1 Certo dia, Jesus reuniu os seus doze apóstolos e deu-lhes autoridade sobre os demónios, poder para os expulsar, e para curar as enfermidades. Em seguida, enviou-os para falar a toda a gente na vinda do reino de Deus e para curar os doentes.3 Não levem convosco nem sequer um bordão, recomendou-lhes, nem saco, nem provisões, nem dinheiro, nem mesmo roupa para mudar. Hospedem-se apenas numa casa em cada localidade. Se o povo de qualquer povoação não vos quiser ouvir quando lá entrarem, venham-se embora e declarem a severidade de Deus contra ela, limpando os sapatos do pó daquela terra, ao saírem.6 Começaram então essa digressão pelas povoações, pregando as boas novas e curando os doentes.7 Quando soube dos milagres de Jesus, o governador Herodes ficou preocupado, pois já havia quem dissesse: É João Baptista que tornou à vida, e outros: É Elias ou outro antigo profeta que se levantou de entre os mortos. Estes boatos corriam por todo o país.9 Se degolei João, disse Herodes, quem será este homem de quem me contam tais histórias? E procurava ver Jesus.10 Quando os apóstolos voltaram para contar a Jesus o que tinham feito, este saiu com eles para um sítio isolado, para os lados da povoação de Betsaida. O povo, porém, descobriu para onde se dirigia e seguiu-o. Ele acolheu-os, ensinando-os acerca do reino de Deus e curando os doentes.12 No fim da tarde, os doze discípulos vieram recomendar-lhe que mandasse o povo retirar-se para as aldeias e quintas dos arredores a fim da arranjarem abrigo para a noite e comida, porque aquele era um lugar deserto.13 Mas Jesus respondeu: Dêem-lhe vocês comida.Como, se temos apenas cinco pães e dois peixes ao todo?, protestaram. Onde é que iríamos agora buscar alimento suficiente para toda esta multidão?,14 pois havia ali uns cinco mil homens.Digam-lhes que se sentem no chão em grupos de cerca de cinquenta cada, mandou Jesus.15 E assim fizeram. Tomando os cinco pães e os dois peixes, Jesus ergueu o olhar para o céu e deu graças. Depois, partiu-os em pedaços para que os discípulos os oferecessem à multidão. E toda a gente comeu até se fartar, recolhendo-se depois de tudo, doze cestos cheios de sobras!18 Um dia, estando sozinho a orar e encontrando-se os discípulos ali perto, Jesus aproximou-se e perguntou-lhes: Quem diz o povo que eu sou?19 Responderam-lhe: João Baptista, ou talvez Elias, ou outro dos antigos profetas que se terá levantado de entre os mortos.20 E vocês, quem pensam que eu sou? E Pedro respondeu:Tu és o Messias, o Cristo de Deus!21 Jesus deu-lhes ordens rigorosas para não falarem nisso a ninguém. Esperam-me grandes sofrimentos, a mim o Filho do Homem; serei rejeitado pelos anciãos do povo, os principais dos sacerdotes e os mestres da lei, e serei morto. Mas três dias depois tornarei a viver!23 E então disse à multidão: Aquele que me quiser seguir deve esquecer-se a si próprio, carregar com a sua cruz em cada dia, e acompanhar-me de perto!24 Quem quiser abandonar os seus próprios propósitos por minha causa, ganhará uma verdadeira vida; mas quem teimar em viver conforme os seus próprios desejos acabará por perdê-la.25 E que proveito há em ganhar mesmo que seja o mundo inteiro se isso significa perder-se a si mesmo?26 Quando eu, o Filho do Homem, vier na minha glória e na do Pai e dos santos anjos, afastar- me-ei de todos os que agora se envergonham de mim e das minhas palavras.27 Porém, a verdade é que alguns dos que aqui se encontram não morrerão senão depois de verem o reino de Deus!28 Oito dias depois, levou consigo Pedro, Tiago e João e subiu a um monte para orar. Enquanto orava, o seu rosto começou a brilhar, e o vestuário ficou de uma brancura resplandecente de luz. Viram-se então dois homens, Moisés e Elias, que começaram a conversar com