1 And, straightway, early, when they had made, a council, the High-priest, with the Elders, and Scribes, and all the High-council, binding Jesus, led him away, and delivered him up unto Pilate.2 And Pilate questioned himArt, thou, the king of the Jews? And, he, answering him, saithThou, sayest.3 And the High-priests began to accuse him, of many things.4 And, Pilate, again, was questioning him, saying Answerest thou, nothing? See! of how many things, they are accusing thee!5 But, Jesus, no further, answered, anything, so that Pilate began to marvel.6 Now, at feast time, he was wont to release unto them one prisoner, whom they were claiming.7 And there was the so-called Barabbas, with the rebels, bound, even with them who, in the rebellion, had committed, murder.8 And, going up, the multitude began to be claimingaccording as he was wont to do for them.9 But, Pilate, answered them, sayingWill ye, I release unto you, the King of the Jews?10 For he was getting to know that, for envy, had the High-priests delivered him up.11 But, the High-priests, stirred up the multitude, that, rather Barabbas, he should release unto them.12 But, Pilate, again answering, was saying unto themWhat then shall I do with him whom ye call, the King of the Jews?13 And, they, again, cried outCrucify him!14 But, Pilate, was saying unto themWhy! what, evil, hath he done? And, they, vehemently, cried outCrucify him!15 And Pilate, being minded to do what would satisfy, the multitude, released unto them Barabbas, and delivered up Jesus, having scourged him, that he should be crucified.16 And, the soldiers, led him away, inside the court, which is a judgment-hall,and called together the whole band;17 and they array him in purple, and set upon him, when they have plaited it; a crown of thorns,18 and began to be saluting himJoy to thee! King of the Jews!19 and were striking him on the head with a reed, and were spitting at him,and, bowing their knees, were doing him homage.20 And, when they had mocked him, they put off him, the purple, and put on him, his own garments. And they lead him forth, that they may crucify him.21 And they impress a certain passer-by, Simon a Cyrenian, coming from a field, the father of Alexander and Rufus,that he may carry his cross.22 And they bring him unto the Golgotha place, which is, being translated, Skull-place.23 And they would have given him, myrrhed wine,who, however, received it not.24 And they crucify him, and part asunder his garments, casting a lot upon themwho should have anything.25 And it was the third hour, and they crucified him.26 And the inscription of his accusation, had been inscribedTHE KING OF THE JEWS.27 And, with him, they crucify, two robbers, one on his right hand, and one on his left.29 And, the passers-by, were reviling him, shaking their heads, and sayingAha! thou who wast pulling down the shrine, and building one in three days!30 Save thyself,coming down from the cross.31 Likewise, the High-priests also, mocking one to another, with the Scribes, were sayingOthers, he saved, himself, he cannot save!32 The Christ, the King of Israellet him come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe. And, they who had been crucified with him, were casting it in his teeth.33 And, when it was the sixth hour, darkness, came on all the landuntil the ninth hour;34 and, at the ninth hour, Jesus, uttered a cry, with a loud voiceEloi! Eloi! lama sabachthanei? which is, being translatedMy God! My God! to what end, didst thou forsake me?35 And, some of the by-standers, having heard, were sayingSee! Elijah, he calleth!36 And one, running, filled a sponge with vinegar, and, putting it about a reed, was giving him to drink, sayingStay! let us see whether Elijah is coming, to take him down!37 But, Jesus, sending out a loud voice, ceased to breathe.38 And, the veil of the Temple, was rent into two, from top to bottom.39 Now the centurion, who was standing near, out over against him, seeing, that, thus, he ceased to breathe, saidTruly, this man, was Gods son!40 And there were, women also, from afar, looking on,among whom were both Mary the Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the Little and Joses, and Salome;41 who, when he was in Galilee, used to follow him, and minister unto him,and many other women, who had come up with him unto Jerusalem.42 And evening, already, having begun, since it was a preparation, that is, the eve of a Sabbath,43 Joseph of Arimathaea, a noble counsellor, who, also himself, was awaiting the kingdom of God, came; and, venturing, went in unto Pilate, and claimed the body of Jesus.44 But, Pilate, wondered whether, already, he was dead; and, calling near the centurion, questioned himwhether he had, already, died.45 And, getting to know from the centurion, he presented the corpse unto Joseph.46 And, buying a fine Indian cloth, he took him down, and wrapped him about with the cloth, and laid him in a tomb, which had been hewn out of a rock,and rolled near a stone upon the door of the tomb.47 Now, Mary the Magdalene, and Mary the mother of Joses, were viewing how he had been laid.

1 E, logo ao amanhecer, os principais dos sacerdotes, e os anciãos, e os escribas, e todo o Sinédrio tiveram conselho; e, amarrando Jesus, o levaram e entregaram a Pilatos. 2 E Pilatos lhe perguntou: Tu és o Rei dos judeus? E ele, respondendo, disse-lhe: Tu o dizes. 3 E os principais dos sacerdotes o acusavam de muitas coisas, porém ele nada respondia. 4 E Pilatos o interrogou outra vez, dizendo: Nada respondes? Vê quantas coisas testificam contra ti. 5 Mas Jesus nada mais respondeu, de maneira que Pilatos se maravilhava.

