1 And the LORD said to Moses, "See, I make you as God to Pharaoh; and Aaron your brother shall be your prophet.2 You shall speak all that I command you; and Aaron your brother shall tell Pharaoh to let the people of Israel go out of his land.3 But I will harden Pharaoh's heart, and though I multiply my signs and wonders in the land of Egypt,4 Pharaoh will not listen to you; then I will lay my hand upon Egypt and bring forth my hosts, my people the sons of Israel, out of the land of Egypt by great acts of judgment.5 And the Egyptians shall know that I am the LORD, when I stretch forth my hand upon Egypt and bring out the people of Israel from among them."6 And Moses and Aaron did so; they did as the LORD commanded them.7 Now Moses was eighty years old, and Aaron eighty- three years old, when they spoke to Pharaoh.8 And the LORD said to Moses and Aaron,9 "When Pharaoh says to you, `Prove yourselves by working a miracle,' then you shall say to Aaron, `Take your rod and cast it down before Pharaoh, that it may become a serpent.'"10 So Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and did as the LORD commanded; Aaron cast down his rod before Pharaoh and his servants, and it became a serpent.11 Then Pharaoh summoned the wise men and the sorcerers; and they also, the magicians of Egypt, did the same by their secret arts.12 For every man cast down his rod, and they became serpents. But Aaron's rod swallowed up their rods.13 Still Pharaoh's heart was hardened, and he would not listen to them; as the LORD had said.14 Then the LORD said to Moses, "Pharaoh's heart is hardened, he refuses to let the people go.15 Go to Pharaoh in the morning, as he is going out to the water; wait for him by the river's brink, and take in your hand the rod which was turned into a serpent.16 And you shall say to him, `The LORD, the God of the Hebrews, sent me to you, saying, "Let my people go, that they may serve me in the wilderness; and behold, you have not yet obeyed."17 Thus says the LORD, "By this you shall know that I am the LORD: behold, I will strike the water that is in the Nile with the rod that is in my hand, and it shall be turned to blood,18 and the fish in the Nile shall die, and the Nile shall become foul, and the Egyptians will loathe to drink water from the Nile."'"19 And the LORD said to Moses, "Say to Aaron, `Take your rod and stretch out your hand over the waters of Egypt, over their rivers, their canals, and their ponds, and all their pools of water, that they may become blood; and there shall be blood throughout all the land of Egypt, both in vessels of wood and in vessels of stone.'"20 Moses and Aaron did as the LORD commanded; in the sight of Pharaoh and in the sight of his servants, he lifted up the rod and struck the water that was in the Nile, and all the water that was in the Nile turned to blood.21 And the fish in the Nile died; and the Nile became foul, so that the Egyptians could not drink water from the Nile; and there was blood throughout all the land of Egypt.22 But the magicians of Egypt did the same by their secret arts; so Pharaoh's heart remained hardened, and he would not listen to them; as the LORD had said.23 Pharaoh turned and went into his house, and he did not lay even this to heart.24 And all the Egyptians dug round about the Nile for water to drink, for they could not drink the water of the Nile.25 Seven days passed after the LORD had struck the Nile.

1 Então o Senhor Deus disse a Moisés:

— Vou fazer com que você seja como Deus para o rei; e Arão, o seu irmão, falará por você como profeta. 2 Você dirá a Arão tudo o que eu mandar, e ele falará com o rei, pedindo que deixe os israelitas saírem da terra dele. 3 Mas eu vou fazer com que o rei fique teimoso e farei muitos milagres e coisas espantosas no Egito. 4 O rei não vai ouvir vocês. Porém eu farei com que caia sobre ele um castigo terrível e levarei para fora do Egito os meus exércitos, isto é, o povo de Israel. 5 Quando eu levantar a mão contra os egípcios e tirar do meio deles os israelitas, os egípcios ficarão sabendo que eu sou o Senhor.

6 Moisés e Arão fizeram tudo como o Senhor havia mandado. 7 Quando falaram com o rei do Egito, Moisés tinha oitenta anos, e Arão, oitenta e três.

8 O Senhor Deus disse a Moisés e a Arão:

9 — Se o rei do Egito mandar que vocês façam um milagre, você, Moisés, dirá a Arão que pegue o bastão e o jogue no chão na frente do rei. O bastão virará uma cobra.

10 Aí Moisés e Arão foram se encontrar com o rei e fizeram como o Senhor havia mandado. Arão jogou o bastão diante do rei e dos seus funcionários, e o bastão virou uma cobra. 11 Então o rei mandou vir os sábios e os mágicos, e com a sua mágica eles fizeram a mesma coisa. 12 Cada um deles jogou a sua vara de mágico no chão, e elas viraram cobras. Porém o bastão de Arão engoliu as varas de mágico deles. 13 No entanto, como o Senhor tinha dito, o rei continuou teimando e não atendeu o pedido de Moisés e Arão.

14 Então o Senhor Deus disse a Moisés:

— O rei está teimando e não quer deixar o povo sair do Egito. 15 Vá procurá-lo amanhã cedo, quando ele for até o rio Nilo. Pegue o bastão que virou cobra e espere o rei na beira do rio. 16 E diga-lhe o seguinte: "O Senhor, o Deus dos hebreus, me mandou dizer-lhe que deixasse o povo dele ir embora para adorá-lo no deserto. Porém até agora o senhor não obedeceu à ordem de Deus. 17 Portanto, Deus lhe diz que, por causa daquilo que ele vai fazer agora, o senhor vai saber que ele é Deus, o Senhor. Ó rei, agora eu vou bater na água do rio com este bastão que estou segurando, e a água vai virar sangue. 18 Os peixes que estão no rio vão morrer, e o rio vai cheirar tão mal, que os egípcios terão nojo de beber água dele."

19 E o Senhor disse também a Moisés:

— Diga a Arão que pegue o bastão e estenda a mão sobre os rios, os canais, os poços e os reservatórios, para que as suas águas virem sangue. Assim, haverá sangue até nas tigelas de madeira e nas jarras de pedra.

20 Moisés e Arão fizeram como o Senhor havia mandado. Na frente do rei e dos seus funcionários, Arão levantou o bastão e bateu no rio, e a água virou sangue. 21 Os peixes morreram, e o rio cheirou tão mal, que os egípcios não podiam beber água dele. E em todo o Egito houve sangue. 22 Porém, com as suas artes, os mágicos do Egito fizeram a mesma coisa. E assim o rei continuou teimando. Como o Senhor tinha dito, ele não atendeu o pedido de Moisés e Arão. 23 Pelo contrário, ele voltou para o seu palácio, sem se preocupar com o que havia acontecido. 24 Todos os egípcios cavaram buracos na beira do rio para beber água limpa, pois não podiam beber da água do rio.

25 E passaram sete dias, depois que o Senhor Deus bateu nas águas do rio.
