1 Mas, na madrugada de domingo, ao levarem os produtos para o túmulo verificaram que a enorme pedra que tapava a entrada tinha sido removida.3 Entraram, mas o corpo do Senhor Jesus tinha desaparecido!4 Ficaram perplexas. De súbito apareceram dois homens vestidos de roupas reluzentes.5 As mulheres ficaram cheias de medo, com os olhos postos no chão. E aqueles homens perguntaram: Porque procuram no túmulo quem afinal está vivo?6 Ele não está aqui, ressuscitou! Não se lembram do que ele vos disse na Galileia, que o Filho do Homem seria traído, entregue a gente má e crucificado, e que tornaria a viver ao terceiro dia?8 Então elas lembraram-se, e voltaram a correr para Jerusalém, para contar aos onze apóstolos, e aos outros, o que tinha acontecido. As mulheres que foram ao túmulo eram Maria Madalena, Joana, Maria, mãe de Tiago, e várias outras. Tudo aquilo, porém, parecia às pessoas uma história sem sentido, e não acreditaram nela. Mesmo assim, Pedro foi a correr até ao túmulo para averiguar o que se passava. Curvando-se, espreitou e, ao ver o lençol abandonado, voltou para casa, perguntando a si próprio que teria sucedido.13 Naquele mesmo dia dois dos seguidores de Jesus iam a caminho da aldeia de Emaús, uns onze quilómetros de distância de Jerusalém. E comentavam entre si tudo o que acontecera. De repente Jesus apareceu e juntou-se a eles, caminhando ao seu lado. Mas eles não sabiam que era Jesus porque Deus impediu-os de o reconhecerem.17 O que é que vão aí a discutir?, perguntou. O que é que vos preocupa assim?18 Um deles, Cleopas, respondeu: Deves ser a única pessoa em toda a cidade de Jerusalém que não soube das terríveis coisas que ali sucederam nestes últimos dias.19 Que coisas?, perguntou Jesus.O que aconteceu a Jesus de Nazaré. Era um profeta de Deus que fez milagres poderosos e, além disso, era um grande ensinador, altamente considerado tanto por Deus como pelos homens.20 Mas os principais dos sacerdotes e os nossos chefes prenderam-no e entregaram-no ao governador romano para ser condenado à morte, e crucificaram-no. E nós pensávamos que ele era o Messias que vinha para libertar Israel!22 Para além disto que aconteceu há três dias, umas mulheres do nosso grupo de seguidores seus foram ao túmulo onde foi posto, de manhã cedo, e regressaram com a notícia de que o seu corpo desaparecera e de que tinham visto lá uns anjos que lhes disseram que Jesus se encontrava vivo! Alguns dos nossos homens foram a correr ver o que se teria passado, e não há dúvida de que o corpo de Jesus desapareceu, tal como disseram as mulheres.25 Então Jesus respondeu-lhes: Mas vocês não estão a ser sensatos! É assim tão difícil para vocês crer em tudo o que os profetas escreveram nas Escrituras? Não foi claramente predito por eles que o Cristo teria de sofrer todas estas coisas antes de entrar na sua glória? E fez-lhes compreender as Escrituras, começando com os livros de Moisés e através das Escrituras, explicando o que esses textos diziam a respeito de si.28 Entretanto, aproximavam-se da localidade para onde iam. Jesus parecia querer prosseguir no caminho, mas pediram-lhe que ficasse com eles porque se estava a fazer tarde, ao que acedeu.30 Quando se sentaram para comer, ele pediu a bênção de Deus sobre o alimento, e depois, pegando num pequeno pão, partiu-o e distribuiu-o por eles. Foi então que, de repente, os olhos se lhes abriram e o reconheceram. E naquele preciso momento ele desapareceu.32 Começaram, pois, a lembrar-se de como os seus corações se tinham animado enquanto ele lhes falava, explicando-lhes as Escrituras, pela estrada fora.33 Voltaram logo outra vez para Jerusalém, onde os onze discípulos e os outros seguidores de Jesus os receberam com estas palavras: Não há dúvida de que o Senhor ressuscitou! Apareceu a Pedro!35 Os dois de Emaús contaram como Jesus lhes aparecera também enquanto seguiam pela estrada, e como o tinham reconhecido quando partiu o pão.36 Enquanto assim falavam, o próprio Jesus surgiu no meio deles, saudando-os: A paz esteja com vocês!. Mas todo o grupo ficou muito assustado, pensando que via um fantasma.38 Porque se assustam?, perguntou ele. Porque é que duvidam que seja realmente eu? Olhem as minhas mãos; olhem-me para os pés! Estão a ver que sou eu mesmo. Toquem-me e verifiquem que não sou nenhum fantasma. Porque os fantasmas não têm carne nem ossos, como vêem que eu tenho! Enquanto falava, mostrava-lhes as mãos e os pés.41 Ainda indecisos, eles contemplavam-no, cheios de espanto e alegria. Então Jesus perguntou-lhes: Têm aqui alguma coisa que se possa comer? Deram-lhe um pedaço de peixe assado e pôs-se a comê-lo enquanto o observavam.44 Então disse-lhes: Quando andava convosco, não se lembram de vos ter dito que tudo o que se escreveu acerca de mim, nos livros de Moisés, nos escritos dos profetas e nos Salmos, se terá de realizar?45 Então abriu-lhes o entendimento para compreenderem as Escrituras:46 Estava escrito que o Cristo deveria sofrer, morrer e ressuscitar ao terceiro dia; e que em seu nome se pregaria o arrependimento e o perdão dos pecados em todo o mundo, começando por Jerusalém.48 Vocês viram como esses escritos sagrados se cumpriram.49 Agora vou mandar-vos o Espírito Santo para que desça sobre vocês, tal como prometeu meu Pai. Permaneçam aqui na cidade até que o Espírito Santo vos encha de poder do céu.50 Jesus levou-os pelo caminho de Betânia e, levantando as mãos para o céu, abençoou-os. Então afastou-se deles e elevou-se até ao céu. Eles adoraram-no e regressaram a Jerusalém, cheios de alegria. E estavam continuamente no templo, louvando Deus.