6 Ora, no dia da festa costumava soltar-lhes um preso qualquer que eles pedissem. 7 E havia um chamado Barrabás, que, preso com outros amotinadores, tinha num motim cometido uma morte. 8 E a multidão, dando gritos, começou a pedir que fizesse como sempre lhes tinha feito. 9 E Pilatos lhes respondeu, dizendo: Quereis que vos solte o Rei dos judeus? 10 Porque ele bem sabia que, por inveja, os principais dos sacerdotes o tinham entregado. 11 Mas os principais dos sacerdotes incitaram a multidão para que fosse solto antes Barrabás. 12 E Pilatos, respondendo, lhes disse outra vez: Que quereis, pois, que faça daquele a quem chamais Rei dos judeus? 13 E eles tornaram a clamar: Crucifica-o. 14 Mas Pilatos lhes disse: Mas que mal fez? E eles cada vez clamavam mais: Crucifica-o. 15 Então, Pilatos, querendo satisfazer a multidão, soltou-lhes Barrabás, e, açoitado Jesus, o entregou para que fosse crucificado.

16 E os soldados o levaram para dentro do palácio, à sala da audiência, e convocaram toda a coorte. 17 E vestiram-no de púrpura e, tecendo uma coroa de espinhos, lha puseram na cabeça. 18 E começaram a saudá-lo, dizendo: Salve, Rei dos judeus! 19 E feriram-no na cabeça com uma cana, e cuspiram nele, e, postos de joelhos, o adoravam. 20 E, havendo-o escarnecido, despiram-lhe a púrpura, e o vestiram com as suas próprias vestes, e o levaram para fora, a fim de o crucificarem.

21 E constrangeram um certo Simão Cireneu, pai de Alexandre e de Rufo, que por ali passava, vindo do campo, a que levasse a cruz.

22 E levaram-no ao lugar do Gólgota, que se traduz por lugar da Caveira. 23 E deram-lhe a beber vinho com mirra, mas ele não o tomou. 24 E, havendo-o crucificado, repartiram as suas vestes, lançando sobre eles sortes, para saber o que cada um levaria. 25 E era a hora terceira, e o crucificaram. 26 E, por cima dele, estava escrita a sua acusação: O Rei dos Judeus. 27 E crucificaram com ele dois salteadores, um à sua direita, e outro à esquerda. 28 E cumpriu-se a Escritura que diz: E com os malfeitores foi contado. 29 E os que passavam blasfemavam dele, meneando a cabeça e dizendo: Ah! Tu que derribas o templo e, em três dias, o edificas! 30 Salva-te a ti mesmo e desce da cruz. 31 E da mesma maneira também os principais dos sacerdotes, com os escribas, diziam uns para os outros, zombando: Salvou os outros e não pode salvar-se a si mesmo. 32 O Cristo, o Rei de Israel, desça agora da cruz, para que o vejamos e acreditemos.

Também os que com ele foram crucificados o injuriavam.

33 E, chegada a hora sexta, houve trevas sobre toda a terra até à hora nona. 34 E, à hora nona, Jesus exclamou com grande voz, dizendo: Eloí, Eloí, lemá sabactâni? Isso, traduzido, é: Deus meu, Deus meu, por que me desamparaste? 35 E alguns dos que ali estavam, ouvindo isso, diziam: Eis que chama por Elias. 36 E um deles correu a embeber uma esponja em vinagre e, pondo-a numa cana, deu-lho a beber, dizendo: Deixai, vejamos se virá Elias tirá-lo. 37 E Jesus, dando um grande brado, expirou. 38 E o véu do templo se rasgou em dois, de alto a baixo. 39 E o centurião que estava defronte dele, vendo que assim clamando expirara, disse: Verdadeiramente, este homem era o Filho de Deus.

40 E também ali estavam algumas mulheres, olhando de longe, entre as quais também Maria Madalena, e Maria, mãe de Tiago, o menor, e de José, e Salomé, 41 as quais também o seguiam e o serviam, quando estava na Galileia; e muitas outras que tinham subido com ele a Jerusalém.

42 E, chegada a tarde, porquanto era o Dia da Preparação, isto é, a véspera do sábado, 43 chegou José de Arimateia, senador honrado, que também esperava o Reino de Deus, e ousadamente foi a Pilatos, e pediu o corpo de Jesus. 44 E Pilatos se admirou de que já estivesse morto. E, chamando o centurião, perguntou-lhe se já havia muito que tinha morrido. 45 E, tendo-se certificado pelo centurião, deu o corpo a José, 46 o qual comprara um lençol fino, e, tirando-o da cruz, o envolveu nele, e o depositou num sepulcro lavrado numa rocha, e revolveu uma pedra para a porta do sepulcro. 47 E Maria Madalena e Maria, mãe de José, observavam onde o punham.
