1 E tu, quem quer que sejas, quando começas a julgá-los, não tens desculpa! Fazendo juízo sobre o comportamento deles, no fundo estás a condenar-te a ti mesmo, pois és capaz de fazer as mesmas coisas.2 E sabemos que, com justiça, Deus castigará todos os que praticarem tais coisas3 Pensas que Deus, que julgará e condenará esses pecadores, te poupará a ti, quando as praticares também?4 Não te apercebes da imensa paciência e benignidade que ele tem para contigo, suportando o teu pecado sem te castigar? Não és capaz de ver que a bondade de Deus procura levar-te ao arrependimento.5 Mas tu não queres ouvir; e por isso estás a acumular sobre ti mesmo um terrível castigo, devido à tua teimosia em recusar arrependeres-te dos teus pecados; pois virá um dia de cólera divina, quando o Senhor vier como justo juiz de todo o mundo. Recompensará então cada um segundo as suas obras.ÿ7 Dará a vida eterna àqueles que, com perseverança, fazem a sua vontade, procurando a glória invisível, a honra e a vida imortal que ele oferece8 Mas castigará e será severo para com aqueles que lutam contra a verdade divina e andam em caminhos de maldade; a ira de Deus derramar-se-á sobre eles9 Haverá tribulação e sofrimento, tanto para os judeus como para os outros povos que continuam no pecado,10 mas haverá glória, honra e paz para todos os que obedecem a Deus, sejam judeus, sejam gentios.11 Porque ele a todos trata da mesma maneira.12 Castigará os gentios quando pecarem, ainda que nunca tenham conhecido as leis escritas de Deus, porque no fundo dos seus corações eles sabem fazer a diferença entre o certo e o errado. As leis de Deus estão escritas dentro deles; as suas próprias consciências umas vezes os acusam, outras os defendem. E Deus castigará os judeus por pecarem, pois têm as suas leis escritas e não lhes obedecem. Sabem o que é justo e não o fazem. Pois a verdade é que os justos perante Deus não são os que sabem o que devem fazer, mas os que o fazem mesmo16 O dia virá, seguramente, em que Deus, por intermédio de Jesus Cristo, julgará a vida íntima de cada um. Tudo isto faz parte do evangelho de Deus que eu anuncio.17 Vocês, que se chamam judeus, pensam que tudo está em ordem entre vocês e Deus porque ele vos deu as suas leis e se sentem orgulhosos disso. É certo, sim, que vocês sabem qual a sua vontade; aprovam coisas excelentes porque foram instruídos nas suas leis. Pensam até poder guiar os que são como cegos; consideram-se como uma luz dos que vivem nas trevas. Julgam ser capazes de ensinar os ignorantes e as crianças nas coisas que se referem a Deus, porque conhecem realmente as suas leis que estão cheias de sabedoria e de verdade.21 Pois então, se vocês ensinam os outros, porque não se ensinam a si próprios? Dizem aos outros para não roubar, e roubam?22 Pregam que não se cometa adultério, e cometem-no? Abominam os ídolos, mas roubam templos pagãos?-23 Têm tanto orgulho nas leis de Deus, e desonram Deus, transgredindo-as.24 Não admira pois que, tal como já dizem as Escrituras: O meu nome é constantemente blasfemado, por causa de vocês.25 O ser judeu vale alguma coisa se se obedecer às leis de Deus, caso contrário não serão melhores do que os gentios. E se os gentios obedecem às leis de Deus, não lhes dará ele em consequência os privilégios que tinha planeado dar aos judeus?/27 De facto esses não-judeus, se cumprirem as leis de Deus, estarão melhor qualificados do que vocês judeus, que conhecem tanta coisa sobre Deus, que são objecto das suas promessas, mas que afinal não obedecem às suas leis.28 Não é só porque vocês nasceram de pais judeus ou porque passaram pela cerimónia da circuncisão, que se podem considerar realmente judeus!29 Um verdadeiro judeu é aquele que o é interiormente. A verdadeira circuncisão não é uma cirurgia no corpo mas uma mudança de coração produzida pelo espírito Santo. Esse receberá o louvor do Senhor, ainda que não receba o vosso.

1 Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whoever thou art, that judgest: for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest, doest the same things.2 But we are sure that the judgment of God is according to truth, against them who commit such things.3 And thinkest thou this, O man, that judgest them who do such things, and doest the same, that thou shalt escape the judgment of God?4 Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness, and forbearance, and long-suffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?5 But after thy hardness and impenitent heart, treasurest up to thyself wrath against the day of wrath, and revelation of the righteous judgment of God;6 Who will render to every man according to his deeds:7 To them who by patient continuance in well-doing, seek for glory, and honor, and immortality; eternal life:8 But to them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness; indignation and wrath:9 Tribulation and anguish upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile;10 But glory, honor, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile;11 For there is no respect of persons with God.12 For as many as have sinned without law, shall also perish without law: and as many as have sinned in the law, shall be judged by the law,13 (For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified.14 For when the Gentiles, who have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these having not the law, are a law to themselves.15 Who show the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing testimony, and their thoughts the mean while accusing, or else excusing one another)16 In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ, according to my gospel.17 Behold, thou art called a Jew, and restest in the law, and makest thy boast of God,18 And knowest his will, and approvest the things that are more excellent, being instructed out of the law,19 And art confident that thou thyself art a guide of the blind, a light of them who are in darkness,20 An instructor of the foolish, a teacher of babes, who hast the form of knowledge, and of the truth in the law:21 Thou therefore who teachest another, teachest thou not thyself? thou that preachest a man should not steal, dost thou steal?22 Thou that sayest a man should not commit adultery, dost thou commit adultery? thou that abhorrest idols, dost thou commit sacrilege?23 Thou that makest thy boast of the law, through breaking the law dishonorest thou God?24 For the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles, through you, as it is written.25 For circumcision verily profiteth, if thou keepest the law; but if thou art a breaker of the law, thy circumcision is made uncircumcision.26 Therefore, if the uncircumcision keepeth the righteousness of the law, shall not his uncircumcision be counted for circumcision?27 And shall not uncircumcision which is by nature, if it fulfilleth the law, judge thee, who by the letter and circumcision dost transgress the law?28 For he is not a Jew, who is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh:29 But he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not from men, but from God.
