1 Passados vários dias, voltou a Cafarnaum e a notícia da sua chegada depressa se espalhou pela cidade. Logo a casa onde estava ficou tão cheia de visitantes que não havia já espaço para mais uma pessoa que fosse, nem sequer do lado de fora. E Jesus anunciava-lhes a mensagem de Deus3 Chegaram então quatro homens que carregavam com um paralítico numa padiola. Como não pudessem chegar junto de Jesus através da multidão, abriram o tecto por cima donde se encontrava, e por ali baixaram o doente deitado na cama, bem na sua frente. Quando Jesus viu como eles acreditavam firmemente em como curaria o seu amigo, disse ao doente: Filho, os teus pecados estão perdoados!6 Alguns dos mestres da lei que ali estavam sentados diziam entre si:7 Mas que blasfémia! Acaso ele imaginará que é Deus? Só Deus pode perdoar os pecados.8 Lendo o seu pensamento, Jesus disse-lhes: Porque é que se preocupam com isto? Que será mais difícil, dizer ao paralítico: 'Os teus pecados estão perdoados10 Portanto, vou provar-vos que o Filho do Homem tem autoridade para perdoar os pecados; e, voltando-se para o paralítico, disse-lhe: t11 Estás curado. Pega na tua cama e vai para casa!12 O homem pôs-se de pé e, apanhando a enxerga, abriu caminho através das pessoas que ali se encontravam, que ficaram pasmadas! Como louvavam Deus! Nunca vimos nada assim!, diziam todos.13 Depois, foi de novo para a praia, ensinando o povo reunido à sua volta. Enquanto por ali andava, viu Levi (filho de Alfeu) sentado junto à barraca onde cobrava impostos, e disse-lhe: Vem comigo e sê meu discípulo. Levi levantou-se e logo foi com ele.15 Naquela noite, Levi convidou diversos cobradores de impostos e muita outra gente conhecida pela sua má conduta para jantarem com ele. Aliás, havia muitos homens desta espécie entre o povo que seguia Jesus.ÿ16 Mas quando alguns dos escribas e fariseus o viram comer com essa gente de má fama, disseram aos discípulos: Como pode ele comer com gente tão má?17 Ouvindo o que diziam, Jesus respondeu-lhes: Quem precisa de médico são os doentes e não os que têm saúde! Vim chamar, não os bons, mas os maus.18 Os discípulos de João e os fariseus jejuavam. Certo dia, foram ter com Jesus e perguntaram-lhe porque não faziam os seus discípulos o mesmo que eles.19 Jesus replicou: Será que num casamento os amigos do noivo se recusam a comer na festa de casamento ou andam tristes enquanto o noivo está na sua companhia? Claro que não.20 Mas lá virá o momento em que ele lhes será tirado e então jejuarão.21 É como remendar roupa velha com um pedaço de pano que ainda não encolheu. O remendo repuxa o tecido e o buraco fica pior do que antes. Sabem que não convém pôr vinho novo em odres velhos, senão estes rebentam. O vinho espalha-se e os odres ficam estragados. Para vinho novo, odres novos.23 Noutra ocasião, num sábado, enquanto Jesus e os seus discípulos atravessavam os campos, estes arrancavam espigas de trigo e comiam o grão. Alguns dos fariseus disseram então a Jesus: Eles não deviam fazer isso! É contra as nossas leis colher grão no dia de sábado.25 Nunca ouviram que, quando o rei David e seus companheiros estavam com fome, ele entrou na casa de Deus - era então Abiatar o sacerdote principal - e todos comeram o pão consagrado, que só os sacerdotes podiam comer? Também aquilo era contra a lei. Mas o sábado foi feito em benefício do homem; o homem não foi feito por causa do sábado. E eu, o Filho do Homem, tenho autoridade até para decidir o que se pode fazer no sábado!

1 And again he entered into Capernaum, after some days; and it was understood that he was in the house.2 And forthwith many were assembled, so that there was no room to receive them, no not so much as about the door: and he preached the word to them.3 And they come to him, bringing one sick with the palsy, who was borne by four.4 And when they could not come nigh to him by reason of the crowd, they uncovered the roof where he was: and when they had broken it up, they let down the bed on which the sick with the palsy lay.5 When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the sick with the palsy, Son, thy sins are forgiven thee.6 But there were certain of the scribes sitting there, and reasoning in their hearts,7 Why doth this man thus speak blasphemies? who can forgive sins but God only?8 And immediately, when Jesus perceived in his spirit that they so reasoned within themselves, he said to them, Why reason ye these things in your hearts?9 Which is easier, to say to the sick with the palsy, Thy sins are forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and take up thy bed, and walk?10 But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, he saith to the sick with the palsy,11 I say to thee, Arise, and take up thy bed, and go into thy house.12 And immediately he arose, took up the bed, and went forth before them all; so that they were all amazed, and glorified God, saying, We never saw it on this fashion.13 And he went forth again by the sea-side; and all the multitude resorted to him, and he taught them.14 And as he passed by, he saw Levi the son of Alpheus, sitting at the receipt of custom, and said to him, Follow me. And he arose, and followed him.15 And it came to pass, that as Jesus sat at table in his house, many publicans and sinners sat also together with Jesus and his disciples; for there were many, and they followed him.16 And when the scribes and Pharisees saw him eating with publicans and sinners, they said to his disciples, How is it that he eateth and drinketh with publicans and sinners.17 When Jesus heard it, he saith to them, They that are in health, have no need of a physician, but they that are sick; I came not to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.18 And the disciples of John, and of the Pharisees, used to fast: and they come, and say to him, Why do the disciples of John, and of the Pharisees fast, but thy disciples fast not?19 And Jesus said to them, Can the children of the bride-chamber fast, while the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast.20 But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken from them, and then they will fast in those days.21 No man also seweth a piece of new cloth on an old garment: else the new piece that filled it up, taketh away from the old, and the rent is made worse.22 And no man putteth new wine into old bottles, else the new wine doth burst the bottles, and the wine is spilled, and the bottles will be marred: but new wine must be put into new bottles.23 And it came to pass, that he went through the corn-fields on the sabbath; and his disciples began, as they went, to pluck the ears of corn.24 And the Pharisees said to him, Behold, why do they on the sabbath that which is not lawful?25 And he said to them, Have ye never read what David did, when he had need, and was hungry, he and they that were with him?26 How he went into the house of God, in the days of Abiathar the high priest, and ate the show-bread, which it is not lawful to eat, but for the priests, and gave also to them who were with him?27 And he said to them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath:28 Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.
