1 Recebam sempre o melhor possível qualquer irmão, ainda que fraco na sua fé. Não discutam com ele sobre os seus escrúpulos.2 Uns crêem que se pode comer de tudo; mas outros há que pensarão que isso não está certo e irão ao ponto de comer só vegetais.3 E aqueles que não acham mal comer de tudo não devem desprezar os que apenas comem certas coisas, tal como também estes últimos não devem julgar os primeiros, porque Deus os aceitou como filhos4 Eles são servos de Deus, e não vossos. É a Deus que dão contas, não a vocês. Por isso deixem que seja Deus a dizer-lhes se fazem bem ou mal. E Deus pode certamente levá-los a fazer o que devem.5 Há também pessoas que pensam que os cristãos deveriam respeitar dias de festa dos judeus, como ocasiões especiais de adoração a Deus; mas outras pensam que todos os dias são igualmente ocasiões de servir Deus. Cada pessoa deve ter a sua convicção sobre este assunto.6 Afinal, aqueles que querem assinalar de forma especial determinados dias fazem-no para adorar Deus. Da mesma forma, quem come de tudo, sem escrúpulos de consciência, fá-lo também para o Senhor; a prova é que dá graças a Deus por aquilo que come. A pessoa que recusa certos alimentos, se faz assim é também porque está desejosa de agradar ao Senhor, estando igualmente grata a Deus.7 Nós não somos donos de nós mesmos, de forma a vivermos ou morrermos segundo a nossa vontade ou conveniência8 Quer vivamos, quer morramos, somos do Senhor, dependemos da sua vontade. Quando morrermos, iremos estar com o Senhor. Por isso, tanto na vida como na morte, pertencemos ao Senhor.9 Foi para isto mesmo aliás que Cristo morreu e ressuscitou, para ser Senhor das nossas vidas, quer vivamos, quer morramos.10 Vocês não têm o direito de julgar os vossos irmãos, ou de os criticar com superioridade. Lembrem-se de que cada um de nós terá de prestar contas perante o tribunal de Deus.12 Sim, cada um dará contas de si mesmo a Deus13 Por isso não se critiquem mais uns aos outros. Em vez disso, procurem viver de tal modo que nada do que fazem possa levar o vosso irmão a pecar, ou a ficar perturbado na sua consciência.14 Quanto a mim pessoalmente, estou certo, porque assim mo ensinou o Senhor Jesus, de que não há nada de mal em comer comida considerada imunda pela lei. Contudo, se alguém pensa o contrário deverá fazer segundo a sua consciência, porque para ele é mal.15 E se o teu irmão pode perturbar-se na sua consciência por aquilo que tu comes, não estarás a dar provas do amor de Deus em ti, se continuares a comer disso. Não faças com que aquilo que comes leve a perder aquele por quem Cristo morreu.16 Não faças nada que te leve a ser criticado ainda que por coisas que sabes que estão certas.17 Porque o reino de Deus não é uma questão do que comemos ou bebemos, mas de vivermos uma vida de bondade e paz e alegria no Espírito Santo.218 Porque quem serve Cristo desta maneira dará alegria a Deus e será estimado pelos homens.19 Tenham sempre como objectivo a paz uns com os outros, assim como o progresso da vida espiritual de cada um20 Não desfaçam a obra de Deus na vida de um irmão vosso por uma questão de comida. Lembrem-se que não há nenhum mal naquilo que se come; o mal é quando aquilo que se come pode afectar a vida espiritual de alguém.21 Então o melhor a fazer será deixar de comer carne, ou de beber bebidas alcoólicas ou de fazer seja o que for que possa vir a afectar o vosso irmão e até levá-lo a pecar.22 Estás convencido de que perante Deus não há mal naquilo que fazes? Pois reserva essa tua convicção entre ti e Deus. Feliz é o homem, na verdade, que não se sente condenado quando faz o que sabe estar certo.-23 Mas se alguém tem dúvidas sobre se deve ou não comer alguma coisa, não deve comer. Seria condenado por não agir com fé perante Deus. Se fizer alguma coisa que julga não estar certa, está a pecar.

1 Him that is weak in the faith receive ye, but not to doubtful disputations.2 For one believeth that he may eat all things: another, who is weak, eateth herbs.3 Let not him that eateth, despise him that eateth not; and let not him who eateth not, judge him that eateth: for God hath received him.4 Who art thou that judgest another man's servant? to his own master he standeth or falleth: and he shall be held up: for God is able to make him stand.5 One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. He that eateth, eateth to the Lord, for he giveth God thanks; and he that eateth not, to the Lord he eateth not, and giveth God thanks.7 For none of us liveth to himself, and no man dieth to himself.8 For whether we live, we live to the Lord; and whether we die, we die to the Lord: whether we live therefore, or die, we are the Lord's.9 For to this end Christ both died, and rose, and revived, that he might be Lord both of the dead and the living.10 But why dost thou judge thy brother? or why dost thou set at naught thy brother? for we shall all stand before the judgment-seat of Christ.11 For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God.12 So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.13 Let us not therefore judge one another any more: but judge this rather, that no man put a stumbling-block, or an occasion to fall in his brother's way.14 I know, and am persuaded by the Lord Jesus, that there is nothing unclean by itself: but to him that esteemeth any thing to be unclean, to him it is unclean.15 But if thy brother is grieved with thy food, now walkest thou not charitably. Destroy not him with thy food, for whom Christ died.16 Let not then your good be evil spoken of:17 For the kingdom of God is not food and drink, but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit.18 For he that in these things serveth Christ, is acceptable to God, and approved by men.19 Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and things with which one may edify another.20 For the sake of food, destroy not the work of God. All things indeed are pure; but it is evil for that man who eateth with offense.21 It is good neither to eat flesh, nor to drink wine, nor any thing by which thy brother stumbleth, or is offended, or is made weak.22 Hast thou faith? have it to thyself before God. Happy is he that condemneth not himself in that thing which he alloweth.23 And he that doubteth is damned if he eateth, because he eateth not from faith: for whatever is not from faith is sin.
