1 Afterward Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said, "Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, `Let my people go, that they may hold a feast to me in the wilderness.'"2 But Pharaoh said, "Who is the LORD, that I should heed his voice and let Israel go? I do not know the LORD, and moreover I will not let Israel go."3 Then they said, "The God of the Hebrews has met with us; let us go, we pray, a three days' journey into the wilderness, and sacrifice to the LORD our God, lest he fall upon us with pestilence or with the sword."4 But the king of Egypt said to them, "Moses and Aaron, why do you take the people away from their work? Get to your burdens."5 And Pharaoh said, "Behold, the people of the land are now many and you make them rest from their burdens!"6 The same day Pharaoh commanded the taskmasters of the people and their foremen,7 "You shall no longer give the people straw to make bricks, as heretofore; let them go and gather straw for themselves.8 But the number of bricks which they made heretofore you shall lay upon them, you shall by no means lessen it; for they are idle; therefore they cry, `Let us go and offer sacrifice to our God.'9 Let heavier work be laid upon the men that they may labor at it and pay no regard to lying words."10 So the taskmasters and the foremen of the people went out and said to the people, "Thus says Pharaoh, `I will not give you straw.11 Go yourselves, get your straw wherever you can find it; but your work will not be lessened in the least.'"12 So the people were scattered abroad throughout all the land of Egypt, to gather stubble for straw.13 The taskmasters were urgent, saying, "Complete your work, your daily task, as when there was straw."14 And the foremen of the people of Israel, whom Pharaoh's taskmasters had set over them, were beaten, and were asked, "Why have you not done all your task of making bricks today, as hitherto?"15 Then the foremen of the people of Israel came and cried to Pharaoh, "Why do you deal thus with your servants?16 No straw is given to your servants, yet they say to us, `Make bricks!' And behold, your servants are beaten; but the fault is in your own people."17 But he said, "You are idle, you are idle; therefore you say, `Let us go and sacrifice to the LORD.'18 Go now, and work; for no straw shall be given you, yet you shall deliver the same number of bricks."19 The foremen of the people of Israel saw that they were in evil plight, when they said, "You shall by no means lessen your daily number of bricks."20 They met Moses and Aaron, who were waiting for them, as they came forth from Pharaoh;21 and they said to them, "The LORD look upon you and judge, because you have made us offensive in the sight of Pharaoh and his servants, and have put a sword in their hand to kill us."22 Then Moses turned again to the LORD and said, "O LORD, why hast thou done evil to this people? Why didst thou ever send me?23 For since I came to Pharaoh to speak in thy name, he has done evil to this people, and thou hast not delivered thy people at all."

1 Depois Moisés e Arão foram falar com o rei do Egito e disseram:

— O Senhor, o Deus do povo de Israel, disse: "Deixe que o meu povo vá ao deserto a fim de fazer ali uma festa em minha honra."

2 — Quem é o Senhor? — perguntou o rei. — Por que devo ouvi-lo e deixar que o povo de Israel vá ao deserto? Eu não conheço o Senhor e não vou deixar que os israelitas saiam daqui.

3 Moisés e Arão responderam:

— O Deus dos hebreus veio falar conosco. Por isso deixe-nos viajar três dias pelo deserto a fim de oferecermos sacrifícios ao Senhor, nosso Deus. Se não formos, ele nos matará com doenças e na guerra.

4 Aí o rei do Egito disse a Moisés e a Arão:

— Por que vocês estão atrapalhando o trabalho do povo? Façam com que aqueles escravos voltem ao trabalho!

5 Ele disse também:

— Agora que há tantos israelitas no país, vocês querem que eles deixem de trabalhar?

6 Naquele mesmo dia o rei deu aos feitores e aos chefes de turmas a seguinte ordem:

7 — Daqui em diante vocês não vão mais dar palha ao povo, para fazer tijolos. Que eles mesmos ajuntem a palha. 8 Mas vocês exijam que eles façam a mesma quantidade de tijolos, nem um tijolo a menos. São uns preguiçosos e é por isso que gritam: "Vamos oferecer sacrifícios ao nosso Deus!" 9 Façam essa gente trabalhar mais duro ainda e os mantenham ocupados, a fim de que não tenham tempo de ouvir mentiras.

10 Então os feitores e os chefes de turmas saíram e foram dizer ao povo o seguinte:

— O rei disse que não vai mais fornecer palha a vocês. 11 Ele manda que vocês vão ajuntar palha onde puderem achar. Mas terão de continuar fazendo a mesma quantidade de tijolos.

12 Por isso o povo se espalhou por toda a terra do Egito, ajuntando a palha que sobrava das colheitas. 13 Os feitores forçavam os israelitas a fazer todos os dias a mesma quantidade de tijolos que costumavam fazer quando recebiam palha. 14 Os feitores batiam nos israelitas chefes de turmas que haviam sido encarregados do trabalho e perguntavam:

— Por que vocês não estão fazendo a mesma quantidade de tijolos que faziam antes?

15 Então os israelitas chefes de turmas foram se queixar ao rei. Eles disseram:

— Por que é que o senhor nos trata assim, nós que somos seus empregados? 16 Agora não nos dão mais palha, mas exigem que continuemos fazendo tijolos! Além disso batem em nós; no entanto, os seus feitores é que são os culpados.

17 Mas o rei respondeu:

— Vocês são uns preguiçosos e não querem trabalhar. É por isso que estão me pedindo que os deixe ir oferecer sacrifícios a Deus, o Senhor. 18 Voltem ao trabalho. Vocês não receberão palha, mas terão de fazer a mesma quantidade de tijolos.

19 Os israelitas chefes de turmas viram que estavam numa situação difícil, quando lhes foi dito que fizessem todos os dias a mesma quantidade de tijolos que faziam antes. 20 Depois de falarem com o rei, eles se encontraram com Moisés e Arão, que os estavam esperando, 21 e lhes disseram:

— O Senhor Deus está vendo o que vocês estão fazendo e os castigará; pois, por causa de vocês, o rei e os seus funcionários estão com ódio de nós. Vocês deram a eles um motivo para nos matarem!

22 Moisés falou outra vez com Deus, o Senhor. Ele disse:

— Ó Senhor, por que tratas tão mal este povo? Por que me mandaste para cá? 23 Pois, desde que vim falar em teu nome com o rei do Egito, ele tem maltratado este povo. E tu não fizeste nada para ajudá-los.
