1 Depois foram ver Faraó: Trazemos-te uma mensagem de Jeová, o Deus de Israel, que é a seguinte: 'Deixa sair daqui o meu povo, porque têm que fazer uma santa peregrinação até ao deserto para realizarem uma celebração religiosa e me adorarem'.2 Mas quem é esse Senhor cuja voz eu tenho que obedecer para deixar partir Israel? Não sei quem é o Senhor, e tão pouco deixarei Israel sair daqui, foi a resposta.3 Arão e Moisés insistiram: O Deus dos hebreus veio ao nosso encontro. Temos de fazer uma viagem de três dias no deserto a fim de celebrar um sacrifício a Jeová, o nosso Deus. Se não lhe obedecermos, sujeitamo-nos a morrer pelo efeito de pragas ou de guerra.4 Quem pensam vocês que são, gritou ele, para andarem a distrair o povo dos seus trabalhos? Vão mas é já ocuparem-se das vossas tarefas!6 E naquele mesmo dia Faraó deu ordem aos capatazes e fiscais que nomeara para estarem sobre o povo: Daqui em diante não devem mais fornecer palha ao povo para fabricarem os tijolos. Eles próprios que a vão buscar! Contudo o nível de produção não deverá ser reduzido, nem sequer dum tijolo, porque se está mesmo a ver que têm pouco que fazer, pois doutra forma não andariam por aí a falar em ir ao deserto e em sacrificar lá ao seu Deus. Carreguem-nos com trabalho, façam-nos suar bem; isso há-de ensiná-los a não se porem a ouvir apelos mentirosos!10 Assim os capatazes e contra-mestres informaram o povo: Faraó deu-nos ordens para não vos ser fornecida mais palha para os tijolos. Vão buscá-la onde quiserem; no entanto devem produzir o mesmo número de sempre. Então o povo viu-se obrigado a ir por toda a parte à procura de palha.13 Os capatazes eram brutais. Têm de manter o mesmo nível de produção de sempre!, estavam constantemente a dizer. E mais ainda, puseram-se a açoitar os chefes de turno israelitas que eles próprios tinham posto sobre o povo, gritando-lhes: Porque é que não apresentaram o mesmo número de tijolos, nem ontem nem hoje?!15 Então esses chefes de turno israelitas foram, em representação do povo, ter com Faraó implorar-lhe: Porque nos tratas desta maneira? Não nos é dada a palha e exigem-nos que façamos o mesmo trabalho de antes, e ainda por cima batem-nos quando nos é impossível cumprir tal tarefa. A culpa é dos capatazes que nos exigem o que não podemos fazer!17 O que vocês são é ociosos. São uns indolentes. Se assim não fosse não andariam aí a dizer: 'Vamos fazer um sacrifício ao Senhor'. Vão mas é trabalhar. E já sabem: Não vos darão mais palha e terão de apresentar os mesmo níveis de produção como antes, foi esta a resposta de Faraó!19 Os chefes de turno israelitas estavam angustiados. E ao encontrarem Moisés e Arão, esperando por eles fora do palácio quando voltavam da audiência com Faraó, disseram-lhes solenemente: Que Deus vos julgue por terem feito com que nos tornássemos repelentes perante Faraó e o seu povo, como uma coisa podre e mal cheirosa, e lhes terem dado uma desculpa para nos matarem!22 Moisés foi falar com o Senhor: Senhor, como podes tu tratar assim o teu próprio povo? Porque é que me mandaste aqui se tencionavas fazer-lhes isto? Desde que comuniquei a Faraó a tua mensagem, este apenas se tornou ainda mais brutal para o povo, e tu de maneira nenhuma o salvaste ainda!

1 And afterward Moses and Aaron went in, and told Pharaoh, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Let my people go, that they may hold a feast to me in the wilderness.2 And Pharaoh said, Who is the LORD, that I should obey his voice to let Israel go? I know not the LORD, neither will I let Israel go.3 And they said, The God of the Hebrews hath met with us: let us go, we pray thee, three days' journey into the desert, and sacrifice to the LORD our God; lest he fall upon us with pestilence, or with the sword.4 And the king of Egypt said to them, Why do ye, Moses and Aaron, hinder the people from their works; go you to your burdens.5 And Pharaoh said, Behold, the people of the land now are many, and ye make them rest from their burdens.6 And Pharaoh commanded the same day the task-masters of the people, and their officers, saying,7 Ye shall no more give the people straw to make brick, as heretofore; let them go and gather straw for themselves.8 And the number of the bricks which they made heretofore, ye shall lay upon them; ye shall not diminish aught thereof; for they are idle: therefore they cry, saying, Let us go and sacrifice to our God.9 Let more work be laid upon the men, that they may labor therein: and let them not regard vain words.10 And the task-masters of the people went out, and their officers, and they spoke to the people, saying, Thus saith Pharaoh, I will not give you straw.11 Go ye, get you straw where ye can find it: yet not aught of your work shall be diminished.12 So the people were scattered abroad throughout all the land of Egypt, to gather stubble instead of straw.13 And the task-masters hastened them, saying, Fulfill your works, your daily tasks, as when there was straw.14 And the officers of the children of Israel, which Pharaoh's task-masters had set over them, were beaten, and demanded, Why have ye not fulfilled your task in making brick, both yesterday and to-day, as heretofore?15 Then the officers of the children of Israel came and cried to Pharaoh, saying, Why dealest thou thus with thy servants?16 There is no straw given to thy servants, and they say to us, Make brick: and behold, thy servants are beaten; but the fault is in thy own people.17 But he said, Ye are idle, ye are idle: therefore ye say, Let us go, and do sacrifice to the LORD.18 Go therefore now, and work; for there shall no straw be given you, yet shall ye deliver the number of bricks.19 And the officers of the children of Israel saw that they were in evil case, after it was said, Ye shall not diminish aught from your bricks of your daily task.20 And they met Moses and Aaron, who stood in the way, as they came forth from Pharaoh:21 And they said to them, The LORD look upon you, and judge; because ye have made our savor to be abhorred in the eyes of Pharaoh, and in the eyes of his servants, to put a sword in their hands to slay us.22 And Moses returned to the LORD, and said, Lord, why hast thou so ill treated this people? why is it that thou hast sent me?23 For since I came to Pharaoh to speak in thy name, he hath done evil to this people; neither hast thou delivered thy people at all.
