11 Mas eu não sou a pessoa indicada para tal!, exclamou Moisés.12 Deus insistiu: Eu estarei seguramente contigo. E a prova de que sou eu próprio quem te envia será o seguinte: Quando tiveres levado o meu povo para fora do Egipto havereis de adorar Deus aqui mesmo, nesta montanha.13 Moisés replicou ainda: Se eu for ter com o povo de Israel e lhe disser que foi o Deus dos nossos pais quem me enviou, eles vão perguntar-me - 'mas de que Deus estás tu a falar-nos?' E o que é que eu lhes digo?14 Que foi o Deus QUE É, foi a resposta. Diz assim: o EU SOU foi quem me mandou. Sim, diz-lhes: O Senhor, o Deus dos nossos antepassados Abraão, Isaque e Jacob mandou-me ter convosco. Porque este é o meu nome eterno, através de todas as gerações.16 Reúne então todos os anciãos e conta-lhes como o Senhor te apareceu aqui nesta sarça a arder e aquilo que eu te disse: 'Vim ter com o meu povo e vi o que lhe está a acontecer no Egipto. Prometo que os hei-de salvar das cargas e da humilhação que estão a sofrer, e que os hei-de levar para a terra que está agora ocupada pelos cananeus, heteus, amorreus, perizeus, heveus e pelos jebuseus, uma terra em que jorram o leite e o mel.'18 Os anciãos do povo de Israel hão-de aceitar a tua mensagem, e irão contigo ter com o rei do Egipto e dir-lhe-ão: 'Jeová, o Deus dos hebreus, apresentou-se a nós e mandou-nos que fôssemos a três dias de caminho no deserto oferecer-lhe sacrifícios de adoração. Deixa-nos pois ir.'19 Mas eu sei que o rei do Egipto não vos deixará ir senão sob uma pressão muito forte. Por isso hei-de estender a mão para castigar o Egipto com maravilhas que se realizarão ali até que por fim vos deixe ir. E farei com que os egípcios vos encham de presentes, quando se forem embora; não hão-de deixar o Egipto de mãos vazias. Cada mulher irá pedir à vizinha e à mulher do seu patrão toda a espécie de coisas de prata e ouro e dos tecidos mais finos com que vestireis os vossos filhos; e assim despojareis o Egipto do melhor que tem!

1 Now Moses kept the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian: and he led the flock to the backside of the desert, and came to the mountain of God, even to Horeb.2 And the angel of the LORD appeared to him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked, and behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed.3 And Moses said, I will now turn aside, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt.4 And when the LORD saw that he turned aside to see, God called to him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here am I.5 And he said, Approach not hither: put off thy shoes from thy feet, for the place on which thou standest is holy ground.6 Moreover he said, I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses hid his face: for he was afraid to look upon God.7 And the LORD said, I have surely seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt, and have heard their cry by reason of their task-masters; for I know their sorrows;8 And I am come down to deliver them from the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them out of that land, to a good land, and a large, to a land flowing with milk and honey; to the place of the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites.9 Now therefore, behold, the cry of the children of Israel is come to me: and I have also seen the oppression with which the Egyptians oppress them.10 Come now therefore, and I will send thee to Pharaoh, that thou mayest bring forth my people the children of Israel out of Egypt.11 And Moses said to God, Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh, and that I should bring forth the children of Israel out of Egypt?12 And he said, Certainly I will be with thee; and this shall be a token to thee, that I have sent thee: When thou hast brought forth the people out of Egypt, ye shall serve God upon this mountain.13 And Moses said to God, Behold, when I come to the children of Israel, and shall say to them, The God of your fathers hath sent me to you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? What shall I say to them?14 And God said to Moses, I AM THAT I AM: And he said, Thus shalt thou say to the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me to you.15 And God said, moreover, to Moses, Thus shalt thou say to the children of Israel, The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath sent me to you: this is my name for ever, and this is my memorial to all generations.16 Go and assemble the elders of Israel, and say to them, The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob, appeared to me, saying, I have surely visited you, and seen that which is done to you in Egypt.17 And I have said, I will bring you out of the affliction of Egypt to the land of the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites, to a land flowing with milk and honey.18 And they shall hearken to thy voice: and thou shalt come, thou and the elders of Israel, to the king of Egypt, and ye shall say to him, The LORD God of the Hebrews hath met with us: and now let us go (we beseech thee) three days journey into the wilderness, that we may sacrifice to the LORD our God.19 And I am sure that the king of Egypt will not let you go, no, not by a mighty hand.20 And I will stretch out my hand, and smite Egypt with all my wonders which I will do in the midst thereof: and after that he will let you go.21 And I will give this people favor in the sight of the Egyptians: and it shall come to pass, that when ye go, ye shall not go empty:22 But every woman shall borrow of her neighbor, and of her that dwelleth in her house, jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment: and ye shall put them upon your sons, and upon your daughters: and ye shall spoil the Egyptians.
