1 Aproximava-se já a celebração da Páscoa, a festa judaica em que só se comia pão feito sem fermento. Os principais dos sacerdotes e mestres da lei tramavam activamente o assassínio de Jesus, pensando na maneira de o matar sem provocar tumulto, perigo que muito receavam.3 Então Satanás entrou em Judas Iscariotes, um dos doze discípulos, o qual foi ter com os principais dos sacerdotes e com os capitães da guarda do templo a fim de combinar a melhor maneira de entregar Jesus nas suas mãos. Eles ficaram muito satisfeitos ao saberem que Judas estava pronto a auxiliá-los e prometeram-lhe uma recompensa. Assim, começou a aguardar qualquer oportunidade de lhes entregar Jesus sem dar nas vistas.7 Ao chegar o dia da celebração, no qual se matava o cordeiro da Páscoa, que depois se comia com pão sem fermento, Jesus enviou Pedro e João à frente para que arranjassem onde preparar a sua refeição da Páscoa.9 Onde queres que vamos?, perguntaram.10 Logo que entrarem em Jerusalém encontrarão um homem transportando um cântaro de água. Sigam-no até à casa onde entrar e digam ao homem que ali vive: 'O nosso Mestre pede-te que nos mostres a sala onde irá comer a refeição da Páscoa com os seus discípulos.'12 Ele vos levará a uma grande sala mobilada. Preparem aí a refeição.13 Foram, então, até à cidade e tudo se passou como Jesus dissera; ali prepararam a ceia da Páscoa.14 Então chegou Jesus com os discípulos, e na altura devida todos se sentaram à mesa. Jesus disse:15 Desejei muito comer esta Páscoa convosco antes de começar o meu sofrimento. Porque agora vos digo que não comerei outra vez assim em vossa companhia senão quando o que esta refeição representa se realizar no reino de Deus.17 Pegou então num copo de vinho e, depois de ter dado graças, disse: Tomem e repartam entre si, porque só tornarei a beber vinho quando tiver chegado o reino de Deus.19 Depois pegou no pão e, dando igualmente graças a Deus por ele, partiu-o e deu-o aos discípulos: Este é o meu corpo, que é dado em vosso favor. Façam isto em memória de mim.20 Depois da ceia serviu-lhes de novo um copo de vinho, dizendo: Este vinho é o sinal do novo pacto, assinado com o meu sangue, que é derramado em sacrifício por vocês .21 Mas aqui sentado comigo a esta mesa está também o homem que me vai trair.22 O Filho do Homem tem de morrer porque isso faz parte do plano de Deus. Mas ai daquele que me trairá!23 Os discípulos puseram-se a perguntar entre si quem, de entre eles, seria capaz de fazer semelhante coisa!24 Depois começaram também a discutir qual deles teria posição mais destacada.25 Jesus disse-lhes: Neste mundo, os que têm o poder dominam seus súbditos, e são considerados figuras de relevo ao serviço da sociedade!26 Mas, no vosso meio, quem governa será como quem serve.27 O senhor senta-se à mesa e é servido pelos criados. Mas aqui, não! Porque eu sou quem vos serve.28 Porque me têm sido fiéis nestes tempos de aflição, e como o meu Pai me deu o reino, eu vos concedo o direito de comer e beber à minha mesa nesse reino. E sentar-se-ão em tronos próprios, para julgar as doze tribos de Israel.31 Simão, Simão, Satanás pediu para vos peneirar a todos vocês como o trigo. Mas eu intercedi por ti para que a tua fé não enfraqueça. Assim, quando te tiveres voltado para mim, fortalece os teus irmãos.33 Simão disse: Senhor, estou pronto até a ir para a prisão e a morrer contigo.34 Mas Jesus observou-lhe: Pedro, deixa-me dizer-te uma coisa: até o galo cantar, esta madrugada, três vezes dirás que não me conheces.35 Então Jesus perguntou-lhes: Quando vos enviei a pregar as boas novas e não tinham dinheiro, nem bagagem, nem vestuário de muda, como é que se governaram? Foi bem. Nada nos faltou.36 Mas agora, Jesus disse, se tiverem um saco, ou