1 Righteous art thou, O LORD, when I complain to thee; yet I would plead my case before thee. Why does the way of the wicked prosper? Why do all who are treacherous thrive?2 Thou plantest them, and they take root; they grow and bring forth fruit; thou art near in their mouth and far from their heart.3 But thou, O LORD, knowest me; thou seest me, and triest my mind toward thee. Pull them out like sheep for the slaughter, and set them apart for the day of slaughter.4 How long will the land mourn, and the grass of every field wither? For the wickedness of those who dwell in it the beasts and the birds are swept away, because men said, "He will not see our latter end."5 "If you have raced with men on foot, and they have wearied you, how will you compete with horses? And if in a safe land you fall down, how will you do in the jungle of the Jordan?6 For even your brothers and the house of your father, even they have dealt treacherously with you; they are in full cry after you; believe them not, though they speak fair words to you."7 "I have forsaken my house, I have abandoned my heritage; I have given the beloved of my soul into the hands of her enemies.8 My heritage has become to me like a lion in the forest, she has lifted up her voice against me; therefore I hate her.9 Is my heritage to me like a speckled bird of prey? Are the birds of prey against her round about? Go, assemble all the wild beasts; bring them to devour.10 Many shepherds have destroyed my vineyard, they have trampled down my portion, they have made my pleasant portion a desolate wilderness.11 They have made it a desolation; desolate, it mourns to me. The whole land is made desolate, but no man lays it to heart.12 Upon all the bare heights in the desert destroyers have come; for the sword of the LORD devours from one end of the land to the other; no flesh has peace.13 They have sown wheat and have reaped thorns, they have tired themselves out but profit nothing. They shall be ashamed of their harvests because of the fierce anger of the LORD."14 Thus says the LORD concerning all my evil neighbors who touch the heritage which I have given my people Israel to inherit: "Behold, I will pluck them up from their land, and I will pluck up the house of Judah from among them.15 And after I have plucked them up, I will again have compassion on them, and I will bring them again each to his heritage and each to his land.16 And it shall come to pass, if they will diligently learn the ways of my people, to swear by my name, `As the LORD lives,' even as they taught my people to swear by Ba'al, then they shall be built up in the midst of my people.17 But if any nation will not listen, then I will utterly pluck it up and destroy it, says the LORD."

1 — Ó Senhor Deus, se eu discutisse esse meu caso contigo, tu provarias que estás com a razão. Mas eu preciso te fazer algumas perguntas sobre a tua justiça. Por que os maus ficam ricos? Por que os desonestos conseguem sucesso? 2 Tu os plantas, e as suas raízes se firmam; eles crescem e produzem fruto. Vivem sempre falando bem de ti, mas na verdade não se importam contigo. 3 Mas tu, ó Senhor, me conheces; tu vês o que estou fazendo e sabes como te amo. Ó Senhor, arrasta essa gente como ovelhas para o matadouro; separa-os para o dia da matança. 4 Por quanto tempo a nossa terra ficará seca? Até quando o capim murchará em todos os pastos? Os animais e as aves estão morrendo por causa da maldade dos moradores da terra, que dizem: "Deus não vê o que estamos fazendo."

5 Deus respondeu:

— Jeremias, se você se cansa apostando corrida com os homens, como é que vai correr mais do que os cavalos? Se você não se sente seguro numa terra de paz, como é que vai conseguir viver nas matas do rio Jordão? 6 Até os seus irmãos, gente da sua própria família, são traidores. Todos eles criticam você pelas costas. Não confie neles, ainda que venham com conversa de amigo.

7 O Senhor disse:

"Abandonei o meu povo

e rejeitei a nação que escolhi.

Entreguei o povo que eu amo

na mão dos seus inimigos.

8 O meu povo escolhido virou contra mim

como um leão na floresta.

Eles gritaram contra mim,

e por isso eu os detesto.

9 O meu povo escolhido é como um pássaro

atacado de todos os lados por gaviões.

Venham, animais selvagens,

venham tomar parte na festa!

10 Muitos governadores estrangeiros destruíram a minha plantação de uvas,

pisaram os meus campos

e fizeram da minha linda terra um deserto.

11 Arrasaram a terra,

e ela está abandonada diante de mim.

A terra toda virou um deserto,

mas ninguém se importa.

12 Em todos os morros do deserto,

apareceram homens para assaltar os outros.

Eu mandei a guerra para destruir o país inteiro;

ninguém pode viver em paz.

13 O meu povo plantou trigo e colheu espinhos;

trabalhou muito, porém não ganhou nada.

Por causa do fogo da minha ira,

as suas colheitas fracassaram."

14 O Senhor Deus disse:

— Agora, vou falar sobre os vizinhos maus de Israel que arruinaram a terra que eu dei ao meu povo. Levarei essa gente para longe das suas terras, como se fossem plantas arrancadas. E tirarei o povo de Judá do meio deles. 15 Mas, depois de levá-los para longe, terei pena deles e trarei cada nação de volta para a sua terra, para o seu país. 16 Eu quero que eles aceitem de todo o coração a religião do meu povo. Quero que aprendam a dizer: "Juro pelo Senhor, o Deus vivo" — assim como no passado eles ensinaram o meu povo a jurar pelo deus Baal. Se fizerem isso, eles também farão parte do meu povo e terão sucesso. 17 Mas eu arrancarei pelas raízes e destruirei completamente qualquer nação que não quiser obedecer. Eu, o Senhor, falei.