ele! O aspecto deles era glorioso, e falavam da sua morte, que iria ocorrer em Jerusalém.32 Pedro e os outros, de tão cheios de sono que estavam, adormeceram. Ao acordarem, viram Jesus rodeado de resplendor e glória, e os dois homens com ele. Quando Moisés e Elias se iam retirar, Pedro, não sabendo o que dizer, falou assim: Mestre, que bom é estarmos aqui! Vamos construir três abrigos, um para ti, um para Moisés e outro para Elias!34 Mas no momento em que dizia isto, uma nuvem formou-se por cima deles e encheram-se de terror quando a nuvem os envolveu.35 Uma voz saída da nuvem disse: Este é o meu Filho, a quem escolhi; ouçam-no.36 Quando a voz se calou, Jesus estava de novo sozinho com os discípulos, que só mais tarde contaram o que tinham visto.37 No outro dia, quando desceram do monte, veio ao seu encontro uma grande multidão, e um homem gritou-lhe:39 Mestre, este menino que aqui está é o meu único filho. E há um demónio que toma conta dele e o faz gritar, abanando-o todo, com violência, a ponto de espumar pela boca. Esse demónio fá-lo ferir-se constantemente, e não o deixa em paz. Já roguei aos teus discípulos que o expulsassem, mas não foram capazes.41 Ó gente teimosa e sem fé!, disse Jesus, até quando terei de vos supor-tar? E para o homem: Traz cá o teu filho.42 Quando a criança se aproximava, o demónio atirou-a por terra numa violenta agitação. Mas Jesus, ordenando-lhe que saísse, curou o menino e entregou-o ao pai.43 O espanto apoderou-se do povo ao ver esta manifestação do poder de Deus. Entretanto, enquanto se admiravam das coisas maravilhosas que ele fazia, Jesus disse aos discípulos:44 Ouçam-me e lembrem-se do que vos vou dizer. Eu, o Filho do Homem, vou ser traído. Os discípulos, porém, não percebiam aquilo a que se referia, porque tinham a mente fechada e receavam fazer-lhe perguntas.46 Surgiu, então, entre eles uma discussão sobre qual dos discípulos seria o maior. Jesus, contudo, conhecendo-lhes os pensamentos, colocou uma criancinha ao seu lado e disse-lhes:48 Todo aquele que acolher uma criancinha como esta é como me acolhesse a mim. E quem me receber, recebe também Deus que me enviou. O mais insignificante de entre vocês, esse é o maior.49 João foi ter com ele e disse-lhe: Mestre, vimos alguém que se servia do teu nome para expulsar demónios e dissemos-lhe que não fizesse isso. Ao fim e ao cabo, não pertence ao nosso grupo.50 Mas Jesus disse-lhe: Não deviam ter feito isso, porque quem não está contra nós põe-se do nosso lado.51 À medida que se aproximava o momento de regressar ao céu, Jesus mostrava-se decidido a ir a Jerusalém.52 Um dia, enviou mensageiros à sua frente a fim de reservar hospedagem numa localidade samaritana.53 Todavia, aí mandaram-nos embora. O povo do lugar não quis nada com eles porque viram que se dirigiam para Jerusalém .54 Quando veio a notícia do que tinha acontecido, Tiago e João perguntaram a Jesus: Mestre, devíamos pedir que caia fogo do céu para os queimar?55 Mas Jesus voltou-se e repreendeu-o, e assim prosseguiram até chegarem a outra terra.57 Quando iam a passar, alguém disse a Jesus: Seguir-te-ei sempre aonde quer que fores.58 Mas Jesus respondeu: Olha que eu nem sequer tenho onde pousar a cabeça! As raposas têm as suas tocas, e os pássaros os seus ninhos, mas eu, o Filho do Homem, não tenho nenhum lar terreno.59 Ele disse a outro homem: Segue-me. Este aceitou, mas na condição de esperar até que o pai morresse primeiro .60 Jesus respondeu: Aqueles que são espiritualmente mortos que se preocupem com coisas dessas . Tu deves ir anunciar o reino de Deus.61 Ainda outro disse: Sim, Senhor, irei, mas deixa-me primeiro despedir-me da família.62 Todo aquele que lança mão do arado e depois olha para trás não está pronto para o reino de Deus.