bolsa com dinheiro, levam. E, se não possuem uma espada, vendam a roupa e comprem-na. Porque chegou a altura de se cumprir isto que está escrito a meu respeito: 'Ele será condenado como criminoso!' Sim, o que se escreveu de mim se cumprirá.38 Mestre, temos aqui duas espadas!Basta! retorquiu Jesus.39 Então, acompanhado dos discípulos, deixou aquela sala e foi, como de costume, para o Monte das Oliveiras. Ali disse-lhes: Orem para que a tentação não vos domine.41 Afastou-se à distância de cerca de uma pedrada e, ajoelhando-se, orou assim: Pai, se quiseres, peço-te que leves de mim esta taça de sofrimento. Mas que se cumpra a tua vontade e não a minha.43 Então apareceu um anjo vindo do céu e que o confortava, porque estava em tal agonia de espírito que o seu suor era de sangue, caindo em gotas no chão, enquanto orava com fervor cada vez maior.45 Por fim, tornou a levantar-se e voltou para junto dos discípulos, encontrando-os a dormir, exaustos de tristeza.46 Então estão a dormir?, exclamou. Levantem-se! Orem a Deus para não caírem quando forem tentados.47 No próprio momento em que dizia isto, acercou-se uma multidão conduzida por Judas, um dos doze, o qual foi direito a Jesus para o beijar, numa saudação amistosa. Jesus disse: Judas, com um beijo traias o Filho do Homem?49 Quando os outros discípulos viram o que ia acontecer, exclamaram: Mestre, queres que lutemos? Temos as espadas! E um deles chegou a desferir um golpe contra um criado do supremo sacerdote, cortando-lhe a orelha direita.51 Mas Jesus respondeu: Não resistam. E, tocando no sítio da orelha do homem, restituiu-lha.52 Então, dirigindo-se aos principais dos sacerdotes, aos capitães da guarda do templo e aos anciãos do povo que conduziam a multidão, Jesus perguntou: Sou algum criminoso para virem assim prender-me, armados de espadas e paus?53 Porque não me prenderam no templo, onde eu estava todos os dias? Mas este momento é vosso; é a hora em que domina o poder das trevas.54 Agarraram-no e levaram-no à residência do supremo sacerdote. Pedro seguia-o à distância. Acenderam uma fogueira no pátio e as pessoas sentaram-se em volta para se aquecerem. Pedro juntou-se a eles.56 Reparando na sua presença, uma criada pôs-se a olhá-lo e disse: Esse estava com Jesus!57 Pedro negou: Mulher, nem sequer o conheço!58 Dali a pouco, mais alguém olhou para ele e exclamou: Também tu deves ser um dos tais!Não senhor, não sou, respondeu Pedro.59 Decorrida cerca de uma hora, ainda outra pessoa afirmou abertamente: Sei que este é um dos discípulos de Jesus, até porque ambos são da Galileia.60 Mas Pedro disse: Homem, não sei o que estás aí a dizer. E, enquanto pronunciava estas palavras, cantou um galo.61 Naquele instante, Jesus voltou-se e olhou para Pedro. Então este lembrou-se do que ele dissera: Antes que o galo cante negar-me-ás três vezes. E, saindo do pátio, chorou amargamente.63 Os guardas que estavam a tomar conta de Jesus começaram a fazer pouco dele, tapando-lhe os olhos, batiam-lhe e davam-lhe socos, perguntando-lhe: Diz lá quem te bateu agora, se és profeta? E insultavam-no de muitas outras maneiras.66 Ao romper do dia, reuniu-se o supremo tribunal judaico, em que tinham assento os principais dos sacerdotes e as autoridades religiosas. Jesus foi conduzido perante esta assembleia e intimado a responder. Diz lá, tu és o Cristo? Ele respondeu: Se vo-lo disser, não acreditarão em mim nem me deixarão defender-me.69 Mas em breve virá o tempo em que o Filho do Homem será posto num trono à direita de Deus todo-poderoso.70 Logo todos gritaram: Afirmas, então, que és o Filho de Deus? E Jesus respondeu: Estão certos em dizer que sou.71 Que necessidade temos nós de outras testemunhas?, exclamaram. Nós próprios ouvimos o que ele disse.

