1 In the beginning of the reign of Jehoi'akim the son of Josi'ah, king of Judah, this word came from the LORD,2 "Thus says the LORD: Stand in the court of the LORD's house, and speak to all the cities of Judah which come to worship in the house of the LORD all the words that I command you to speak to them; do not hold back a word.3 It may be they will listen, and every one turn from his evil way, that I may repent of the evil which I intend to do to them because of their evil doings.4 You shall say to them, `Thus says the LORD: If you will not listen to me, to walk in my law which I have set before you,5 and to heed the words of my servants the prophets whom I send to you urgently, though you have not heeded,6 then I will make this house like Shiloh, and I will make this city a curse for all the nations of the earth.'"7 The priests and the prophets and all the people heard Jeremiah speaking these words in the house of the LORD.8 And when Jeremiah had finished speaking all that the LORD had commanded him to speak to all the people, then the priests and the prophets and all the people laid hold of him, saying, "You shall die!9 Why have you prophesied in the name of the LORD, saying, `This house shall be like Shiloh, and this city shall be desolate, without inhabitant'?" And all the people gathered about Jeremiah in the house of the LORD.10 When the princes of Judah heard these things, they came up from the king's house to the house of the LORD and took their seat in the entry of the New Gate of the house of the LORD.11 Then the priests and the prophets said to the princes and to all the people, "This man deserves the sentence of death, because he has prophesied against this city, as you have heard with your own ears."12 Then Jeremiah spoke to all the princes and all the people, saying, "The LORD sent me to prophesy against this house and this city all the words you have heard.13 Now therefore amend your ways and your doings, and obey the voice of the LORD your God, and the LORD will repent of the evil which he has pronounced against you.14 But as for me, behold, I am in your hands. Do with me as seems good and right to you.15 Only know for certain that if you put me to death, you will bring innocent blood upon yourselves and upon this city and its inhabitants, for in truth the LORD sent me to you to speak all these words in your ears."16 Then the princes and all the people said to the priests and the prophets, "This man does not deserve the sentence of death, for he has spoken to us in the name of the LORD our God."17 And certain of the elders of the land arose and spoke to all the assembled people, saying,18 "Micah of Mo'resheth prophesied in the days of Hezeki'ah king of Judah, and said to all the people of Judah: `Thus says the LORD of hosts, Zion shall be plowed as a field; Jerusalem shall become a heap of ruins, and the mountain of the house a wooded height.'19 Did Hezeki'ah king of Judah and all Judah put him to death? Did he not fear the LORD and entreat the favor of the LORD, and did not the LORD repent of the evil which he had pronounced against them? But we are about to bring great evil upon ourselves."20 There was another man who prophesied in the name of the LORD, Uri'ah the son of Shemai'ah from Kir'iath-je'arim. He prophesied against this city and against this land in words like those of Jeremiah.21 And when King Jehoi'akim, with all his warriors and all the princes, heard his words, the king sought to put him to death; but when Uri'ah heard of it, he was afraid and fled and escaped to Egypt.22 Then King Jehoi'akim sent to Egypt certain men, Elna'than the son of Achbor and others with him,23 and they fetched Uri'ah from Egypt and brought him to King Jehoi'akim, who slew him with the sword and cast his dead body into the burial place of the common people.24 But the hand of Ahi'kam the son of Shaphan was with Jeremiah so that he was not given over to the people to be put to death.

1 Logo que Jeoaquim, filho de Josias, se tornou rei de Judá, 2 o Senhor Deus me disse:

— Fique no pátio do Templo e diga tudo o que mandei você dizer ao povo que vem das cidades de Judá para adorar no Templo. Não deixe de dizer nada do que eu mandei. 3 Pode ser que eles deem atenção e abandonem os seus maus caminhos. Se isso acontecer, então eu mudarei de ideia a respeito da desgraça que estou planejando fazer cair sobre eles por causa das suas más ações.