1 Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came to the sepulcher, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them.2 And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulcher.3 And they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus.4 And it came to pass, as they were much perplexed at this, behold, two men stood by them in shining garments.5 And as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said to them, Why seek ye the living among the dead?6 He is not here, but is risen. Remember how he spoke to you when he was yet in Galilee,7 Saying, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.8 And they remembered his words,9 And returned from the sepulcher, and told all these things to the eleven, and to all the rest.10 It was Mary Magdalene, and Joanna, and Mary the mother of James, and other women that were with them, who told these things to the apostles.11 And their words seemed to them as idle tales, and they believed them not.12 Then Peter arose, and ran to the sepulcher, and stooping down, he beheld the linen clothes laid by themselves, and departed, wondering in himself at that which had come to pass.13 And behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem about sixty furlongs.14 And they talked together of all these things which had happened.15 And it came to pass, that, while they communed together, and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near, and went with them.16 But their eyes were held, that they should not know him.17 And he said to them, What manner of communications are these that ye have one to another, as ye walk, and are sad?18 And one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answering, said to him, Art thou only a stranger in Jerusalem, and hast not known the things which have come to pass there in these days?19 And he said to them, What things? And they said to him, Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God, and all the people:20 And how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and crucified him.21 But we trusted that it had been he who would have redeemed Israel: and besides all this, to-day is the third day since these things were done.22 Yes, and certain women also of our company made us astonished, who were early at the sepulcher.23 And when they found not his body, they came, saying, that they had also seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive.24 And certain of them who were with us, went to the sepulcher, and found it even so as the women had said: but him they saw not.25 Then he said to them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken!26 Ought not Christ to suffer these things, and to enter into his glory?27 And beginning at Moses, and all the prophets, he expounded to them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.28 And they drew nigh to the village whither they were going: and he made as though he would go further.29 But they constrained him, saying, Abide with us: for it is towards evening, and the day is far spent. And he went in to tarry with them.30 And it came to pass, as he sat at table with them, he took bread, and blessed it, and broke, and gave to them.31 And their eyes were opened, and they knew him: and he vanished out of their sight.32 And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?33 And they rose the same hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven assembled, and them that were with them,34 Saying, The Lord is risen indeed, and hath appeared to Simon.35 And they told what things were done in the way, and how he was known to them in breaking of bread.36 And as they were thus speaking, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them, and saith to them, Peace be to you.37 But they were terrified and affrighted, and supposed that they had seen a spirit.38 And he said to them, Why are ye troubled? and why do thoughts arise in your hearts?39 Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have.40 And when he had thus spoken, he showed them his hands and his feet.41 And while they yet believed not for joy, and wondered, he said to them, Have ye here any thing for food?42 And they gave him a piece of a broiled fish, and a honey-comb.43 And he took it, and ate before them.44 And he said to them, These are the words which I spoke to you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.45 Then he opened their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures,46 And said to them, Thus it is written, and thus it behooved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day:47 And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.48 And ye are witnesses of these things.49 And behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye are endued with power from on high.50 And he led them out as far as to Bethany: and he lifted up his hands, and blessed them.51 And it came to pass, while he was blessing them, he was parted from them, and carried up into heaven.52 And they worshiped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy:53 And were continually in the temple, praising and blessing God.