1 Now the feast of unleavened bread drew nigh, which is called the Passover.2 And the chief priests and scribes sought how they might kill him: for they feared the people.3 Then Satan entered into Judas surnamed Iscariot, being of the number of the twelve.4 And he went, and communed with the chief priests and captains, how he might betray him to them.5 And they were glad, and covenanted to give him money.6 And he promised, and sought opportunity to betray him to them in the absence of the multitude.7 Then came the day of unleavened bread, when the passover must be killed.8 And he sent Peter and John, saying, Go and prepare for us the passover, that we may eat.9 And they said to him, Where wilt thou that we prepare?10 And he said to them, Behold, when ye have entered into the city, there shall a man meet you, bearing a pitcher of water; follow him into the house where he entereth.11 And ye shall say to the master of the house, The Master saith to thee, Where is the guest-chamber, where I may eat the passover with my disciples?12 And he will show you a large upper room furnished: there make ready.13 And they went and found as he had said to them: and they made ready the passover.14 And when the hour was come, he sat down, and the twelve apostles with him.15 And he said to them, I have earnestly desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer.16 For I say to you, I will not any more eat of it until it shall be fulfilled in the kingdom of God.17 And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, Take this, and divide it among yourselves.18 For I say to you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine, until the kingdom of God shall come.19 And he took bread, and gave thanks, and broke it, and gave to them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me.20 Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you.21 But behold, the hand of him that betrayeth me is with me on the table.22 And truly the Son of man goeth as it was determined: but woe to that man by whom he is betrayed!23 And they began to inquire among themselves, which of them it was that should do this thing.24 And there was also a strife among them, which of them should be accounted the greatest.25 And he said to them, The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and they that exercise authority upon them, are called benefactors.26 But ye shall not be so: but he that is greatest among you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that doth serve.27 For which is greater, he that sitteth at table, or he that serveth? is not he that sitteth at table? but I am among you as he that serveth.28 Ye are they who have continued with me in my temptations.29 And I appoint to you a kingdom, as my Father hath appointed to me;30 That ye may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.31 And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat:32 But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not; and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.33 And he said to him, Lord, I am ready to go with thee both into prison, and to death.34 And he said, I tell thee, Peter, the cock will not crow this day, before thou wilt thrice deny that thou knowest me.35 And he said to them, When I sent you without purse, and sack, and shoes, lacked ye any thing? And they said, Nothing.36 Then said he to them, But now he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his sack: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one.37 For I say to you, that this which is written must yet be accomplished in me, And he was reckoned among the transgressors: for the things concerning me have an end.38 And they said, Lord, behold, here are two swords. And he said to them, It is enough.39 And he came out, and went, as he was wont, to the mount of Olives; and his disciples also followed him.40 And when he was at the place, he said to them, Pray, that ye enter not into temptation.41 And he was withdrawn from them about a stone's cast, and kneeled down, and prayed.42 Saying, Father, if thou art willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine be done.43 And there appeared to him an angel from heaven, strengthening him.44 And being in an agony, he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling to the ground.45 And when he arose from prayer, and had come to his disciples, he found them sleeping for sorrow:46 And said to them, Why sleep ye? rise and pray, lest ye enter into temptation.47 And while he was yet speaking, behold a multitude, and he that was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them, and drew near to Jesus to kiss him.48 But Jesus said to him, Judas, betrayest thou the Son of man with a kiss?49 When they who were about him, saw what would follow, they said to him, Lord, shall we smite with the sword?50 And one of them smote the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear.51 And Jesus answered and said, Suffer ye thus far. And he touched his ear, and healed him.52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests, and captains of the temple, and the elders who had come to him, Are ye come out as against a thief, with swords and staffs?53 When I was daily with you in the temple, ye stretched forth no hands against me: but this is your hour, and the power of darkness.54 Then they took him, and led him, and brought him into the high priest's house. And Peter followed at a distance.55 And when they had kindled a fire in the midst of the hall, and were set down together, Peter sat down among them.56 But a certain maid beheld him as he sat by the fire, and earnestly looked upon him, and said, This man was also with him.57 And he denied him, saying, Woman, I know him not.58 And after a little while another saw him, and said, Thou art also of them. And Peter said, Man, I am not.59 And about the space of one hour after, another confidently affirmed, saying, In truth this man also was with him; for he is a Galilean.60 And Peter said, Man, I know not what thou sayest. And immediately, while he was yet speaking, the cock crowed.61 And the Lord turned, and looked upon Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said to him, Before the cock shall crow, thou wilt deny me thrice.62 And Peter went out, and wept bitterly.63 And the men that held Jesus, mocked him, and smote him.64 And when they had blindfolded him, they struck him on the face, and asked him, saying, Prophesy, who is it that smote thee?65 And many other things blasphemously they spoke against him.66 And as soon as it was day, the elders of the people, and the chief priests, and the scribes came together, and led him into their council,67 Saying, Art thou the Christ? tell us. And he said to them, If I tell you, ye will not believe.68 And if I also ask you, ye will not answer me, nor let me go.69 Hereafter will the Son of man sit on the right hand of the power of God.70 Then said they all, Art thou then the Son of God? And he said to them, Ye say that I am.71 And they said, What need have we of any further testimony? for we ourselves have heard from his own mouth.