4 Deus me mandou dizer ao povo o seguinte:

— Eu, o Senhor, disse que vocês devem me obedecer e seguir o ensino que lhes dei. 5 Escutem o que os meus servos, os profetas, dizem. Eu sempre os tenho enviado, mas vocês não têm obedecido às suas palavras. 6 Se vocês não escutarem, eu farei com este Templo o mesmo que fiz com Siló ; e todas as nações do mundo usarão o nome dessa cidade para rogar pragas.

7 Os sacerdotes, os profetas e todo o povo me ouviram dizer essas coisas no pátio do Templo. 8 Logo que acabei de falar tudo o que o Senhor tinha mandado, os sacerdotes, os profetas e o povo me agarraram e gritaram:

— Você vai morrer por causa disso! 9 Por que é que você disse, em nome de Deus, o Senhor, que este Templo ficará como Siló, que esta cidade será destruída e que ninguém viverá nela?

Então o povo se ajuntou em volta de mim no pátio do Templo.

10 Quando as autoridades de Judá souberam disso, saíram do palácio do rei e foram se assentar nos seus lugares, na entrada do Portão Novo do Templo. 11 Então os sacerdotes e os profetas disseram às autoridades e ao povo:

— Este homem merece ser condenado à morte, pois falou contra a nossa cidade. Vocês mesmos o ouviram.

12 Aí eu disse:

— Foi o Senhor Deus quem me mandou falar tudo o que vocês me ouviram dizer contra este Templo e contra esta cidade. 13 Vocês precisam mudar a sua maneira de viver e de agir e precisam obedecer às palavras do Senhor. Se vocês fizerem isso, então ele mudará de ideia e não mandará a desgraça que prometeu mandar. 14 Quanto a mim, estou nas mãos de vocês. Façam comigo o que acharem direito e justo. 15 Mas fiquem certos de uma coisa: se me matarem, vocês e o povo desta cidade serão culpados da morte de um homem inocente, pois foi Deus quem me mandou dizer todas essas coisas a vocês.

16 Então as autoridades e o povo disseram aos sacerdotes e aos profetas:

— Este homem não deve ser condenado à morte, pois nos falou em nome do Senhor, nosso Deus.

17 Aí alguns dos líderes mais velhos se levantaram e disseram ao povo que se havia ajuntado:

18 — Quando Ezequias era rei de Judá, o profeta Miqueias, de Moresete, deu a todo o povo uma mensagem do Senhor Todo-Poderoso. A mensagem era esta:

"Jerusalém vai virar um montão de pedras,

o monte Sião vai ser arado como um campo,

e o lugar onde fica o Templo se tornará uma floresta."

19 E os líderes continuaram:

— Por acaso, o rei Ezequias e o povo de Judá mataram Miqueias? Muito pelo contrário! Ezequias temeu o Senhor e procurou ganhar o seu favor. O Senhor mudou de ideia e não mandou a desgraça que tinha dito que ia fazer cair sobre eles. Será que agora nós vamos fazer cair uma terrível desgraça sobre nós mesmos?

20 — Também houve outro homem que falou em nome de Deus, o Senhor. Foi Urias, filho de Semaías, da cidade de Quiriate-Jearim. Ele falou contra esta cidade e contra esta nação, da mesma forma que Jeremias fez. 21 Quando o rei Jeoaquim, e os seus soldados, e os seus oficiais souberam do que Urias tinha dito, o rei mandou que o matassem. Mas Urias, sabendo disso, ficou com medo e fugiu para o Egito. 22 Porém o rei Jeoaquim mandou Elnatã, filho de Acbor, e alguns outros homens ao Egito para pegarem Urias. 23 Eles trouxeram Urias do Egito e o entregaram a Jeoaquim, e ele o mandou matar e jogar o corpo no cemitério público.

24 Eu só não fui entregue ao povo para ser morto porque Aicã, filho de Safã, me protegeu.