1 Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all demons, and to cure diseases.2 And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick.3 And he said to them, Take nothing for your journey, neither staffs, nor bag, neither bread, neither money; neither have two coats apiece.4 And into whatever house ye enter, there abide, and thence depart.5 And whoever will not receive you, when ye go out of that city, shake off the very dust from your feet for a testimony against them.6 And they departed, and went through the towns, preaching the gospel, and healing every where.7 Now Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was done by him: and he was perplexed, because that it was said by some, that John had risen from the dead;8 And by some, that Elijah had appeared; and by others, that one of the ancient prophets had risen again.9 And Herod said, John have I beheaded; but who is this of whom I hear such things? And he desired to see him.10 And the apostles, when they had returned, told him all that they had done. And he took them, and went aside privately into a desert place, belonging to the city called Bethsaida.11 And the people, when they knew it, followed him: and he received them, and spoke to them of the kingdom of God, and healed them that had need of healing.12 And when the day began to decline, then came the twelve, and said to him, Send the multitude away, that they may go into the towns and country around, and lodge, and get victuals: for we are here in a desert place.13 But he said to them, Give ye them to eat. And they said, We have no more than five loaves and two fishes; except we should go and buy provisions for all this people.14 For they were about five thousand men. And he said to his disciples, Make them sit down by fifties in a company.15 And they did so, and made them all sit down.16 Then he took the five loaves, and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed them, and broke, and gave to the disciples to set before the multitude.17 And they ate, and were all satisfied: and there was taken up of fragments that remained to them, twelve baskets.18 And it came to pass, as he was in retirement praying, his disciples were with him; and he asked them, saying, Who say the people that I am?19 They answering, said, John the Baptist; but some say, Elijah; and others say, that one of the ancient prophets is risen again.20 He said to them, But who say ye that I am? Peter answering, said, Christ of God.21 And he strictly charged them, and commanded them to tell no man that thing,22 Saying, The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders, and chief priests, and scribes, and be put to death, and be raised the third day.23 And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.24 For whoever will save his life, shall lose it: but whoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it.25 For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away?26 For whoever shall be ashamed of me, and of my words, of him will the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and in that of his Father, and of the holy angels.27 But I tell you in truth, there are some standing here who shall not taste death till they see the kingdom of God.28 And it came to pass, about eight days after these sayings, he took Peter, and John, and James, and went up upon a mountain to pray.29 And as he prayed, the fashion of his countenance was altered, and his raiment was white and glistening.30 And behold, there talked with him two men, who were Moses and Elijah.31 Who appeared in glory, and spoke of his decease which he should accomplish at Jerusalem.32 But Peter and they that were with him were heavy with sleep: and when they were awake, they saw his glory, and the two men that stood with him.33 And it came to pass, as they departed from him, Peter said to Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah: not knowing what he said.34 While he was thus speaking, there came a cloud and overshadowed them: and they feared as they entered into the cloud.35 And there came a voice out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him.36 And when the voice was past, Jesus was found alone. And they kept it close, and told no man in those days any of those things which they had seen.37 And it came to pass, that on the next day, when they had come down from the hill, many people met him.38 And behold, a man of the company cried out, saying, Master, I beseech thee look upon my son: for he is my only child.39 And lo, a spirit taketh him, and he suddenly crieth out; and it teareth him that he foameth, and bruising him, hardly departeth from him.40 And I besought thy disciples to cast him out, and they could not.41 And Jesus answering, said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you, and suffer you? Bring thy son hither.42 And as he was yet coming, the demon threw him down, and tore him. And Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the child, and delivered him again to his father.43 And they were all amazed at the mighty power of God. But while they were all wondering at all things which Jesus did, he said to his disciples,44 Let these sayings sink down into your ears: for the Son of man will be delivered into the hands of men.45 But they understood not this saying, and it was hid from them, that they perceived it not: and they feared to ask him concerning that saying.46 Then there arose a reasoning among them, which of them should be greatest.47 And Jesus perceiving the thought of their heart, took a child, and set him by him,48 And said to them, Whoever shall receive this child in my name, receiveth me; and whoever shall receive me, receiveth him that sent me: for he that is least among you all, the same shall be great.49 And John answered and said, Master, we saw one casting out demons in thy name; and we forbad him, because he followeth not with us.50 And Jesus said to him, Forbid him not: for he that is not against us, is for us.51 And it came to pass, when the time was come that he should be received up, he steadfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem,52 And sent messengers before his face: and they went and entered into a village of the Samaritans, to make ready for him.53 And they did not receive him, because his face was as though he would go to Jerusalem.54 And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elijah did?55 But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of.56 For the Son of man is not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them. And they went to another village.57 And it came to pass, that as they were going in the way, a certain man said to him, Lord, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest.58 And Jesus said to him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.59 And he said to another, Follow me. But he said, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father.60 Jesus said to him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God.61 And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go and bid them farewell who are at my house.62 And Jesus said to him, No man having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.
