1 The word of the LORD that came to Jeremiah the prophet concerning the Philistines, before Pharaoh smote Gaza.2 "Thus says the LORD: Behold, waters are rising out of the north, and shall become an overflowing torrent; they shall overflow the land and all that fills it, the city and those who dwell in it. Men shall cry out, and every inhabitant of the land shall wail.3 At the noise of the stamping of the hoofs of his stallions, at the rushing of his chariots, at the rumbling of their wheels, the fathers look not back to their children, so feeble are their hands,4 because of the day that is coming to destroy all the Philistines, to cut off from Tyre and Sidon every helper that remains. For the LORD is destroying the Philistines, the remnant of the coastland of Caphtor.5 Baldness has come upon Gaza, Ash'kelon has perished. O remnant of the Anakim, how long will you gash yourselves?6 Ah, sword of the LORD! How long till you are quiet? Put yourself into your scabbard, rest and be still!7 How can it be quiet, when the LORD has given it a charge? Against Ash'kelon and against the seashore he has appointed it."

1 Antes de o rei do Egito atacar a cidade de Gaza, o Senhor Deus me falou a respeito dos filisteus.

2 Ele disse: "Vejam!

No Norte, as águas estão subindo

e de lá vão correr como um rio

no tempo da enchente.

Elas cobrirão a terra

e tudo o que nela existe,

as cidades e os seus moradores.

Eles gritarão pedindo socorro;

todos nesta terra gritarão de dor.

3 Eles ouvirão o ruído das patas dos cavalos,

o barulho dos carros de guerra

e o estrondo das suas rodas.

Os pais não voltarão para buscar os seus filhos,

pois os seus braços estarão fracos, caídos.

4 Chegou o dia de destruir o país dos filisteus,

chegou o dia de impedir que as cidades de Tiro e Sidom

recebam ajuda dos seus aliados.

Eu, o Senhor, vou destruir os filisteus,

todos os que vêm da ilha de Creta.

5 O povo de Gaza ficou muito triste,

e os moradores de Asquelom estão calados.

Até quando vão chorar os que ficaram na terra dos filisteus?

6 Vocês gritam: ‘Espada de Deus!

Quando é que você vai parar de matar?

Volte para a sua bainha,

fique ali e descanse!’

7 Mas como é que a espada pode descansar,

se eu lhe dei trabalho para fazer?

Eu mandei que ela atacasse a cidade de Asquelom

e o povo que vive no litoral."
