1 Disse o Senhor de novo a Moisés: Mandarei só mais uma grande calamidade sobre Faraó e a sua terra, depois da qual deixará então o povo partir. Desta vez ficará, na realidade, tão ansioso por se ver livre de vocês que será ele próprio, praticamente, a expulsar-vos. Diz a todos os homens e mulheres de Israel que se preparem, pedindo aos seus vizinhos egípcios toda a espécie de objectos caros, de prata e ouro.3 Deus fez com que os egípcios se tornassem agradáveis para eles, até porque Moisés era já uma grande figura no Egipto, e respeitado não só pelos funcionários de Faraó como por todo o povo.4 Moisés fez então anunciar a Faraó: Assim diz o Senhor: Cerca da meia-noite passarei através do Egipto. E morrerão todos os filhos mais velhos de cada família no país; desdeo filho mais velho de Faraó, herdeiro do trono, até ao filho mais velho do mais humilde escravo, inclusive dos animais. Um grande clamor de morte se levantará em toda a terra. Nunca se terá visto tristeza semelhante, nem antes nem depois. Mas nem um cão sequer ousará ladrar contra alguém do povo de Israel ou contra um só dos seus animais, para que saibam a diferença que o Senhor faz entre os egípcios e os israelitas. Toda a tua comitiva virá até mim, inclinando-se e rogando: 'Por favor, retira-te imediatamente daqui e leva o teu povo contigo'. Nessa altura então ir-me-ei! E Moisés retirou-se, encolerizado, da frente do palácio.9 O Senhor tinha dito a Moisés: Faraó não vos ouvirá, e isso dar-me-á oportunidade de fazer poderosas maravilhas que demonstrem o meu poder. Por isso, ainda que Moisés e Arão tenham feito estes milagres na própria presença de Faraó, o Senhor endureceu o coração deste e não deixou sair da terra os filhos de Israel.

1 And the LORD said to Moses, Yet will I bring one plague more upon Pharaoh, and upon Egypt; afterwards he will let you go hence: when he shall let you go, he shall surely thrust you out hence altogether.2 Speak now in the ears of the people, and let every man borrow of his neighbor, and every woman of her neighbor, jewels of silver, and jewels of gold.3 And the LORD gave the people favor in the sight of the Egyptians. Moreover, the man Moses was very great in the land of Egypt, in the sight of Pharaoh's servants, and in the sight of the people.4 And Moses said, Thus saith the LORD, About midnight will I go out into the midst of Egypt:5 And all the first-born in the land of Egypt shall die, from the first-born of Pharaoh that sitteth upon his throne, even to the first-born of the maid-servant that is behind the mill; and all the first-born of beasts.6 And there shall be a great cry throughout all the land of Egypt, such as there hath been none like it, nor shall be like it any more.7 But against any of the children of Israel shall not a dog move his tongue, against man or beast: that ye may know how the LORD doth put a difference between the Egyptians and Israel.8 And all these thy servants shall come down to me, and bow down themselves to me, saying, Depart thou, and all the people that follow thee; and after that I will depart: and he went out from Pharaoh in a great anger.9 And the LORD said to Moses, Pharaoh will not hearken to you; that my wonders may be multiplied in the land of Egypt.10 And Moses and Aaron did all these wonders before Pharaoh; and the LORD hardened Pharaoh's heart, so that he would not let the children of Israel depart from his land.
