1 In the ninth year of Zedeki'ah king of Judah, in the tenth month, Nebuchadrez'zar king of Babylon and all his army came against Jerusalem and besieged it;2 in the eleventh year of Zedeki'ah, in the fourth month, on the ninth day of the month, a breach was made in the city.3 When Jerusalem was taken, all the princes of the king of Babylon came and sat in the middle gate: Ner'gal-share'zer, Sam'gar-ne'bo, Sar'sechim the Rab'saris, Ner'gal-share'zer the Rabmag, with all the rest of the officers of the king of Babylon.4 When Zedeki'ah king of Judah and all the soldiers saw them, they fled, going out of the city at night by way of the king's garden through the gate between the two walls; and they went toward the Arabah.5 But the army of the Chalde'ans pursued them, and overtook Zedeki'ah in the plains of Jericho; and when they had taken him, they brought him up to Nebuchadrez'zar king of Babylon, at Riblah, in the land of Hamath; and he passed sentence upon him.6 The king of Babylon slew the sons of Zedeki'ah at Riblah before his eyes; and the king of Babylon slew all the nobles of Judah.7 He put out the eyes of Zedeki'ah, and bound him in fetters to take him to Babylon.8 The Chalde'ans burned the king's house and the house of the people, and broke down the walls of Jerusalem.9 Then Nebu'zarad'an, the captain of the guard, carried into exile to Babylon the rest of the people who were left in the city, those who had deserted to him, and the people who remained.10 Nebu'zarad'an, the captain of the guard, left in the land of Judah some of the poor people who owned nothing, and gave them vineyards and fields at the same time.11 Nebuchadrez'zar king of Babylon gave command concerning Jeremiah through Nebu'zarad'an, the captain of the guard, saying,12 "Take him, look after him well and do him no harm, but deal with him as he tells you."13 So Nebu'zarad'an the captain of the guard, Nebushaz'ban the Rab'saris, Ner'gal-share'zer the Rabmag, and all the chief officers of the king of Babylon14 sent and took Jeremiah from the court of the guard. They entrusted him to Gedali'ah the son of Ahi'kam, son of Shaphan, that he should take him home. So he dwelt among the people.15 The word of the LORD came to Jeremiah while he was shut up in the court of the guard:16 "Go, and say to E'bed-mel'ech the Ethiopian, `Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I will fulfil my words against this city for evil and not for good, and they shall be accomplished before you on that day.17 But I will deliver you on that day, says the LORD, and you shall not be given into the hand of the men of whom you are afraid.18 For I will surely save you, and you shall not fall by the sword; but you shall have your life as a prize of war, because you have put your trust in me, says the LORD.'"

1 No décimo mês do ano nono do reinado de Zedequias em Judá, o rei Nabucodonosor, da Babilônia, veio com todo o seu exército e atacou a cidade de Jerusalém. 2 No ano décimo primeiro do reinado de Zedequias, no dia nove do quarto mês, eles conseguiram abrir uma brecha na muralha da cidade.

3 Quando Jerusalém foi tomada , todos os altos funcionários do rei da Babilônia vieram e sentaram nos seus lugares, no Portão do Meio. Entre eles, estavam Nergal-Sarezer, Sangar-Nebo, Sarsequim e outro Nergal-Sarezer.

4 Quando o rei Zedequias e todos os seus soldados viram o que havia acontecido, tentaram fugir da cidade durante a noite. Eles saíram pelo caminho do jardim do rei, foram pelo portão que ligava as duas muralhas e fugiram na direção do vale do Jordão. 5 Mas o exército dos babilônios os perseguiu e prendeu Zedequias na planície de Jericó. Eles o levaram como prisioneiro ao rei Nabucodonosor, que estava na cidade de Ribla, na região de Hamate. Ali Nabucodonosor o condenou. 6 Em Ribla, o rei da Babilônia mandou matar os filhos de Zedequias na presença do pai. Também mandou matar as autoridades de Judá. 7 Depois, mandou furar os olhos de Zedequias e o prendeu com correntes de bronze a fim de levá-lo para a Babilônia. 8 Enquanto isso, os babilônios incendiaram o palácio real e as casas do povo e derrubaram as muralhas de Jerusalém. 9 E Nebuzaradã, o comandante-geral do exército babilônio, levou como prisioneiros para a Babilônia os que haviam sido deixados na cidade e os que haviam fugido para o lado dele. 10 Mas deixou ficar na terra de Judá algumas pessoas mais pobres, que não tinham propriedades, e lhes deu plantações de uvas e terras.

11 E Nabucodonosor, rei da Babilônia, deu a Nebuzaradã a seguinte ordem a meu respeito:

12 — Vá buscar Jeremias e cuide bem dele. Não o trate mal, mas faça por ele o que ele quiser.

13 Assim Nebuzaradã, junto com Nebusazbã, alto oficial, e Nergal-Sarezer, que também era alto oficial, e todas as outras autoridades do rei da Babilônia 14 mandaram me tirar do pátio da guarda. Fui entregue a Gedalias, filho de Aicã e neto de Safã, e ele me levou para casa. Assim eu fiquei em Jerusalém, no meio do povo.

15 Enquanto eu ainda estava preso no pátio da guarda, o Senhor Deus falou comigo. Ele me mandou 16 que dissesse a Ebede-Meleque, da Etiópia, que o Senhor Todo-Poderoso, o Deus de Israel, tinha dito o seguinte:

— Conforme prometi, não trarei progresso e sim destruição a esta cidade de Jerusalém. E, quando isso acontecer, você estará aqui para ver. 17 Mas eu, o Senhor, o protegerei, e você não será entregue nas mãos daqueles de quem está com medo. 18 Eu o salvarei: você não morrerá. Você continuará vivo porque confiou em mim. Eu, o Senhor, falei.
